-- Question for the DJs
Question for the DJs
for those that play out
when mixing do you like to do it sober, a couple drinks or drunk
personally i like to have a few, smoke a joint and take to the decks... either drinking or smoking or both the whole time
I don't like the idea of mixing drunk, it's a fact that you will have less controll over what's happening while youre mixing...you won't hear the result of your EQ'ing and so on...really bad idea imo
I chose sober, only because if i drink, then it impairs my ability to focus, since I dont drink much or often to begin with.
I would never smoke and play, cause I would perform very, very bad...
Though there are those ppl that do better while intoxicated or on drugs... Usually, those ppl are used to being in that state of intoxication, therefore control themselves better.
However, some ppl just take one beer or one shot just to calm them down. But im a chain drinker, once i start, i want to keep going, so id rather keep my jitters before playing and just do what i have to do.
I don't drink
I don't smoke
I don't drugs
I don't sex
Ever... not in normal life, not in party life, not behind the decks.
I like to have a few. I usually get free drinks when I spin, so by the end of the night I'm usually feelin pretty good. I find I loosen up a lot more when I drink and I'm more comfortable to crank the knobs or throw in a backspin here and there. When I get into the music, the crowd gets into the music and I have a much better response.
I find mixing on a single pill to be great, lets me feel the music a bit better, but I dont like it on booze, I either lose reflexes which hampers coorection speeds, or, if I am quite drunk, think I am doing well, when its actually a pile of wank
Sober is best for me tho
I like to have a beer or two, just to calm the nerves. I've only played "out" a few times, and even those were pretty small. But my hands shake whenever there are more than like 5 people listening, especially if i know they are the critical listener type, like other DJs.
A few beers stops the hands shaking, and doesn't impede my mixing. I tried it on E once, i was LOVING it, but i couldn't mix very well, my head was all scattered. Stoned i only tried once, i did OK, but i felt like i was barely pulling them off.
for crowds or friends I'm sober, when I mix alone sometimes I drink some beer, but never that much..cant really focus when I drank a few , then I'm buzy with other things instead of the records
I saw Brandon Block once... that was a lesson in many things, but above all never get wankered whilst spinning. You will only make yourself seem like a cock.
Will usualy get nutted after, depending on which set I play.

i say depends because it depends on the circumstances and how many people i may be playing for...
house parties are definitly a HAMMERED situation. hehe
Stoned is a lot of fun, but what I find happens is that you spend so long admiring your mix that you don't remember to get the next track ready, so when you suddenly realise there's 0:59 to go it's a bit of a rush to get the next track ready. Also I find matching beats to be a lot harder. A lot more fun, but a lot harder
I find the best thing to do is to mix sober, be relaxed whatever way you can, then do your chemical enhancement and admire the finished product.

i tryed spinning when drunk once, not to bad. it loosened me up a bit, but if i fucked up i wouldnt really care so i dont think il want to do this alot. i also tryed mixin when stoned, and i was awsum, taped it and played it back when i wasnt stoned and didnt think it was me mixing. so i love mixing when stoned, but if i did it in front of people i might get paranoid and fuck up. dont know. but on my own it was quality
I dont smoke or do hard drugs.
Music is my drug
But seriously when i do drink music sounds so much better, i like getting a little buzzed when i mix, it atcually helps me beatmatch farely well. But i dont advise being trashed while mixing.
i've been hanging out with a bunch of dnb and jungle kids here in alabama (im tryin to hold the trance fort hehe),anyway my friends boyfriend spins dnb and i don't know how he does it, but he will drink like theres no tomorrow. i watched my friend kinda hold him steady while he was at the tables because he was just completely trashed.. but he was flawless, it was amazing! and it was on a pair of gemini's!
i've never played out, in front of 5 friends is the most, but while in my house i like to spin after a good joint. Put a record on, sit down, 'trance out', then mix in another one at the end and keep them going. Nothing fancy, you know. Its really soothing. And i've fallen asleep before, only to wake up to the repeating pops at the end of the record.
I only have a few drinks with friends before i play, with about 30mins before my set i drink water /red bull.
I have been drunk on stage before and i didnt enojoy my set as much as being sober, so i never get drunk before i play.
BONZAI FOREVER......
hmmm, it depends....
I never actually intend to get drunk
Normally, I stay sober before my gig, maybe have a few beers.
So when I do a 1,5 hour set, there 's no time to get drunk (well, technically it would be possible, but I would have to spend more time drinking then mixing
)
But sometimes when I do very long sets (like september 4, I'll be spinning from 22.00 - 5.00 back-to-back with someone else) I often end up pretty wasted....specially when people keep bringing me drinks, worrying I won't have enough
I tend to 'forget to drink' whilst spinning. So after a while, there will be a couple of beers waiting for me and I'll slam one down (or two, or three, or....
)
I've noticed that, although I'm drinking quite a lot, I'll stay relatively sober during these long sets (concentration probably), but that it will really kick in after I've stopped spinning
i can mix pretty damn well when i'm completely piss-ass drunk. But i prefer to just have a couple. This way i'm more relaxed and not so jumpy when i mess up the beat matching. I can correct easier and way faster if i'm mellow.
i've not tried mixing with a little ganja, but i doubt it'd be too different

Well, i tryed once to spin while i'm drunk.
I never do it agian..
It was realy a HELL.
actually what i find that helps me conscentrate big time is caffeine.
i love popping some excedrine or having some coffee before i mix. my mind focuses very easily.
i like to have a drink while i am mixing. it does loosen me up and helps me the feel the music (caffiene also helps me feel it too, in a different way tho). i hate mixing trashed because i totaly over compesnate for stuff and just act all crazy.
same thing while stoned. pot and i don't seem to get along too well.
i love listening ot the music high. and i can see things in the music much more clearly, but i jsut don't seem to care about anything else, except what i'm taking in through my ears. i just don't have enough experience with it yet to use pot to its full advantage while spinning yet.
I can take few beers and mix as good as allways. Maybe even better.
