External Harddrive
Finally, I am going to make myself purchase an external harddrive. I cant stand my 4 gig harddrive any longer! I have about $200-250 to spend. I'm thinking about getting a big external harddrive. I HATE BEST BUY, because EVERYTHING they have ever sold me has broke (Playstation 2, 2 cd burners, about 4 or 5 modems
) any suggestions as to where I can get a good deal or what the best brands are? Any help is appreciated.

external HDs are slow, expensive, and they get ruined alot.....

hmmm. i would get an external bt then i have a laptop. so its a whole diff story.

its a hat trick to remove an internal drive. They are a bit fragile though so in transportation you might wnat to keep them protected :-) I got 126 gigs of HD space on my network 46 coming from three drives (on this machine) and 80 coming from one (on the new machine I built). I only paid for two of them
I've been meaning to get an external too, because I have a laptop that only have 5 gigs of space...AHHH!!!!
The reason I was considering getting an external, is because I dont have any open slots for my pc, so I am going to have to back up everything onto cd's first, then reinstall windows and all my programs. If I have an external, I can use ghost and make everything the same as it is on my old drive, but I suppose I really should go with the internal so when i get a new pc it will have lots of space
you could just have the harddrive "resting" inside the pc case, ghost the old drive to the new, remove old drive and put new one in its place.
exernal drives are only usefull if you need to more "large" amounts of data from one place to another, personally i just use cd's as they are a) cheaper b) easier to transport and c) if i drop them the cd may shater and i lose the data, drop a harddrive, external or internal, and you risk damaging it (the heads that read the data) and losing all the data on the drive

the only problem with upgrading internal hardrives, is that your whole system needs to be compatible with such a big hardrive, meaning, heaving to upgrade Ram, Procecors and such in order to make it work, so If I were you Id just buy a new PC, those with the 400 dollar deals that have 60 gigs.. or buy the external if you dont want to upgrade all the other things I mentioned.

If you already have $200 or so to spend, save up a little more and buy yourself a new computer... If your computer only has a 4gb hard drive that probably means everything else in your computer will need to be upgraded too... Save up another $300 and go buy a cheap Dell or HP or sumthing... It will be a much better investment that another hard drive for the ancient computer you have....

Amdk-6 333mhz ,160megs of pc100 ram, 4mb integrated vidmem, 4 gig HD, windows 2000 pro,. that deal posted before is a VERY good deal i think. maybe i should just save up for a new pc though. Although, if i get the external, when i move, i will be able to take ALL my info with me. (because tthe computer I am using is not mine ) but, thanks for all the info ppl! I may just order that 160 gig external. 230$ is pretty cheap for an external of that quality, so i think that is just what i may do.

I heard that if I completely remove my HDD, and swap a new one in its place, set it as primary, then install OS, it will be ok for me to ghost onto new HDD from old HDD, then I can keep old 4 gig (if i want to) as slave and even if I had a 160 gig internal, it should be ok as long as it's set to primary because the motherboard will adapt.
Can you confirm or deny these accusations! 
yeah it would be possible to do the ghost process you said.
I do doubt if your system will support drives up to 160 gig though, use http://www.hwinfo.com/ to identify your motherboard and then list it here, and we can check for you, some older motherboards harddrive controllers can not use drives over certain sizes.
