Question for Audiophiles

Ok, so i have these shitty computer speakers ( 4 7watt satelites and a 15 watt woofer)

i need to upgrade this badly!!!!

my budget is around 250$ canadian, im looking for a COMPUTER setup however im not sure if i want/need to get normal speakers, or just made for computer speakers such as altec lansing

if i go for non-computer speakers do i need bookshelve + a sub( looks kinda expensive) or floor speakers ( also look expensive)

so i think i want normal computer speakres, however all i do is listen to music, i dont watch dvds or play games. so which computer speakers are best for my purposes ?

btw im aware i need a good soundcard to go with all this

* in addition what about hooking up a mini system to my computer?

I'm kinda with Flec on that one.

Unfortunately $250 seems to get you not much more that the pox.

If you are mosty just listening to music, go straight from your sound-card to your stereo!

Soundblaster Audigy + Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's = HEAVEN! That's my set up.

Although, Klipsch will hit the wallet hard...maybe try finding some of those Logitech speakers everyone goes on about.

get the z-640, a 5.1 70 watts i think for around $70 here. its decent but it wont blow u away like the z680. trance never sound so good on the computer with it

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX is evne better but only a 2.1 but 200 watts power. it is like around $170

I'm still not sold on the whole 5.1 thing.

If you put in enough effort in you mix you can get pretty much the same vibe with two speakers. You can get the "front to back", or the "circling" vibe with a clever use of doppler, verb and EQing.

.......Oh and we only have two ears

Have you heard a good 5.1 system yet? I've turned off my center speaker on my 5.1 setup and it's amazing the difference just one speaker makes. I've been spoiled by these speakers, and everytime I go over my friend's house (he's got a 2.1 system by Altec Lansing) I ask him how he can live with those speakers

Interesting, I'll try to keep an open mind on the issue but I can't see any 5.1 upgrades happening at my place..... not in the foreseeable future at any rate.

Do you like to kick back with the cans on (a very nice set of course)?

Also, I did hear a few old quadraphonic albums on a friends quad turntable. IMO they should've kept that going instead... it did a bit more for ME at any rate.
