commercial

this thread has discussed commercial.. but what about this.. the PVD motorola commercial aired last night on MTV during spiderman (spiderman by the way has the entire soundtrack mixed by digweed, and the theme song for it is bedrock)

how do you guys feel about that?

Posted by Victor Dinaire on Aug-18-2003 23:56:

i think its great and we need it bad cos the way its looking, the EDM scene is in trouble. we need new people to embrace this culture.

there's nothing wrong with spreading it to the masses. its when u compromise your tastes for the gain of money that makes it bad.

nobody was born into this world as a person who loves trance or any other form of edm. all of us were exposed to it for the first time at one point or another.

think about it. we all heard about this somehow, we need as many people to experience it like we have. i hope i see more of it happening.....

No one will even know its PvD... Yeah I am not thrilled with it, but whatever, PvD still brings quality... I mean shit he could have turned into Oakenfold, but he hasn't... As for Digweed... he is a God... he can do no wrong... No but seriously, soundtracks are cool, going commercial to an extent is ok as long as you keep your musical integrity... PvD has done so IMO. and so has Diggers...

Posted by Enervate on Aug-19-2003 01:32:

well i think they showed the spot during spiderman cause i feel like it has a crossmarketing appeal.. i agree, no one will even recognize him, but i think its a ballzy move on cingulars part, and you can bet that hes gonna play the shit out of connective here.

has anyone else seen "the rules of attraction," and if so, did you catch the quick mention of oakenfold in victor's superfast monologue of europe?

if you're wondering why in sam hell i brought this up, i'm drawing a weak connection to edm making its way into pop culture.

Posted by Highmay on Aug-19-2003 15:14:

seriously folks: can you really imagine PvD with some bikini-clad blond bimbos to his sides haucking miller lite with his german accent??

PvD oozes class...and he knows exactly what he's doing...the scene needs help, so what better way can he help the scene but to bring the music to the masses...

what i particularly dont agree with is running the commercial non-stop on MTV of all places...the collective IQ of that age group isnt the highest...i love to see it marketed towards the older 20's/early 30's age group....but whatever...

Posted by Aya Brea on Aug-19-2003 20:12:

yes i saw it, and was very happy to see it too. i didn't think they were going to play his commercial in the US. i hope it gets played more, though. i completely agree with what victor said.

btw spiderman fucking rox, one of my favorite shows right now.

And yadda yadda yadda about them making the BIG money now with these endorsements....as what cost?...the cost of the scene?...i have said it before and i will say it again...THE MASSESS WILL EMBRACE THEN RUIN THE SCENE AFTER THE FAD IS OVER...they always do.

sorry man i disagree with you 1000%

record labels are shutting down

superclubs are shutting down

edm magazines - going bust

promoters are doing much less parties than before

artists bookings dropped over 60%

people who had secure employment in this industry are now losing their jobs. i lost my job too! i used to work at Logic Records until they went belly up.

people arent clubbing as much anymore, alot of the die-hard fans are becoming jaded and are now over it. most people who bought music and supported are now downloading.

this entire industry needs a surge of new energy and we need a new wave of followers to join whoever's left.

were you born into this lifestyle? nope, neither was i.

on a side note, i garantee it you would JUMP on the opportunity to do a Motorola commercial so please stop fronting my friend.

Damn dude your more jaded than I am! Especially for someone who has Tiesto in his avatar!

I look at it like this. Is the artists commercial success causing a worsening of his music?

Oakenfold - yes
PvD - no
Diggers - HHHHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZ fuckin NO!
Tiesto - maybe, yes and no.

While I have the same worries you have, one can only wonder how it will go. EDM is very unique in both the format in which its made and the format in which it is brought to the public. So while it is possible that EDM could really hit the crapper musically, there is also a chance it won't. History can be an indicator with other genre's, but since EDM is so different, who knows.

Yes I know that in Europe some Dj's are getting a bit absurd, but with the downturn in the scene (as Vic. said) those guys could get weeded out. I guess we can argue semantics all day, but I am not sure this commercial is a negative sign of things to come.

Not jaded...i know Tiesto is the number 1 sellout right now.

Diggers sold out in the 90's when he played New Years Eve for fucking MTV....sorry but the minute your on American MTV your a joke...plain and SIMPLE!!!!

That is ridiculously narrow-minded...

Do you just ignore everything else he does?

Anyways, I won't flame, and you are jaded, but so am I so its cool.

EDM Magazines?...who cares....only people who read those are the people who don't go out and dont know the scene....case in point look at the readers of DJ Mag...that list every year is a JOKE...wasnt Armin 2 years ago at #57?????///....LOL....

Right SMALL record labels are shutting down while the others are being picked up by corporate mongrals..only to rape and pillage the music....

Superclubs shutting down?...where...in NYC?...Twilo shut down more then 2 years ago...get over it....besides NASA parties where better then Twilo anyway...but your probally too young to remeber those.

Artists bookings dropped?....like who's?

The reason people are clubbing as much anymore is because the scene is too mainstream...anyone and everyone ventures into the clubs now...where in 1991-1997 the majority of these people would be denied at the doors of NYC clubs....

All these juice head, bridge and tunnel, candy, E popping, wannabe real NYC club kids because they saw Michael Alig on the E! channel are fucking up the scene for the die-hards...yet making it more profitable then it ever has been....

People who bought music are now downloading it?...that has been the case for many many years now my friend...WAKE UP it's the 21st century....

Was i "BORN" into this lifestyle?...not per se....but i have been listening to this music since 1984 and have NEVER left...so maybe there was a few years after i was born before i got into...but i can pretty much say i have been in it my whole life....i was in NASA and going to Robot parties in NYC when half these kids in clubs now where in diapers....we don't need the new followers liek you say...they are the ones fucking it up...are you that blind?...look at the QUALITY of trance/tech/prog/house etc etc to a few years back...are you kidding me?..you think it is better now?...it is NOT because it is too mainstream...not good for us but GREAT for the money hungry bitches.

Would i JUMP to do a motorolla commercial?....i don't know...it depends whats at stake...my pride? my dignity? at that cost then the answer would be absolutley NOT....money isnt everything my friend...as you get older you will realize that....so to answer your question honestly i would not of done it like PVD did and i would not of did shit with Coke like Tiesto did...i guess my morals and trueness to the scene means more to me then say 50 thousand or whatever they both got for the endorsements....but hey thats me.

you are so off in many ways its funny

first off, i am much MORE EXPERIENCED in this INDUSTRY THEN YOU THINK

Michael Alig? I WORKED IN THE OFFICE NEXT TO HIM FOR 2 YEARS! i bet you didnt know that.

Robots? I went when JONATHAN PETERS used to play there.
i was a part of that whole era your talking about. i participating in making it happen.

i remember when paul van dyk played at palladium back in 1995

or better yet, when pvd was a tiny name on the flyer for alan sancuary's heaven party that he called the cops on. remember that? new years eve 1994??

please do yourself a favor and dont underestimate other people

also, pvd didnt comprimise at all for doign the commercial. i hope he does more.

and by the way, im 28 too
