'Latin' dances

Yep, a lil' off topic, but this is still geared mainly towards those in the GTA.

Anyhow, I know some of you right here on TA who are already skilled (or at least have displayed interest) not only when it comes to dancing to trance and techno, but also to some other stuff like tango, salsa and merengue.

So... Where'd you go to learn? What kind of dancing did you learn? How did you like it? What tips do you have for someone starting out? Where are some good spots in the GTA to test out your skills?
Whatever info you wanna give me, I'll gladly take.

Latin dances!!!

im actually dying to learn any latin style dance there is...
All i know how to dance right now is rock n roll (which is actually pretty hard to dance )

I took Beginner I Salsa & Merengue about 5 years ago... I already forgot the majority (other than the basics) but it's the kind of thing where if you do it ya need a good partner and you gotta practice between classes or else you'll forget a lot of shit...

...hardest part is getting used to the structured dancing (especially when ur used to doing your own thing all the time)

Check this place - I took lessons with him and lucked out since it was a smaller class (only about 5 couples) and you got individual attention...

i dunno how to dance salsa .. but i usually have it streamin outta my computer all day heh ..

if you are latin then its in your blood to dance :P i never took clases (i should for salsa) but i have been told that im a natural.

best way to learn it's to go to a school, or if you think you have it in you, then get some celia cruz (cuban music) or some sonora dinamita (cumbia from colombia) or if you want to go for the hard stuff get some banda machos (quebradita from mexico) and try it yourself, or also go to latin clubs, most clubs were they play latin music, have classes during the day, or you can hook up with a latin se�orita and ask her to teach you :P

im suprised you asking, brazilians dance like whoa!! the girls are amazing with all that carnival stuff, batucada or whatever you call it :P

Actually, you can really learn anywhere! Almost all dancing schools teach latin/spanish/ballroom dancing. You could even learn at the YMCA, or your own school. Most Universities have their own personal instructors and special student rates. The YMCA doesn't hurt the pocket book either. But if your really shy, just rent a video from the library or something. As weird as it sounds they really do work...plus you can learn at your own pace, for free.

I remember flipping through one of those community centre guides/classes offered etc. booklets a while back and I saw a couple of latin dance courses. My parents took a couple of ballroom dancing classes at a community centre and they said it was pretty good so you might wanna check out what's being offered at your local community/rec centre.

oh yeah .. and here's one of the BEST salsa streams i listen too .. listenin to it now !

Date a Latin Person . Just make sure u pracitse a lot with them. I however did not practise enough yet still must learn. Tequila helps u pick it up faster. Just not too much.

It is in my blood and it does come naturally to me, but I'd still like to properly learn different dances.

Celia Cruz is scaaary! I really couldn't tell if it was a woman or a drag queen when I first saw her. Hahaha. Listening to some of the other stuff though is great. Can't help but to want to bust a move...

We brazilians are nuts when it comes to dancing, and I love it, lol! Even my mother reminisces about the good ol' days with frevo, merengue, samba, forr�, etc. Ooo... That reminds me... Can't forget capoeira! That stuff requires mad skills though.

Tequila could be a nice touch, but it only makes one 'friendlier', lol.

Man, it's all about freestylin' robot dancin' for me. Fluid Mechanics I like to call it , as I'm not totally mechanical with it like the typical robot.

Latin Weddings .. crash some of those. Free dancing lessons and liqz Guaranteed.

then try the latin robot, its the same as normal robot but looks like they put extra oil on you.

My limit is 18 shots and I plan not to break that record. But the best AND cheapest way to learn Latin Dancing is to Date a latino/latina and have them practise with you. Tequila sold seperately

I work at the Cort House on Church and Adilade st. And every friday from 9-10pm they have free lessons on salsa or marenge and I belive every month it's a diffrent style of dancing but it's a spanish music night. It's still multicaltural and it's free for lady's before ten pm. So if you want to check it out pm and I'll get you in ok

Since I'm latin by default..lol I'm a natural, or so ppl say when they see me dance to spanish/latin music.
I loove dancing, it is part of my soul, it's in my blood, without dance, life would have no meaning.
About the dancing classes, just like many here have said, lots of latin clubs offer dancing lessons for free if you get there early, around 9:00 or so and they usually go for an hour or 2.
Since you are Brazile�a, you already got the basic rythm that you need to get going with latin dancing. I suggest you get the basic steps, (which are not hard to learn btw) and then feel the music, using those basic steps you can modify them as much as you want to any type of latin or non-latin music you dance to.

One thing I really don't agree with, is the ppl that dance to latin music with their minds repeating (1, 2, 3, 4....1, 2, 3, 4) that is soo bad! I totally go for feeling the music, the rythm and then just moving your body to it. I'd say for some latin music, ie: Salsa and Bachata, you have to have a good partner to dance to it, otherwise it doesn't look as good. But if you are doing a good job at it then it doesn't really matter////// Ok enough ranting, go to latin clubs eraly, you'll find tons of them give some sort of classes for free before the actual funtime begins.
