dodgy auctions?

ok so i'm looking at buying a car sometime soon, and was talking to a friend about buying one second hand, and he recomended checking out auctions where like the cars have either been stolen or wern't manufactured correctly or what not and you end up bidding for the car and usually get it for a real cheap price. This applies not only for cars, but for any item up for auction.

Ok so this isnt the first time ive heard of this type of selling before, but ive never really looked into it, can someone here please confirm this for me and if so give me some info/links to where i might be able to look into this.

Or on the other hand tell me im gullible gimp who should tell his mate to STFU..

i have no idea where you could go to bid on stolen stuff, except police auctions. At least there your not going to get the owner calling the the police saying that your driving their car. Unless of course your name is homer and you buy snakes car, but if thats the case at least youll have a whacky adventure.

Why would you want bid on a car that hasnt been manufactured properly?

so you could repair it for a price and still come away with a bargain i suppose.

But in all honesty, i really have no knowedge on the subject, which is why i brought it up, as for the police auctions, do they happen reguarly?

yeah spoke to some other people today who confirmed it for me.....apparently a freind of a friend of his bout a WRX from one of these police auctions for like $15,000

any melbournians know where these are held?

I dont know about this stoeln car auction held by the cozza's, but i do know of an Auction where u can get either cars which are damaged from an accident, government cars, repo'd and general ppl wawnting to sell their cars quick. This is where i picked my car up from, and u can come across some real bargains now and then. they have a web site and are in Altona. www.fowles.com.au They have full list of cars for sale every week, and some have pics. Hope it helps, and what sort of car u after btw? just wondering.

Yeah, re-possesed cars are always auctioned off (usually by some authority or another), and apparently, you can get a good price for cars.. albeit, ive never been to one..

I've seen everything from crashed ferrari 355's, through to s15 silvias, wrx's, integra type R's, 200's etc, but of course you're not going to find any imports (ie. silvias, 180's, skylines / supras 's etc.) but eh? and there are ex government vehicles for sale too.

also, have a look in your advertiser for auctions (thats what it's called here in SA,) they have vehicle auction listings and what not.

A scam some ppl do which ive heard of @ these auctions is, that a some guys will organise to steal a someones car, strip it too its bare minimum (engine and shassy) then dump it, then when it turns up @ these auctions they will pick it up dirt cheap. and with the parts they stripped from the exact car they will reassemble it. if ya get what i mean.

Had 2 read it back 2 myself 2 make sure it made sense..

The only place I know in Melb is the Fowles auction group... someone had their website address in an earlier post.

I've been to 2 of them. Put simply, you have to know which ones are good cars, mark them down, and then bid for them, and only bid to what you consider is a cheap price.

My uncle picked up some great bargains that made my jaw drop... sure they had a bit of rust, but he's a mechanic and knew a good car mechaniclly after taking a look around... and rust can be fixed easily.

So get someone who's a mechanic to go with you before the auction starts and check out the cars and give you a good estimated price... also go there a few times and get used to the kind of prices for each car before you start bidding...

That's probably the best advice I can give you. With a bit of common sense you can pick up a really good car really cheap..

woah im loving this fowles site, today there having an auction on a 200sx 2001 model, i think i might just make my way over there today and let you guys know how much it sells for.

check out Jupps auction group too (they used to get all old cop cars by old still under warranty)

ok so i went there and found it really interesting, the 200sx was passed in at $24,500, i asked the auctioneer afterwards why it didnt sell and was told that the seller had a reserve of $27,000, which is still a pretty good price when considering when looking on carpoint for the exact same car type, exact same kilometres, and even the same colour, the seller watned $37,000 for it, and it was just a standard (no touch ups)

anyway very cool stuff, have to keep a eye out for a car within my price range though, $8000 - $12000, hopefully an ex cop car will be up for grabs soon
