you peeps are not gonna believe this one

Today, my mom brought my great-grandmother to visit me. My Granna is 92 and I never see her except at funerals and weddings so I was real surprised to get a visit from her. I was totally shocked when she started to scold me for upsetting that old lady who hit my car (I already told you bout that old lady driver who sideswiped my car a couple weeks ago.) This is the main part of the convo.

Granna: why for you get ticket for Strega Rosa?

Me: what are you talking about?

Mom: the accident you had a couple weeks ago, the other driver was Rosa Ianniello, dont you remember her?

Me: sure I remember her, she hit me

Granna: but why for you get her ticket?

Me: Granna, she was driving the wrong way and she hit me, thats why she got a ticket. I didnt have anything to do with that!

Granna: but she is strega! She dont get ticket.

Me: whats up with that! Shes old and cant drive for shit!

Granna: she is strega, she has the eye

Me: well, her eye didnt work for her that time, BECAUSE SHE HIT ME!

Then, both my mom and my granna grabbed their rosaries and started in crying and crossing themselves, praying to the Holy Mother to save our family from the witch!
OMG well I was praying too.SAVE ME FROM MY CRAZY ITALIAN FAMILY!!

It's funny. I have a friend in Canada, and he says 'mum' too.

If you really want to go redneck, you can say, "ma."

As in:

"Ma the pigs needs a butcherin'."

relax with your grandmother, if she's 92, probably isn't at the best mental level.

yes, yes, yes, when i was a kid, if i was 5 minutes late for a meal, it was like the end of the world or sumthin. im 22 and married and my mum still brings "leftovers" over to my house a couple times a week. im not complainin tho, cos she makes the best lasagna and spaghetti. i totally love spaghetti and her sauce is fantastic (my husband loves it too, but he isnt Italian, he is Irish, ). and she makes the most delicious cannolli. i love that when she has leftovers, haha!!

u got to love italian families...only culture that beats down there kids with cooking utensils......i used to get sooo many wooden spoons broken over my head.....then my mom and nonna got sick of buying new wooden spoons so they sitched over to the steel spoons....i once got the frying pan...the frying pan took the shape of my face so my omlets to this day look like a self portrait.....they look like this --->

sorry. "strega" is a term in Italian for a witch (usually an older woman) who can cast spells, make potions, read the future, stuff like that. my Granna still believes that stregas can cause all kinds of problems if someone makes her mad.
thats why she made me go and apologize to Strega Rosa, so our family is safe

Posted by loudcloud on Jul-14-2003 03:13:

Strega is an Italian female witch, who practices stregheria (spelling?) the religion of Italian Witches. Stregone is a male Italian witch
