what Year was Trance Born??

what Year was Trance Born?? i always thought trance was born fairly recently around the early 1990's with 'energy 52' being the first tune 2 make it big, but i was having an arguement with a mate who said it's been around since the early 80's calling it 'Trance-Techno', is this even a ture genre?? or is it something else compltely(and obviously we know the difference betwwen hardcore 'n' trance so were not mistaking it 4 that)
