California and elections

You, americans, what do you think about candidats of elections in california ???

-Terminator (A. Schwarzenegger)
-Porno man (Larry Flint)
-Porno woman (unknown female porno star)
-Ahahahahah (the actor of arnold and willy)

I think that's for you it's normal, but for me... I don't understand why peoples (like cinema actors) want to be a politician. Political system is serious ! In France, it's impossible to have an actor to be governor. I don't see Jean Reno be a deputy or senator.

Finally (personal). If I was American, I think that I vote for Schwarzenegger. I like him ! Now, in France, we call him "Gouvernator" !!

quote:

god i hope he doesnt win. his stunt on leno was smart, and will probaly get all the sheep to vote for him. arnold doesnt even manage his own money, so how will he help out? i laffed when he says his a people's person... not everyone in california is a famous star and rich. what bothers me is, why would republicains even back him up, his wife is a kennedy, and theres a rumor he was a male/female escort in poland?! maybe its cause his father was a nazi and his millionaire.

anyway why is the "liberal" media pumping arnold for gov? didnt the media say awhile back that hollywood had no business in politics. remember what happen to tim robbins and janeane garofalo. i guess republician stars are an execption...

Posted by rizo on Aug-08-2003 05:18:

wow i love that pic. darrell issa spends 1.7 million of his own money to start the recall against davis. he decides to run after the recall is offical, today he backed out, probaly because of arnold now running, while crying like a little bitch on tv.

I never said it was the only reason for the collapse ... like most momentous events a large number of factors are obviously going to be at play. If you want to debate all the reasons for the collapse I would start a new thread

quote:

Factors in the Soviet collapse include military, economic, and political dimensions, and can be grouped into long-term and proximate causes. In reality, despite the vituperation of some of their exchanges, Sovietologists do not substantially disagree about the factual record of what happened. The disagreement lies in the relative weight placed on them in explaining the Soviet collapse, particularly when it comes to the personal role of the top leadership. Historically, most empires collapse due to defeat in war, and the Soviet Union was no exception. Its troops were defeated on the ground in Afghanistan (withdrawing in 1989), but more seriously its military-industrial complex was defeated in the Cold War arms race. The Star Wars program, begun as a "scam" to bring the Soviets to the negotiating table, worked even better than expected, since Ronald Reagan sincerely believed it might work. The Soviet military knew that their economy could not afford to create a new generation of weapons, and opted for compromise-paving the way for arms reductions and, more importantly, eventual withdrawal from Eastern Europe. The fact that the military had already given up on winning the Cold War meant that they did not go to the mat to maintain the Soviet hold over the East that no longer had strategic value.

Nobody denies that Star Wars gave the Soviet leaders a fright and helped tip the balance in favor of reform. The disagreement comes when one raises some counter-issues. For example: could Gorbachev's conservative rivals in the Politburo have negotiated military downsizing without triggering the Soviet collapse?

Nice quote, BUT the fact is that al quaida did more to stop the cold war than reagan did. Reagan had just pure luck to be in the right place at the right time!
