Why do DJs hate trance so?

Any party or club I go to (and they're always playing house), if I ask the DJ if he spins trance, I usually get a dirty look or the bird or simliar I can't stand Madison Avenue or Paul Johnson or any of that pap (don't flame!)... is there some kind of house/trance divide?

Sorry for asking such a n00b question...

Dude, Where do you live? Here in Miami, Fl everyone is a house head basically.. Prog and trance are around but not in the masses like other places.....

Welcome aboard Dude..

must go to shitty clubs eh?

Posted by djway on Aug-08-2003 05:54:

Different clubs/nights have a different music policy, so the DJ's wouldn't play it, as that's not what you go to those clubs to hear.

Musically the way the tracks are made, it's not easy for a DJ to like both, due to the elements in the track.

DJ's don't like being told to play something different.....really, who likes being told they are doing a bad job, and would you really want to go to a requests kind of club?

Look around you'll find a trance club out there, somewhere, it takes me an hour to get the clubs that play trance, but shit it's worth it, no more RnB!!!

ffs some people like to blame bad shit on everyone else... I think some dj's are just really genre sensitive plus wot the feck, it's there set, what place do you have tellin um what to play...

Posted by suhkorea on Aug-08-2003 06:43:

I donno... but house sucks..
hard progressive trance. is tha shit

either that or hiphop

Posted by kr00t0n on Aug-08-2003 06:47:

You'll also prolly find that his view on trance is dj sammy and shyte

Posted by armandzadza on Aug-08-2003 12:11:

I don't think there is a grand trance/house divide. In fact, most people I know enjoy both genres. E.g., I would consider Andain - Beautiful Things (G&D Unplugged Mix) progressive house, and people on this board go nuts over the track.

If the DJ was spinning deep house the whole night, an uplifting trance track would be out of place. Think of it from the DJ's prospective: you've put a lot of thought into your set, got the crowd going, and then some guy comes with a track request that does not fit...

On the other hand, there might be places in the set where you can have a transition from house to progressive trance. E.g., Tomaz vs. Filterheadz - Sunshine (Carl Cox Remix) mixes well into Dave Gahan - Dirty Sticky Floors (Junkie XL Dub). So just watch out for the trance tracks that might fit and suggest them to the DJ (without being pushy about it).

If you dont like the music at a club then go to a club that plays the music you do like... geez

But honestly, trance and house just dont mix, and i have to say i am appalled at the trend in the UK where clubs like godskitchen or sundissential have a second room for funky house. Fuck that shit, we dont want those pretentious wankers in our clubs....

but the bottom line is those pretentious wankers represent more dollars to the average club owner because theyre more likely to shell out more money on drinks than drugs fucked clubbers, who buy one water bottle at the start of the night and thats it.... sad fact of life but house music is here to stay :/

Posted by montie on Aug-08-2003 15:30:

you just are going to the wrong clubs buddy.
and also teh DJ's prolly get pissed off because they don't like being told what to play. I hate it when people come up and request songs and what not. its annoying. (but sometimes that person taht comes up has some really good suggestions).
anyway,

also alot of DJ's and people for that matter as you can see in just some of the replys to this post are very pretensious about their music. they like to stick to one genre adn not go anywhere else. they think cuz they like house (be it deep, funky, or progressive) everything else may suck, especially that cheezy trance music like dj sammy and ian van dahl. or maybe they have heard good trance and they think its boring or whatever. i know a couple of peeps that spin house and just hate trance cuz they are ignorant to how to enjoy it.

i think the best DJ's know how to enjoy everytype of music and know how to mix the right elements together in a perfectly eclectical way.

Posted by ASOT100 on Aug-08-2003 15:38:

maybe cuz older ppl (a large amount of the ppl who attend clubs) like dancing to house music over trance. Why do they like house more than trance? beats me, maybe they're too old to grasp trance

Posted by arj1o1 on Aug-08-2003 15:39:

dutch dj's don't care to play trance.. hehe
some time ago i asked johan gielen if he would play as the rush comes in his set and he opened his set with it especially for me

Posted by muzak on Aug-08-2003 16:43:

house is easier to dance to, which is what clubs are all about in the first place... dancing. in trance theres generally a lot of jumping up and down. over and over. or at least until the next breakdown

Posted by mto on Aug-08-2003 19:08:

Because of Armin van Buuren! :P

But no, I think muzak is somewhat right. Also because progressive is better.

Posted by RavenStar on Aug-08-2003 19:32:

Ha, you should try Detroit...this city has quite a "F**K TRANCE" attitude!

House is easier to dance to, I find myself dancing a lot more when house is playing. I HATE those trance breakdowns/buildups on the dance floor...annoying as hell. Deep and dark prog house is my favorite tho, stuff really gets me dancing!

Posted by Cobalt on Aug-08-2003 19:41:

As far as I can tell for California, most DJs don't have anything against trance. They just think it's too "floofy" for dancefloor play.

But someone is going to try and change that soon.

Posted by kr00t0n on Aug-08-2003 20:11:

I still dont get the hatred ppl seem to have for other genres

I love a funky nite out every now and again, variety is the spice of life, and some change makes me appreciate my trance more

Posted by LordCrimson on Aug-08-2003 20:17:

a club owner/promoter/DJ here had also said he didn't like 'fluffy' trance either. I'm still trying to figure out what he's talking about

He has a valid question...but the question resides with top flight deejays rather than shit clubs

2001 in ministry (RIP shit mag)....dave seaman proceeded to make fun of trance....but my question was...why...it made him who he is.

IMO..prog deejays still play trance...they just don't call it that or admit it. I mean john digweed has age of love - age of love in his box all the time...and it's trance. Sander K plays trance...so does lots of other deejays

I find deejays just bash trance for fun...like timo maas did with his Fuck trance record....then again...he says he was stoned...timo plays trance...and still does...just not as evident.
