I'm getting the same tables soon, so I'd like to know as well.
Well with the hardshell you have to attach a cartridge to it as a needle and a hardshell won't work alone. Has to be the hardshell and the cart connected to it then you push the needle into the cartrdige depending on what kind you have. Then there are OTHER types of cartridges that have needles already on them and for those kinds you don't even need to use the headshell, just screws right onto the tonearm.

I'm getting 2 stanton 505II carts and 2 Shure WhiteLabel carts. stantons for friends using, whitelabels for my using, and stantons for my practices. So for the whitelabels, I'm guessing I'll have to remove the headshells from the technics and use the shures. and for the stantons, the headshells stay on.
Hmm...
You will pretty much know if u need a Headshell for the type of needle that your purchasing. If the back of the stylus/cartridge has 4 little pieces coming out of it w/ 4 colors (red blue yellow green) then u need the headshell. If the needle/cartridge your buying is long and has a circle on the end (that fits the tonearm on your turntable)....then u dont need the headshell. Its pretty seld explanatory once you have a good look at your equipment!
Laterz,
Shook
