HappyHappy Colorado signs Kariya and Selanne

Story here

What do you all think of this. I think it's a good move, with Roy off the payroll, might as well beef up your offense. Kariya for $1.2 million??!?!?!?! What a steal. Of course he wouldn't take that kind of money from just ANY team. Here's an interesting powerplay: Sakic, Forsberg, Kariya, Selanne and Blake/Hejduk. Scary!!!

Yeah Colorado will be an allstar team in itself next year. Forsberg decided to stay and now Selnne and Kariya.

Thus ruining the NHL.

Gary Betteman might aswell just hold an opening night ceremony and hand over the Stanley Cup right there and then to the Avs.

Who's next for them to pick up? Curtis Joseph anyone? Looking more and more concievable considering Dominik Hasek is probably going to make a return to the Red Wings for another year or two.

But you can see all this coming anyway, I am not in the least bit shocked. I mean, this could be the last year of NHL hockey in awhile, seeming they have to argue back and forth about that damn Collective Bargaining Agreement year after. Teams want to make this THE year in case there won't be any hockey for a year or however long it will last.

Did you see how much of a paycut Paul Kariya took to go play with the Avs? $9,000,000!!! The Players Association must be steaming mad! LOL!!

I just hope the same thing doesn't happen to them as what happened to the Rangers, the worst team money could buy. =)

Yeah...you'd think you could just hand the cup over except for the fact they have NO GOALIE...oh wait..
Ok so now Hasek anounces he's going to return so Detroit will have to dump either Cujo or Hasek...so CO better pick one of these two up...or even Sean Burke or Khabibulin...cuz like the Rangers...you just can't win spending only money...it's a team game...just look at this past year where TEAMS made it deep into the playoffs. (i.e. MN, ANA, OTT,)

I think it would be funny if they got Cujo, or Hasek, and still didn't make it to the finals...with a healthy team.
Course I have 5 Selanne Jersey's in my closet (3 Winnipeg Jets ones)...might as well make it 6 now...cuz I'd like to see him get a cup. Maybe I'll beg Colorado to pick up Teppo from the Yotes so he'll have a shot for the cup too.

*sigh*...my beloved jets ...

The gap that Roy has made by retiring is a huge hole to fill, only a few goalies in the league are up to itm maybe Hasek or Giguere. As a goalie myself I don't rate Cujo at all and would hate to see him in an avs jersey next season. I would love to see Khabibulin in Denver next season as he is an exciting goaltender and has a good few years ahead of him.

Thumbs up

well i was real excited to hear about colorado's aquisitions, being a fan. but roy is big spot to fill, and if they aren't able to aquire a strong goalie, aebicher is what they have left? kariya obviously see's that colorado may be his best chance at getting back to the cup and actually taking it this time. i'm looking forward to the season, it'll be great one hopefully for the avs, and this better not be the last season for a while, i cant stand basketball on TV all the fuckign time.

Any idea what Thomas Steen is up to nowadays?

who needs goaltending when your gonna have the puck for 80% of the time in the oppositions defensive zone, ahaha

Posted by woody87 on Jul-13-2003 10:58:

Every team needs goaltending, I know this for a fact as a goaltender myself. I played for the best team in my country last season and we were the most offensive team and scored the most goals we scored over 50 goals in the national finals and we nearly lost the tournament because the defense was too offensive minded.

A solid defense and good goaltending is what is going to win Stanley cups as no goals against means you cant lose!

Posted by w00h00 on Jul-13-2003 21:55:

yeah.. defense wins championships. By all mean the finals should have been Ottawa vs either Detroit or Dallas, but in both conferences it was the superior defensive team that made it, and finally in the end the superior defensive team that won it all.

As for the subject at hand.. Kariya and Selanne on the same line... I was talking to my buddy (huge hockey nut also) and his opening comment on the subject was "have you ever heard of a 50% power play? I haven't, but we may see it this year." That might be a little overambitious, but maybe not. This announcement was obviously the biggest of the summer so far, but the Hasek one is pretty friggin' huge also. Detroit vs. Colorado vonference finals, anyone? Obviously the real question lies in how they're utilized.. personally I think I would see them as second line. Forsberg, Tanguay and Hejduk on first line (hejduk did get most goals last season, right? 49?) and then kariya and selanne 2nd line. Let's be honest, you can put any other forward between them. It's like Naslund and Bertuzzi. Yeah Morrison is a good centerman, but you could put any centerman with half a brain between them and they'd still rake in goals like nothing. All I gotta' say is.. I hate the avs, but they should be one hell of an exciting team to watch this year, and provided they get a good goalie, a toss in for at LEAST conference finals. But then.. anything can happen in the playoffs (anaheim in the finals.. MN in the conference finals, tampa making it to 2nd round.. you get the idea)

the other big question mark still up for grabs this summer...
where the fuck is federov going?

Posted by BlAcKNoVa on Jul-14-2003 22:49:

To the Capitals maybe? lol Me being a huge Caps fan would love to see a stright up Jagr for Federov deal. Has been rumours, but those have quieted down the past couple weeks.

I'm just happy to see Kariya and Selanne on a line again, they were so much fun to watch together when they were in Anaheim together. They can put out some damn amazing numbers..

I'm glad that they came to Colorado, but I'm dissapointed Kariya left Anaheim, that's my team! The thing I hate is now the Avs are like Detroit, just buying talent although they've always done that, just to a lesser extent. That always pisses me off, it's crap when a team can basically just buy a cup.

But I'll most definitely be buying tickets to see them this year.

Posted by sebby on Jul-18-2003 19:51:

I'd like to say that the Avs will win the cup this upcoming season, but I'd have to agreee with what's already been said here. Nowadays, Goaltending and Defense wins the Cup. You all saw how what happened last season. Colorado should have focused on getting a great goalie along with a couple great defensemen instead of just boost their offense. But that's just my opinion.

colorado are gonna be the next NY Rangers

Posted by PeacefulWarrior on Jul-21-2003 05:32:

let's all say it together: "2004...Stanley...Cup"
