Smoking ..umm..something Amps....

Just a quick question....

I've been DJing a while now but always wondered..

-if u buy a power amplifier for your DJ setup...how are the connections? (I see the back of the amp and has absolutely NO connections that I'm used to)
-what else do u need do go w/ it?

----------------------------------------------
My setup now is
(2)Technic1200mkII's
into
(1)Vestax 06pro-A
into
(1)Technics Stereo Reciever 100x4
out to
(2) Bose speakers for highs
and
(1) old jensen sub

!My setup right now only involves RCA cables (L/R) as opposed to where the powered amp looks like it uses other types of connections!
----------------------------------------------

Any help is appreciated.....Thanks

depending on how new that receiver is, it may need optical audio plugs.... I'm sure radio shack er some good electronics store has the converter cables.
What do the plugs look like?? got a photo maybe?

most likely balanced XLRs.

most likely as 99%

an example of such a connector.

You can convert these signals to the regulary RCA connectors with a simple wire/adaptor:

Confused So...

so basically the setup would go as follows?...:

2 turntables
to
DJ mixer
out to (via rca converted to XLR to)
powered amp
to
speakers

Is this the basic setup I'm guessing?

Correct.. Remember for long runs u want XLR cables, because they have a 3rd (ground wire) and are a lot less susceptible to interference.. RCA cables are BAD for long runs, anything over 25 feet..
Just go to any music store and ask for microphone cables, they shouldnt cost much more than RCA cables, plus they are better for long runs..
Another point: U want to minimize the distance between your amp and speakers for best sound quality..
I got my XLR cables from www.bluejeanscable.com
here is the link to their XLR cables..

Most Home HiFi amps come with raw terminals, the kind where you just stip the wires back and wrap them around it or put them in a hole (usually marked red and black)

Professional amplifiers tend to have either XLR or Speak-On connectors on them. Speak-On is a 4 wire shielded cable used for long runs or carrying lots of power. Unless you're rigging a PA for a concert hall youre unlikely to need this kind.

XLR as mentioned above, is a 3 pin balanced connector. If you look at the plug (female connecgtor) with the single pin pointing down, pin 1 is the on the right, 2 is on the left, and 3 is the one in the middle at the bottom. When used for a balanced connection, pin 1 is used for the ground, and is usually connected to the shielding. Pin 2 is hot (+ve) and pind 3 is cold (-ve). When looking at the socket (male connector) pin 1 is on the left and 2 is on the right (so that when plugged together the wires match).

THe above info is only useful if your speakers have XLR inputs. Its more likely that they have unbalanced raw terminals (the kind you just stick the bare wire in). To plug these into your amp, get your regular 2-core speaker wire, connect (soulder) the black wire to pin 1 (ground) and the red wire to pin 2 (+ve). you should also connect pins 1 & 3 with soulder.
