Fluid Night Club - Racism

I thought I'd share this e-mail to contribute on making everyone aware of what is going on.

Is this really happening? Have you guys experienced something similar?

This is a true story which happened to a friend of a friend.

It's hard to believe that in this day and age in Toronto, racism still exists. Myself and a friend (decently dressed) attempted to enter into Fluid night club on Richmond St., Wednesday night and were told by the black bouncer, Carl Campbell, that the Italian owners do not want Black people in their club tonight and to come back on Thursday night. He also added "sorry man, no disrespect" after he refused us entry.
Besides the total absurdity of the fact that this is The "Club District" it is also degrading to observe that a black man is bouncing for club owners that do not want Blacks in their establishment and has the audacity to tell them (untactfully) no disrespect and come back on Thursday.

We are asking that as proud, self respecting, intelligent people that the next time that you are trying to decide where to party and spend your money that you think of this letter and remember that your money should be good enough to spend, on any night of the week, in any club, regardless of your race.

I am asking that you help to spread the word and pass this email along to everyone that you know.

That's a big load of BS on behalf of the club owners...

I don't know anything about Fluid, but that was my fist thought as well.

IF it is true

it's illegal in ontario

and probably subject to human rights complaints

but then again...that's if it true.

Not quite as sickening as what I put up with from this guy in Collingwood

I was gonna spin @ this new club opening called Infusion. Went in to talk to the owner, we got talked about the kind of music gonna be played.

A selection of his comments:

"I don't want a club full of fucking thugs and n!ggers"

"I don't give a fuck what you play as long as the women are dancing and the male bozos keep dishing out money for drinks. Just don't play hip hop and rap the whole damn time, cuz we don't wanna see any fucking n!ggers."

While I told him I would spin, I backed out of whole fucking thing, cuz this guy is a white trask piece of shit.

The club is privately owned; the owners can refuse entry to whomever for whatever reason they wish.

I believe this.

There's an after hour over here who refuses black people too, at one exception. If they come alone or everyone in his group is non-black.

private club has no bearings in the ontario human rights code

then again....a complaint must be filed in order for something to happen.

I don't know jack about law but I think you're correct...

kinda reminds me of a night last year at the Guv when there were "too many old asian men" in the club and if they wanted in they had to pay $100 cover...or the time where if you arrived with no women you had to produce 2 pieces of accepted ID...

unfair but not illegal I believe...

Isn't fluid best known for its hip-hop night anyways? I find it extremely hard to believe that every single black person is rejected from the club. It would just be too bait and troublesome for the club/ promoter to do that.

It's illegal.. Allowing/dissalowing people purely based on their skin color is illegal in Canada and can be prosecuted.

Speaking of which, there have even been cases where US companies(including Microsoft) were sued because they didn't have enough black people working for them.

Speaking of Racism, do you know that US has recently passed a new bill such that if a person from minority group(black or hispanic) is applying to a law school his entrance average is automatically increased by 20 marks(out of 150).(In other words if you are black or hispanic and you graduated high-school with 70 (out of 150) average, university considers it as a 90(out of 150) average).

just no one complains about it

That's right...Fluid has one of the longest going hiphop nights (tuesdays or thursdays???) in Toronto so it wouldn't be a very good business decision for them to cut off a huge fraction of their clientele.

It sounds to me like someone had a bad night at Fluid one night (maybe with a bouncer) and is spreading some unfounded rumours to try to hurt their business.

Without any real facts, I could care less about this rumour... to me you're gossiping and spreading possible untruths based on "word-of-mouth". This bothers me.

I just won't go to Fluid because I've been there and think it sucks anyways.

Minorities get an advantage because of all the disadvantages they've had throughout history? History that neither them nor I were a part of?

Thank god I won't be applying for law school in the states - but law schools up here DO try to accept a diverse group of students - however, the procedures for doing so are much less formal.

Re the illegality thing - perhaps I am thinking of the states. Private venue owners are allowed much more discretion down there than here - for example, golf courses can refuse a woman from entrance simply because she is a woman. Sexism, racism - same deal.

ok so Tiger Woods walks onto a golf course in Alabama and gets ready to tee up

the white trash comes up to him and says "you can't play here, whites only...but don't worry, not even a driver shot away there is another course that you can play on."

Tiger looks surprised and responds: "but I'm Tiger Woods!"

white trash says: "ok, so maybe for you it would be a 9 iron"

This is just an example of an urban legend. This is not true. I learned in a psychology class that when trying to determine if a story is an urban legend, they're are many characteristics to look for. One of the characteristics was when people say they say something like "this happened to a friend of a friend". You never actually know who it happened too but it has a personal touch to it (friend of a friend) that makes it more plausible.

I also agree with TorontoTrance as this is illegal and is subject to the policies of the human rights council and as such would be dealt with accordingly

But then again I'm'not a psychologist so what do I know

I don't think it's fair to accuse the Fluid Nightclub staff of anything without any concrete evidence. Fluid Nightclub has been around for over a decade and they have a very good repor amongst the clubbing industry.

I sincerely doubt that any one of their staff would say such a comment to anyone. And rumours like this, until the rumour is proven to be fact, can damage a clubs reputation.

Turns out that there is more fact to this incident. I was told from a very reliable source last night that this did actually take place.

Therefore a healthy discussion should continue.

also, this guy i know, his friend got denied entrance at Indian Motorcycle because he was wearing a turban(apparently no headgear allowed)..but religious headcover *IS* allowed by the government of canada. I dunno how true this story is cuz I dont know the guy well..but this is what he told me. Its really odd, because there are more than a few indian patrons that always reach IMC
