How do cheesy dj's get gigs?

I was doing some thinking and started wondering. How on earth do dj's that suck ass and play awful music and can't really mix very well become big name dj's. For example, Louie Devito and Dj Irene are absolutely horrendous dj's. Maybe it's just my opinion but I think I would completely blow them out of the water and make them look like fools if we ever did Vs. show and I'm sure that many or at least some of the dj's on this very message board would also blow them away. So how it that these clowns are famous? I'm not complaining that I'm not famous or anything of the sort because I'm still very young but it boggles my mind that these idiots such as that lesbian Irene & that juiced up roid head Louie Devito have the most popular mix cd's out on the market. Is it just because most people like cheese?

sadly, it speaks volumes about american music taste that the first week nyana was released here, it was only 3rd on billboards' dance chart, WAAAAYYYYY behind louis devito.... so shitty...

Nyana was trash but thats besides the point. The reason that all these so called "cheese" djs play music that a lot of people like and have been smart/lucky enough to create an image and name for themselves that makes booking them logical for the clubs.

That's true plus somehow they made a name for themselves that people now recognize, thus they are booked caus' it will bring clubbers.

the reason people like louie devito cds is because people in america don't care about good transitions...the faster you get from one track to the next the better...it could be a straight switch from one deck to the other and american "clubbers" would prefer that over a slower transition where you could not tell where one track started and the other one ended...maybe the gotta have it now mentality...besides most clubbers only like songs with vocals because they can sing along (albeit terribly) and/or something with a catchy riff...aka Zombie Nation/Darude/Alice Deejay

The problem with DJ irene is shes american, and while there are a few notable exceptions, the majority of american DJ's have no fucking idea about how music is meant to be played. I spoke to an american recently who played me DJ Irene CD, which sounded like a bad cheesy house sampler CD, and then told me 'thats how youre supposed to play hard house'... the point being americans like to do everything different to the rest of the world, even if doing it different means doing it fuck ass backwards, and electronic music is no exception.

As to cheesy european DJs... well the get gigs because they get numbers.... cheesy music is generally so called because it appeals to the masses.

The bottom line is its all about who you know... The greatest DJ of all time is probably some bedroom DJ but because he knows nobody, he will never get gigs. While on the other hand, some bloated wuffus who has had his tables for 1 week just happens to know this guy that knows that guy, etc... and he is getting gigs out the anus.

Has it ever occured to you that they get famous through hard work. That you think what they like and produce is cheesy is just your opinion, and probably not a popular opinion either. Think about it.

It may be who they know or image, but I can guarantee they didn't get where they are by sitting on their arse; hard work is always the telling factor. They get my respect simply because they're out there doin' it.

the thing is cheeze is everywhere ...most promoters have no clue and they thing top 40 or cheezy shit will sell more which is false to be honest most listeners are sheep they wille eventuall like osmething thats play often enough... but thats the way all over the world ..europe has just as many cheezzy big names as the americans.. but id have to say majority of djs anywhere are shitty... but americans just have as much quality djs as any other country

I used to play some top40 for $$, and yeah, that's right on the nose. People wanted to hear tracks in full and would get pissed off if you did a mix that lasted longer than 15 seconds.

You're forming your opinion of American DJs on like two notable people who suck. The fact is the majority of DJs who actually _care_ about the music are usually doing a good job. There's also no right way to mix, if there was one simple "right" way the electronic scene would be a fucking snoozer.

Well, it's easier than you think to get gigs in bigger cities and college towns. A truely exceptional DJ would probably catch a break. It's a sad fact that far too many DJs in clubland are just clown who don't know how to use their decks properly. Knowing someone is the easiest way to get places without hard work.

Yeah, top 40 isn't very fun to play. It's more or less just Deck A -> Deck B over ... and over...
