Downloading from tranceaddict using FTP

Previously when downloading singles from this site I would do the usual (right click, save target as ect) and it would start up straight into CuteFTP and connect automatically then start downloading that way. It was very convenient like that as I only have dial-up access and if I had to leave it and come back it would resume for me.

(This was with Win XP, IE6, CuteFTP 4x)

I just put together a new computer, but am still using the same method to download the files (but with CuteFTP5 this time), but now instead of automatically going into CuteFTP it just downloads the normal way with a little progress window, meaning it won't resume if I get disconnected etc.

My question is, I know that it's possible to download through FTP, so what is the url/username/password to do it manually by opening the FTP program first, since it won't do it automatically any more?

EDIT: Even better, is there some sort of setting in IE/CuteFTP or file association that I can change so it starts doing it automatically again?

Sorry about the huge post!

theres no way to download from ftp.

sometimes a ftpserver isused, but http servers are also used.

if you read at the top of the downloads page there is a recomedation for some download resuming software, use it.

But there is!!!

My old system used to do it automatically, as I outlined in the original post. It just used to start automatically and connect using a username/password (that I cant remember ) in cuteFTP.

Has no one else ever had this happen?? :S

I guess if they haven't and don't know what I'm on about I'll have to use one of those download resume program thingy's.

what part of that dont you understand? ftp server lets you use ftp programs, you cant download using a ftp program from a http server. sometimes the files are located on a ftp server, some on a http (looking at my logs the files have been on http servers recently).

if you look at the links, for example this one

code:
http://www.tranceaddict.com/php/songout.php?id=0517-ar52-hibernation&month=may2003

you can see that is isn't a direct link, it's a link to the "songout.php", which redirects you to the various download-servers. some of these are ftp (both anonymus and user/pass) and http servers; sometimes the php will direct you to a ftp server and cuteftp will work and sometimes it won't cause you were redirected to a http server. it is kind of strange that you didn't have this problem before though...

i'd suggest you to download ReGet or a similar download-manager (just make sure they don't have spyware) as they work with both http and ftp and you can resume your downloads as well.

Ok, thanks for the additional information jonsimmonds and andiH. I guess I didn't realise that both http and ftp servers are used at tranceaddict, I assumed they were all ftp due to the behavior of previous downloads from this site.

I guess this boils down to; if the php file redirects to an ftp server, then cuteFTP should work automatically, but if it redirects to a http server, it will download as normal with the status window etc.

Funny how a month ago (when I last downloaded a few tracks) all the files were on ftp servers and now they're on http servers??

Ah well, looks like ReGet is the go.

Thanks for your help.
