being a great producer doesnt always necessarily translate into someone being a great dj...

true but James Holden is no master of the decks either but people love to see him spin...
If you go to see the "#1 DJ In the World" and he's screwing up more times than you can count then there's something wrong. personally I'd see G&D for the music...i don't care whether they screw up or whatever (i don't think they could be 'boring' by my standards...i've heard numerous sets by them and non of them have bored me before)

that doesnt mean that hes good...

and by great dj im not talking about just mixing, im talking about ability to read and work a crowd into a frenzy...to some that comes naturally, for others the ability to do that doesnt come at all...!

well u know what??? none of us ahve actually seen/heard G&D live...so until we DO so, lets not assume things

Posted by Special K on Aug-07-2003 01:12:

i wasnt assuming anything nor was i trying to insinuate that they suck or anything like that...just stating what we all know to be true (that being a great producer doesnt always translate into being a great DJ)

if they came to Toronto and played in the right venue i'd definately make an effort to go see them play out...!

Well he is a good friend of mine who writes for a well known local magazine.

Here is his review of John 00 Flemming and G & D

We arrived to see the end of resident Oliver Berge's set - I didn't hear enough to form an opinion of him, but what little I heard, I liked. 2am brought us John '00' Fleming. J'00'F has been around for ages, and is well known for his high energy relentless prog/trance sets, and he didn't disappoint - for 3 hours he aboslutely tore the roof off Arc. I can honestly say I haven't heard anyone play that hard without really venturing into the techno or Picotto territory in a long time, and it was a real treat. I can definitely think of a few members of our regular party crew that would have been in heaven hearing his set. Blinding, driving prog/trance the whole way.

I can't say I'd want to hear it for 8 straight hours, or even every week, but he brought out the big guns and thoroughly entertained (and exhausted) the crowd. Mixing was on-point the whole way and the programming was solid. A definite two thumbs up for J'00'F on this night.

Then came Mr. Dresden, who proceeded to tear down everything that J'00'F had built up. Nobody, least of all me, was expecting him to continue with the pace Fleming had set; but it was the vocal, ohhhhh the vocals, that surprised me. I have never heard so many vocals in one set in my life. From the first track to the last, I think there weren't more than a handful of tracks that weren't vocal. On top of this, he played what was probably 95% cds; I certainly don't have a problem with heavy use of the Pioneers in someone's set (in fact I'm a believer that it's definitely the future), but at least turn the turntables on and humour us with a bit of vinyl - that's what a lot of people come to see. Even worse was the number of trainwrecks. I'm admittedly a stickler for good mixing when I'm paying to see someone spin - but even someone who doesn't really care would have to admit that Dresden's technical skills were downright atrocious on this night. It was honestly about the worst-programmed and worst-mixed set I've heard in recent memory.

Take it or leave but this guy knows his shit. No doubt if you are a fan of these guys then you will enjoy regardless....

Posted by DigiNut on Aug-07-2003 01:20:

^ perhaps this is why he hasn't been booked?

I for one love their productions and really enjoyed the set that was up for download on the TA mix page, but that's about all I've heard from them.

I dunno about "the people" but I wasn't really impressed by Holden's DJing abilities that one time I saw him... so I'll go with NO, I wouldn't love to see Holden spin again (at least for a couple of years now until he gets his shit straight)...
