-- Goa = separate genre?
Goa = separate genre?
Lately I've been seeing the genre "goa" appear . . . what makes this different that regular trance/progressive trance? What classifies something as "Goa Trance"?
Have you heard of Psy Trance? Imo Goa is very similar to Psy, much more similar than to any other genre of trance.
Infected Mushroom is Goa, I'm sure you've heard some material from them. If not, seek it out, that's your best example of Goa. Atleast from my understanding of it, maybe someone more knowledgeable will come along.

First you need to know there's no difference between Goa and Psy, it is the same genre of music. I prefer to call it Goa Trance. It is a subgenre of Trance because it uses psychodelic elements (that's why some people call it Psy) as strange noises, fast beats and very complex and unpredictable sounds. You definitely need to hear some of it to understand it. As you seem to know a little about it, I'll give you some classics for you to check out:
Man With No Name - Teleport
Infected Mushroom - Bust A Move
Yahel - Intelligent Life
Astral Projection - Mahadeva
I really like Infected Mushroom as they have the wider spectrum in terms of sounds, check out these tunes and you will see they seem to be from different artists:
Infected Mushroom - Dancing with Kadafi
Infected Mushroom - Shakawkaw
Infected Mushroom - Overload
Summary of goa:
Astral Projection - Aurora Borealis
get anything from infected mushroom / astrix / gms / skazi / alien project
these artist are goa/psy trance for me

Psy doesn't really have as much melody or synths as Goa.
If a track is produced by a DJ from Israel it's Psy/Goa...
Seriously, the name Goa comes from an area in India that was popular with hippies in the 60-70's. Goa/Psy trance has a strong jazz influence and is normally associated with drugs (therefore, the name "Psy").
Astral Projection and Infected Mushroom are probably the best known
Goa/Psy producers - look for their tracks or sets.
This site will answer all your your questions about psytrance and goa trance
www.psynews.org
Check out the reviews sections - it has pretty much every goa album ever made
the ones highlighted red are recommended
In general I personally differentiate between psy and goa
psy - generally tends to have a more futuristic sound
goa - has a more earthy sound to it (natural sounding instruments)
Dont know if that makes sense to you guys??
Then you can further classify it as
minimal psy- eg. Atmos, Ticon, Matenda, etc..
full on psy- eg. Psydrop, MWNN, Infected mushroom
"psy pop"- eg. Alien Project, 1200 Mics, ect <-(the artists that haven't bothered to progress the sound of psy, instead just rip off and reuse the standard GMS baselines)
I personally cant stand psypop its ok to listen to 1 or 2 times then it just gets really boring (ie. throw away trance). There needs to be innovation not immitation...

I also agree that goa and psy are totally different. Psy is just that, psy-trance, the style is quite easy to get, as it's quite fast, with tons of synths making weird noises, and as it was mentioned it rarely ever has a melody, it's just a repetition of those sounds over and over. Now about goa, that's more in the spiritual side, it's like a blend between progressive and melodic-uplifting trance, with a little twist and faster bpms. It has quite a hard feel to it that makes you feel totally high, way more than the "normal" psy-trance, it's quite nice once you get to like it, it kinda relaxes you while at the same time makes you wanna jump and run around like crazy (no, i'm not on drugs heh) it's quite special.
