Computer upgrade/parts

m looking to upgrade and fix my computer which has been out of commission for almost 2 years now(too lazy to fix it) and I was wondering if there any TAs here that knew a thing or two about computers...
I built mine a while ago, and after a year and half, my power supply just gave up and fried my motherboard.
I don't need a sound,graphics card, CDROM drive, or any other uax. peripherals, but I was wondering what I should look out for while I'm shipping for my new parts(i.e should I go with a P4 or stick with an Athlon, what kind of mother board etc, how much the power supply should be etc...)

if your looking for a cpu under 2.4 gigs (or the amd xp2400) go for amd, its even choice between a p2.4c and xp2500, after them the only way to go is intell

I haven't been observant of the computer parts industry, so I don't know what's new and stuff...I'm looking for something that'll give me the most for my money.
I'll probably use my computer for personal audio work, so I need a computer that's stable and quick.
Any brand names for parts?

Get an i865 chipset based motherboard, but wait a month until they revise the board voltages, so then they will support the next generation P4 (or Pentium 5???) CPUs (codenamed Prescott). If you're going Intel, wait a month...

I sometimes build pc's for ppl, and do it for great prices, but my stuff is all UK based.

If you give me your ideal amount to spend, I can convert it into pounds and give you specs based on those prices in UK.

yeah it should be, my only advice is to get a good motherboard and a slow cpu, meaning you can upgrade later on down the line. most cases come with psu's these days, they are not quality ones but will do the job

this is a great site for getting parts. Very descriptive, everything has a picture, and the prices are the cheapest you will find on the internet. AND they get excellent reviews from everyone who orders from them. Sometimes free fedex 2-day shipping.

I like AMD over Intel simply based on it being less expensive and more flexible. I am running a Barton AMD 2500+ at speeds over 3200+ GHz..... and the 2500+ is less than $100 now i believe.... As far as motherboards, you will have to get a new one. I recommend Abit, because i went through 3 Asus boards and they sucked. Abit is the next big one that lends itself well to features and overclocking. You will have to get a new motherboard because chances are if your computer is that old, you are running an AT power supply. You will need an ATX, so you may need to get a new power supply.. Then you will have to get new RAM as well, chances are you are running 2100 DIMMs.... You will need to get the new DDR 333-400 MHz... usually 512 MB is sufficient.

So figure on buying AT LEAST a new motherboard, cpu, and RAM if you keep all your optical drives. Just keep in mind, whenever you upgrade your mobo, you 9 times out of 10 need to re-load windows.

as to motherboard make, ive owned asus and ECS boards, DONT get ECS, ive had no problems with my asus boards. also used ABIT on a mates pc and id recomend them as a brand, as well as gigabit and epox besure to read up on www,amdmb.com forums in the forum specifically for each brand to see if theres any majour problems with the board your thinking about
