this is WEIRD, no Tour de France thread so far?? Ok, this is one

Post all your thoughts about it, and your comments on the winnars so far. Also a forecast for the winnar?? Mine: Lance Armstrong...

T'days winnar: Alessandro Petacchi; man....that bloke is pretty strong!!!

First week of the tour Sprinters Teams/yellow jersey holder team are at the front defending and attacking.

Second week = Mountains/polka dot jersey, this is where the yellow jersey/polka dot will be decided.

After the Mountains= Sprinters/green jersey are back in contention.

Yellow Jersey= overall leader of the race based on time.

Green Jersey = Sprinters/Points Jersey, each flat stage has sprints where points are given, points/time are also given to the winner of each flat stage and lower places. that�s why sprinters sometimes wear the yellow jersey in the opening week of the tour.

Polka dot jersey/King of the mountains = this one is for the climbers obviously. Each mountain has a category, smaller climbs are lower and higher climbs are of coz higher category, higher category climbs get you more points, if the stage is a mountain top finish the winner gets points and time towards this jersey as well. Lower places also get points towards this jersey.

Teams are there to help the top riders of the team, take US postal for example, lance Armstrong will not do any work until its needed to either take the yellow jersey or defend the yellow jersey. In the mountain stages his team will ride in front of him, giving him the slipstream, setting the pace at what lance wants, once his riders cannot set the pace any longer lance will take over and defend/attack for the yellow jersey.

armstrong doesnt look strong, but i still think he is the strongest
he knows he will win time on his concurrents in the time trial
and i think he will make the difference in the pyrenees
he was just riding defensive, he didnt have to attack on alpe d'huez
he already had 30sec on his nearest concs

but we have to admit armstrong is not as strong as the past years
he did 3min17sec slower on alpe d'huez then in 2001

Word! I want Armstrong to win and I think the only way he wouldnt be able to win this year is through a accident like Belokis. But Vinokourov is a real joy to watch. Hope McEwen will take som sprint victories the forthcoming days or why not Hushovd.

yesterday a nice show from petachi-piil, it was nice when they shook hands, always good to see that in sport.

any thoughts on armstrong? does anyone think hes not that strong anymore??

uhm, that would be sacchi.. petacchi left the tour a few days ago, he was intimidated by the mountains ahead of him..

back to 1 minute now.. i don't understand why they waited for lance to come back after he fell.. "a fair fight" my *$$! he just had bad luck.. when the crew has problems refuelling michael schumacher's formula one car because something got stuck in the hose, you don't see his rivals wait for him to come back either?!

What would you have done in Ullrich's situation? Taking the lead and after winning the stage hearing all those ppl about your fair play?? Don't think such action could be appreciated by everybody.

I think, in formula one it's something else; about a mistake during fuelling it's the mistake of the team. Don't think you can compare these things...

how about when schumacher hits a rabbit and has to come in for an extra pitstop? you won't see anybody wait for him to come back! this has nothing to do with fair play, it is just bad luck, it comes with the sport.. if i were lance armstrong, i wouldn't be at all happy with my victory yesterday!

but did Jan help him to win? He only put it right, like the standings were before Lance fall. To win the stage, Lance did it all himself. I think he can be proud of himself by doing this after he fell. I can only give Jan a great compliment by waiting for him, this made the stage more interesting.

In Formula 1 it's not possible to do such thing. You have only 20 drivers which is impossible to wait of one of them of course

If you know your cycling and your Tour you ought to know that Lance has done the same thing a earlier Tour when Jan went of the road. How can you critizize that action? If you are going to make parallells with Formula 1 you should in that case be critisizing the rivals to Schumacher. But you cant compare a sport where the pitstops are a part of the tactics to a sport where crashes aren�t a part of the tactics. More sportsmanship in professional sports godamn!

come out on top after the time trial.

Will Hamilton be able to shave off almost 4mins from Vinokourov to get a podium finish? Tall order.

ps: tor, bout the 'fair play', i dont think you can really compare those 2 sports. and Jan didnt help him to win, cuz lance was speeding up big time at that time and was leaving Jan behind...

I dont know but I find it hard that it would happen. The green jersey is also up for grabs tomorrow so the sprinters will be in front to pick some points (as always in the Paris stage). The 100 years jubilee prize is up for grabs aswell so Hushovd and O�Grady will be aiming for top positions aswell. I have no idea how it will develop but it would undoubtfully be cool to see Jan and Lance sprinting for points and the win.

Well, Armstrong wins this tour de france, but it wasn't as convincing as the previous 4 years.
Armstrong was very lucky this tour and his opponents weren't :
- Hamilton's fracture
- Ullrich's flu during the first week and his fall during the last time trial
- Beloki's fall
- ...

So I think this is Armstrong's last tour-de-france-victory, unless the old (strong) Lance returns.
