Mixmag issues another awesome mix cd (PVD)

This month, Paul van Dyk did a mix that comes free with the latest issue of mixmag. It's really good, lots of new tracks and the progression is great. It starts off with a more downtempo yet uplifting house track called "Understatement" by Aquaculture and picks up the pace with some sweet summer anthems like Nu-NRG - Connective and Mesh - Purple Haze.

Tracklist:

Aquaculture - Understatement
Starchaser feat Steve Edwards - Falling Star (The Awakening mix)
Cultivate - Broken Pieces
Mal Black - Funk System
Wellenrausch - On the Run
Subsunday - So Good
Magenta - Twisted Soul
Fiocco - Afflito
Nu-NRG - Connective
David Forbes - Answers
Mesh - Purple Haze
Malte and Marc de Clarq - No more rain

Also I actually didnt mind the mix Halliwell put together.

Is he mixing Bosh 2?

What do people dislike about it? (For those who didn't like it)

Posted by Endlesswave on Aug-03-2003 22:43:

^^^ my guess is that they'll say it's "too cheezey" like everything else they don't like.

Cheese is such a relative term though. Many people would say that hard house acts like Eddie Halliwell are pure cheese. So it's probably not that. Maybe it's because PVD is a hugely successful dj and in alot of people's eyes that means he's not cool and by no logical conclusion, he sucks!

Not saying that's what Torontotrance and Special K think or said, but alot of people seem to think that about djs like PVD, Tiesto etc...

I agree w you Andrew.

dunno ... seems like everytime someone say something good about PVD, someone comes and says the opposite .... blah

There are a few things that I didnt like with this CD.
For me personally, the CD dramatically goes downhill after the first two tracks. I like the Cultivate tune, but the Max Graham mix SHITS on the original. So now what didnt I like about the rest of the tunes on this mix?!

1) The basslines. The first thing that I notice about any track is the BASSLINE! I like big fat chunky twisted basslines, none of these tracks have either of those. Just simple 'bangin' kick drums powered basslines. *yawn*

2) The tunes are far too overstated for my liking. Like 'hit you over the head ovbious' overstated. Its like the music on this mix was specifically designed for people with the attention span of a small child.

3) All of these tunes seem to use the exact same formula which gets VERY TIRING for me after a few tracks.

bang bang bang *insert hands in the air euro-trance breakdown* bang bang bang

Repeat adnoseum. It would have been nice if he had thrown me a curveball somewhere in that mix. But alas that was not the case.

So basically yea those are things I wasnt feeling with this mix. I dont know if its me that has changed or if PVD has changed but I couldnt for the life of me get into this mix. I still dig some of his livesets that ive grabbed from this year/last but this did absolutely nothing for me. It all just sounded like a generic 'euro-trance' mix that isnt too far off from what one might hear at a club like lets say for example Plastiue or Palazzo.

I M O

Yea thats a little shocking isnt it. Because usually EVERYONE seems to like the EXACT SAME THINGS IN LIFE.

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-04-2003 00:35:

tho i will admit

david forbes - answers is a fucking tune!

and yes the max graham mix shits all over the mix pvd played

also i found it a bit too short at 63 mins

he could have fit 2 more tracks in there.

Posted by Special K on Aug-04-2003 00:38:

Yea that was actually the ONE tune that stood out for me too. But its still not as good as 'Questions'

*thinks back to PVD @ Warehouse in Feb of '01 and PVD @ Guv in October of '01 when he dropped Questions' aaaaaaaaaaaaaa*

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-04-2003 00:40:

i remember that

but i think answers is better.

Completely understandable. I also agree the Max Graham mix is my fav. Hardly use the original although it's ok. (That build up part in the MG mix is sooo good.). Your point however that this sounded like euro trance and comparing the set to music being played at Plastique or Palzzo couldn't be farther from the truth imo. Euro trance is not what is on that cd. Sylver = Euro trance. That is nothing like what's on the cd.

Point well taken. One thing that should hardly be surprising though, is that this is the type of set many trance djs spin, isn't it? Trance anthem after trance anthem. I realize some trance djs are better at creating a mood or a progression, but even listening to old PVD sets it's trance banger after trance banger.

Although I wasn't dissapointed with this PVD mix (it came with a magazine after all). I recently picked up Gatecrasher resident transmission 02 and I would say this is a perfect example of exactly what you described about the PVD mix. I read great reviews about the GC mix but it's just boring despite all the good tracks.
