Newcastle United Thread
Direct all of your newcastle rlated topics into this thread.
I read the other day that freddy sheperd has stated that newcastle will only being purchasing 1 more player this season. This purchase will only take place if newcastle qualify for the champions league.
We need a right back. I think we should try to get Mills from Leeds on the cheap. He had a bit of a crap season last season but apparently that was due to personal problems. Leeds are having a bit of a clearance sale anyway, and we need to close the gap on Man Utd and Arsenal.
Other than that, I don't think we should unsettle our squad with loads of new faces. I'm glad Newcastle are excercising some restraint in the transfer market.
Last season we got off to a bad start and spent the whole season playing catch-up, but if we can get at least 4 points from our first 2 games (Leeds away, Man U at home) I'll be happy.
Our 5 transfer listed players don't seem to be generating any interest, btw.

I hope so, but we've been linked with every player under the sun this summer. I'll believe it when I see it. I think he recently signed a 5 year deal with Leeds.
I'm not Mills' biggest fan, but there aren't many quality defenders (espescially not British ones) on the market at the moment and given Leeds financial situation he'd probably be quite cheap. He can be a pretty foul tackler though, which would only add to our growing reputation as a team of thugs.
There's also rumours in the papers we're after Michael Bridges, but I doubt there's any truth in that.
A source at Newcastle has told the Evening Chronicle that we don't want to sell Dyer but everyone has their price and his is 25M.
Bobby Robson said: "As far I'm concerned there's not an inkling of truth in it. It's a fabricated story. That's my feeling about it."
Dyer's agent described the rumours as "just paper talk".

whats ur predictions for tomorrows game against birmingham. I reckon easy 4-0 win
Not a bad game today, although I was hoping we'd batter the shit out of them.
In the first half our midfield was top class, the brummies were struggling to keep it in our half and we constantly had them on the back foot. After Speed and Bowyer were subbed it went downhill a bit and they came into the second half with some decent chances. Harper's handling looked a bit dodgy. Both penalties were fully deserved, as was the red card. Stern John's miss was fucking hilarious
Viana scored from 25 yards out a second after the final whistle went, but it wasn't counted. Was nice to see Shola get a goal (awesome cross from Bellers) and Cort get a feature (even if it was only the last 5 minutes).
Chelsea should make easy work of Malaysia tommorow and play it out with Birmingham on Saturday. I hope we can stamp down our authority with a good win over Chelsea, so we can start the season on a high.
Howay the lads.
Champs League Draw:
Newcastle will play either Partizan Belgrade or Djurgarden.
That's probably Partizan then. Partizan also play in black and white stripes and have some mental supporters. Wish I could afford a trip to Belgrade if we play them, it'll be mental!
Djurgarden are from Stockholm and drew 0-0 with West Ham in a friendly.
Our first game is away. It won't be easy but it could have been worse, we could have got someone tricky like Benfica.
Here's a full list of the 3rd round qualifying round:
CSKA Moscow or Vardar v Sparta Prague
MTK Budapest or HJK Helsinki v Kaunas or CELTIC
RANGERS v FC Copenhagen or Sliema Wanderers
Austria Vienna v Marseille
Club Brugge v Borussia Dortmund
Sheriff Tiraspol or Shakhtar Donetsk v Lokomotiv Moscow
Lazio v Benfica
Dynamo Kiev v Maribor or Dinamo Zagreb
Bohemian or Rosenborg v Deportivo La Coruna
Grasshoppers v AEK Athens
Zilina or Maccabi Tel Aviv v CHELSEA
Celta Vigo v Leotar or Slavia Prague
Partizan Belgrade or Djurgarden v NEWCASTLE
Galatasaray v Pyunik or CSKA Sofia
Rapid Bucharest or Anderlecht v Wisla Krakow or Omonia
Tirana or Grazer AK v Ajax
what bell does 'philippe albert' ring to you guys?
any thoughts bout him?
(to the tune of Rupert the Bear)
Phillipe, Phillipe Albert!
Everyone knows his name...
Phillipe Albert scored the 5th goal against Man Utd, lobbing Schmeichel when we hammered them 5-0. I think it's safe to say noone here has forgotten him
FF is in LA securing a "major deal" according to Sky Sports. He's booked into the same hotel as Man Utd chairman Peter Kenyon, but Kenyon denies that Freddy's presence has anything to do with them.
Meanwhile in Kuala Lumpur, Newcastle and Chelsea are booked into the same hotel, meaning our and their top brass will no doubt come into contact.
Are we after someone, or is this all incidental?
FORZA DIF!
I hope we beat Partizan and get to play the game against Newcastle in the third round. It wont be easy, especially considering the tough awaygame in Belgrad, but I believe we have a really good squad, incredible for being a swedish team. You never know, Helsinborg, another swedish team, was able to knock Inter out of the qualifiers two seasons ago. To meet Newcastle, with their great suport and top squad with players like Shearer, Bellamy, Dyer, Robert etc would be amazing. And we were in the first division only three seasons ago!
Djurgrden plays the "Ajax model" (4-2-1-3) and very offensive for a swedish team.
If we do meet look out for these players:
Kim Kllstrm - Swedens biggest talent and without a doubt the best player in allsvenskan. great vision and passing ability. Works hard. Great shot and good at freekicks. Regular in the national team nowadays, has already scored 10 goals in 15 games from midfield this season. Only a matter of time before he leaves us for professional football in Europe.
Andreas Isaksson - 22 years. First keeper in the national team. Great reflexes, agility and reach. Only weakness is that he's a bit bad with his feet. Used to belong to Juventus, but came home because of the hard competition for places there.
Jesper Blomqvist - If he comes back to form. Just signed from Charlton. Used to play with Man Utd, Parma, Milan etc.. Could be great again, but has alot of problems with injuries.
Toni Kuivasto - New signing from a Norwegian club, I dont remember which tho. 40 caps for Finland and has had a marvelous start at the club. Strong, tough tackler. Good heading ability.
Hope someone found this post interesting. haha
Kim Kllstrm has been linked too liverpool the whole of last season if he is as good as you say i hope mr houllier is able too sign him.
I believe he could be great even in the premiership. Some people thinks hes to slow for a league on the continent, but I dont buy that because his overall skill is amazing. He stands above the rest in allsvenskan and I believe he's strong psycologically enough to adapt to life in a professional club. Hes been linked with 20 clubs or so in the last year, but since the transfermarket is practically dead, only Empoli seems to have made a serious bid, but that was turned down because it was too low.

you don't have the team to go far in the champions league
you just simply don't
i would like to see more english teams involved but I don't see it happening. Same every year as celtic and rangers....they just don't have the extra talent.
We just missed the quarter finals last season which is as far as Man Utd got. We outplayed Inter Milan on their home turf and we beat Juventus, a side who quite frankly outclassed Real Madrid. We've also got the extra experience which we didn't have last year.
The Asia Cup yesterday was a bit dissappointing, but for the first half we played a very under-strength side. Chelsea definitely had the better of the game, although they never looked like beating Given who looked world class in goal. Chelsea's long ball tactics certainly made them statistically the better side, something the commentators were keen to remind us of, but the majority of their "chances" came to nothing, just like ours. The pitch was pretty small which explains why it was like pinball at times. As for the penalties, I'd rather JJ learnt his lesson in a friendly than when it really matters. Bernard as usual played excellently, despite winning only a free kick after someone (Gronkjaer?) rammed their studs into his groin deliberately. Andy D'Urso later booked Bernard for a foul, which was hardly fair, but then this wouldn't be the first time D'Urso has shown a disliking for Newcastle.
Shearer was unlucky to hit the bar. If that had gone in I think we would have won.
as freddy sheperd is in America, What do u reckon hes doing.
Theres 3 teams there, Man utd, barcelona and juventus.
hes either
1. selling dyer
2. trying to buy kluivert
3. trying to buy davids (Davids wants to come to england so this may happen).
Another thing. I see that it looks like that newcastle are going to be creating a team in China. It loks like its gonna be called Hong Kong United.
There are two more recent rumours about his "major deal". One is about a possible Gallowgate extension, the other is about a Quentin Tarantino movie set in Newcastle!
This was an article in the Sunday Sun, before Freddy jetted off to LA:
quote:
Sunday Sun: "A north football club has emerged as one of the favourites to feature in a blockbuster film to be made by Quentin Tarantino's production team. The Sunday Sun revealed last month that movie moguls have been in talks with soccer chiefs to try to decide which club to use for the big-budget flick Goal! Producer Mike Jefferies hinted then that the big three teams in our region were in contention. Industry insiders have since ruled out Middlesbrough and Sunderland, though, leaving Newcastle United as the region's only contenders in with a chance of hitting Hollywood. The movie is a co-production between Mike's company, Milkshake Films, and Lawrence Bender, producer of Tarantino flicks such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown. Mike said: "I cannot comment on who it will be yet as we still don't know, but I can 99 per cent confirm that it will be a Northern team. "The decision is being driven by the degree of interest and co-operation from each of the clubs we are talking to." Goal! tells the story of a young Latino player from the US city of Los Angeles who comes to play in the English Premiership only to struggle with the harsh North winter. It is expected to generate huge spin-offs and marketing opportunities in America as interest in the game there has hit fever pitch following the US team's semi-final showing at the last World Cup. Mike said: "Lawrence and I fly into Paris on Friday to have a million meetings scheduled to coincide with the timing of the Confederations Cup Final. "We will then be in England on Tuesday and Wednesday having more meetings before coming back to LA, so we should have a clearer idea after this trip. "All I can say about Newcastle United is that we are more than interested in featuring the club, and its brilliant tradition, as the team which our hero plays for. "The city of Newcastle and the Geordie people would undoubtedly provide a wonderful social backdrop against which our movie's story would unfurl. "There is a lot of interest from a few fantastic clubs about Goal! They all seem to get the benefits of exposing their brand, through the movie, to the exploding US soccer market." Shooting is still scheduled to take place in January and February 2004.

www.NUFC.com : Less interesting than the film idea is that Freddy Shepherd & Douglas Hall are in LA to meet two venture capitalists who are funding a hotel scheme on the land surrounding the St. James' Park Metro. Again, a conceivable notion given that a public notice recently featured in the local press stating that NUFC were applying for a liquor licence for that area. Part of this development could include the much talked about extension to the Gallowgate end with bars, casinos and hotels all part of the plans.

What capacity do you reckon it would be if we could just get the Gallowgate extended? 60,000? 65,000?
What about if we got the Gallowgate and East stand extended? I reckon it'd be over 70,000 easy. How many cities have a 70,000+ seat stadium right next to the city centre?
It already dominates the city skyline, it'd look amazing if they could finish the job.
Was anyone at Central Station on Sunday night?
Only there was a canny big fight between mackem bastards returning from their Hibs match and toon fans waiting for their train.
quote:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3100305.stm Investigations are continuing into how a mass-brawl between rival football fans was allowed to break out at Newcastle Central Station, despite a high police presence. Fighting spilled out across the station after Newcastle fans confronted Sunderland supporters as they arrived back from a match in Edinburgh at 2100 BST on Saturday. The police had been alerted to the possibility of trouble, and although a team of officers was sent to the station, they could not stop the violence. A nearby bar was damaged during the fighting and five people were arrested. Police officers refused to confirm how many people were involved but eyewitness reports suggest it may have been up to 100. A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "A group of Sunderland fans, believed to be returning from the Hibs V Sunderland game got off at Newcastle Central Station and became involved in a confrontation in the Central Station area with a rival group of Newcastle fans. "Police attending the scene arrested five males for public order and criminal damage offences. "Enquiries into the incident are continuing." |
