Mastering + Reason

Hey ta's, i am having trouble with my mastering levels. my mix is spot on but wen i export the song it is very quiet. Iv had no problems with my sound card so i dont think it could be that...any ideas, please help...

try changing your audio output (soundcard) then transport to wav.

this is a general problem most reason tracks have, only a few pro users get it at a good loudness level ( without external software )

1. Export the wav file.

2. Open up your favourite wav editor

3. Cut all frequencies below 50hz !

4. Normalise your track !

5. Use a limiter / compressor / finalizer / mastering plugin or preset to reach maximum loudness.

6. Now it should sound as a loud as most pro productions...

Hi,

Are you playing the files you exported with Mediaplayer? You can raise the volume on it. The same counts for other programs of course.

If you want to raise the volume of your tracks with mastering you can use Ozone. It has everything for mastering and also a limiter wich can raise the volume. It has also a good manual.

Yeah, ozone has a volume maximizer. very usefull.

Just make sure you export your tracks from reason with ZERO CLIPPING. I usually set reason's master volume to 65 or so, just to have complete control over the levels, then just give it a boost with ozone after you've exported.

its just a plugin that you can run through a wav editor program. I use Sound Forge, and it works nicely.

In my opinion it's not correct to say that a much too low volume is only a problem of reason that you can completely solve in extern programs.
The problem is the mixdown... If this work has been done well, you nearly have the volume you want to have, without much correction in an wav editor.
And: Don't use too much compression, that brakes more than it repairs...

the frequencies are below the common trance and hardtrance bassdrums and basslines .If you cut them, the rest of your mix will have more space to unfold. Check professional productions using your favourite analyzer tool and you will recognize a "low cut" about 50hz.

Your bass will probaly have more power after cutting off all below 50hz, at least it will have more space to unfold...

I did a spectrum analysis of three tracks:

Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Solar Stone Chillout Mix) 320kb/s
DJ Ti�sto - Magik Journey (original mix) 192kb/s
BT - Godspeed 128kb/s

and each one has a boost in the 0 - 2,000 Hz range, as apposed to a cut. The only thing cut was consistantly around 16,000 Hz. This is to keep the high end under control during playback on club systems, and other high efficiancy speaker systems.

Where have you seen the cut at 50 Hz?

I would recommend leaving the lower end in the mix. I isolated the frequencies below 50Hz, and I could definately hear them until I reached 33Hz, which I am guessing is because I hit bottom with my 8" Merak sub. And I'm also guessing if I had a good sub (SVS PCi 20-39 or equivilant) I would still hear frequencies extending to the 25Hz range.

If you were to remove these frequencies, there would be a noticeable difference in low end bass, but only if you listen critically with a good sub.

Why cut any frequences? Use the right limiters and other mastering plug ins and you won't experience these problems.

You should try out Dynasone, T-Racks, Waves L1- Ultramaximizer + and dB-M-Multiband Limiter.
