those unfriendly levels
Hi, Ive been using Fruityloops for a while know and ive been really trying to push out a thick sound, ejusting EQ, Compressing those drum kicks for a fuller sound and adding pan and reverb in an attempt to space out everything out.
Well There I am trying to get a thick sound and the db level are well in red, so I compress the drums. Okay so its still to high, Ill turn the channel down a little, Okay its not in red now but OH look it doesnt sound good anymore yeah.
So I imported over Acids effects units and did the same, its a little better but im not sure fruity is fully compatible with them. The same goes with spacing things out, Ive tried everything, I always blame myself on this kinda stuff till I realise its probally not me. So what program has the best FX units or what FX plug-ins do you seem to get along with cos I cant work in these CONDITIONS!!!!!!
Well, I don't want to make you feel bad, but I do think it's you and not the program's fault. I guess you have to tweak some more to get the results you want, because I know for sure that Fruityloops, if handled correctly, can produce an amazing, phat sound!
Maybe you are using crappy samples. You might find it worth while looking for some better ones.
As far as effects go, I use waves for my mastering and compression effects. The Waves compressor-gate rocks.

But that's not the point heh
Illicit has some point, you probably need to tweak the stuff some more.
Besides compression, you really should consider some mild distortion. Distortion can really add that extra bite to your sound, or even make it warmer...
There are lots of plugins for that, but one that springs to mind is the Predatohm by Ohmforce.
PSP's vintagewarmer is also quite nice... Although it's more a compressor that emulates (quite admirably I must say) the old vintage tube warmers.
