i saw my friends gain their freshman 15. it was not nice. donttt eat too much fast food. go to the store and buy some food (healthy) and cook it yourself. sounds hard now, but in the end it will pay off.

Well you know what to do... eat right, exercise. Do simple things like walking those mile or so distances around campus you might usually drive... dont blame lack of time on not eating right. Buy pita bread, buy bagged salad, buy italian dressing. Stuff pita with salad, smother with dressing, eat. Buy things to snack on like kim chee, V8, fruits (bananas are especially easy), yogurt, bagged salad, packaged deli meats (eat them straight from the bag), ect. ESPECIALLY lay off soft drinks and those super sweet coffee drinks. Just one can of coke alone has like 140 calories, and 32 grams of sugar. Absurd. You probably take in more excess calories thru drinks than anything else. If your after caffene, drink Green Tea. If you really have to, you can make it up with beer funneling later
By the way, you may want to do these things anyways as they may be good for your overall health...
i didnt gain weight until my senior year in college when i quit swimming and working out. but i gained a lot.
you will gain weight because you usually have unlimited food at the dining hall which isnt necesarily healthy and from alcohol. alcohol is the worst thing for you for weight gain. you'll consume a lot of it at school AND some alcohols additionally lower your metabolism (beer). dont believe that if you drink liquor it isnt bad for you. for example, on the weight watchers points system, a beer is 2-3 points and a shot it 2 points, out of about 20 for a day. if you have a heavy drinking night you will be putting on some major calories. you either have to work out like a fiend or really watch what you consume. good luck. if you are lucky the 15 lbs will go mostly to your boobs, then it isnt so bad.

Originally posted by whiskers ugh, i think taking statistics was actually useful... the article doesn't talk about any lurking / confounding variables, such as how many times a day the students eat, how many hours a week they excersice and what their lifestyles are like. plus, the results are really biased because this wasn't a random sample - only cornell students were sampled. and with a sample of 60 people and without a distribution graph i wouldn't trust this survey a lot. plus, what are the actual results of this survey? "all-you-can-eat dining facilities account for 20% of freshman weight gain." what the hell does that mean? that 20% of the 60 freshmen gained weight? or that from the unmentioned number of freshmen who gained weight 20% of the weight gained was due to junk food? and even so, this was just a survey. they didn't isolate a control group of people and provide them with other food so that they could compare results. yes, this survey has reasonable grounds and yes, junk food does make you gain weight, but considering what they say about the way the study was done, i wouldn't trust it and i wouldn't worry about it. after all, not everything about a population applies to individuals. everything also depends on metabolism. my dad and i always eat just a little bit more than "a few more calories a day" and my dad is the skinniest person ever to eat so much and stay that skinny. and i'm not very fat too. and if you have trouble workign out, go hike the appalachian trail, i heard it's a really good work out

Originally posted by butterfly your points on the statistical relevance of the survey are valid but the freshman 15 is a stigma that is pretty well known and doesnt need a survey to prove it exists. drastically increasing your intake of food and alcohol will make you gain weight. that is all there is to it.

Originally posted by whiskers well, fuck me, i can as well gain weight at home the same way. all there is to it is that you change your lifestyle, so it's not like they're stuffing junk food and alcohol down your throat - it's your choice to eat junk food, drink alcholol, and get fat.
I lost 10 pounds freshmen year... too much late night partying + not enough sleep + irregular eating patterns + no excercise = weight loss!
