End Of Trance ???

To tell u the truth i feel that trance is in a big decline in the last few months, all the DJS playing the good old melody trance ( TIJS, ARMIN, FERRY ) are playing more and more techno / HardStyle etc ....
Lets start with me who personally prefered the old tiesto and to be honest i don't realy like " the moving forward attitude " ... whats wrong with uplifting melody trance that tiesto used to play , that is what brought him to the number 1 spot.
"The Moving Forward Attitude " towards the genres of techno, hardstyle etc .... isnt realy new and many djs in the world play HARDSTYLE , Mauro, Carl Cox , Sven Vath etc...... its hard to find the uplfting DJs nowadays and the only two who still appreciates trance the most is with no doubt PAUL VAN DYK and ARMIN who is my favorite DJ right now ( although he to is playing some techno in his sets but not like tiesto )
Techno has always been there with many djs playing it i realy hope that armin or tiesto wont become techno djs because then for sure trance will die and i guess you all dont want that to happen !
Although i must say that tiesto's set at SPACE 34 MIAMI was one of the best i have ever heard from hin, it reflected the true tiesto style which brought him to the number 1 spot, unfortunatley he doesnt play many good sets as he used to and that is quite a shame !

Uplifting Trance / Vocal Trance / Melodies FOREVER ! that is the best music hearing in a party, takes you on a journey and brings u to EUPHORIA ! And that is what trance is all about. In techno u do not have the euphoric feeling or the big smile on your face !

Think about it, i guess most of u mostly like the true trance ( no wonder u r here and not in a techno site ) . If Armin, Tijs, Ferry stop playing gradually trance it will eventually die because these 3 DJS are probably 3 of the 4 (PVD the extra one ) founders of Trance and the these djs are the ones who used to bring u to Euphoria by playing their beautiful sets.
I am realy afraid that it is going to end soon enough.
Techno can be heard by many DJS but djs playing melody trance is realy hard to find :/

Would like to hear your opinions on this subject

Cheers

ok 1. Sven Vath, Mauro Picotto and Carl Cox play something called TECHNO, not Hardstyle (Thank god).. Hardstyle is Lady Dana, Luna, Super Marco May. Download some of that and you will no the difference....
2. Things change, music changes... How much great trance is still being produced? Yes, of course there is some, but not nearly as much as 5 years ago, or 3... Of course there is still trance being produced but much less, the dj's would all get the same sound if they only play trance...

Music always changes with the years... Look at the different styles of music that have been popular... even in the dance scene there's a different hype every few years... it's just the way things are....
So yes, I think it's a shame too, but you just have to accept it...

People in the 80's probably thought the same when disco died... it's just a natural course in the evolution of music

I think there is still a big majority of PPL wanting to hear Real Trance Music, i realy dont think it has been overdone.
Techno is a certain type of music while trance is another type of music which fits other PPL. That is why i think it is good that there is a big variety of djs playing different kinds of Electronic Music - By this every clubber will have is 2-3 Favorite Djs playing his prefered style.
I for instance , am a true Melody Trance Lover and that is why my 2 favories at the moment are ARMIN and PVD who bring me to euphoria in their sets ! Tiesto used to be my favorite but his new music style doesnt suit me and i guess many others ! The problem is that tiesto's new sound isnt so unique , there are many djs playing his type of music.
I dont think that trance should die, there are so many beautiful new productions in the trance field NYANA CD 2 , 76 and these compilations are different a bit from the 99 Trance, today the new productions have more emphasis on Vocals which is great IMO.
I realy dont think that trance has been overdone, almost every new trance production is great.

The most Important thing that i want to emphasis is that there is a big variety of DJS playing different styles, but realy not a big variety playing PURE TRANCE ! if everyone would play techno - hardstyle that would be very boring ! :q

i for one love the new direction djs like tiesto are going.
mixing the progressive with trance, techno with trance, hard driving trance (i.e traffic) with uplifting trance.

Guess i just like a wide variety of music and like to hear someone mix them seamlessly together (of course seamless is subjective here).

But i will always love a good uplifting set with great melodies, just now i prefer a bit more energy in them. PvD mixmag mix is a great example of this.

If you want uplifting trance, you gotta look away from the big names and more to the up n comings out there.

There are some quality djs who arent all super-established like tiesto and co, they just arent as well known coz they dont produce

I fully agree with your sentiment. Im a die hard trance fan, and i have been dismayed over the course of this year to see this somewhat mystical trend for big name trance djs to all of a sudden start playing techno. I was love from above this year, with tiesto and pvd. Tiesto's set was 80% techno or tech house, with the ocassional trance track thrown in. I left before paul's 5 hour set but im told it was much the same. I tagged along behind the Radio1 truck for alot of the loveparade, with people like fergie, pvd, jules, etc playing, again i expected a trancier day but everyone on the truck played techno all day. I dont get it, its like there was a union meeting for trance dj's and they all decided to start playing techno. Sure people change their style, but all the big name trance dj's deciding to make a migration to techno in the last 12 months? fucked up if yo ask me

I dont mind techno, but if i wanted to hear techno id go to a richie hawtin or dj rush gig. With people like pvd and tiesto on the lineup i expected a big trance night, and I think the majority of people who see those names would too. If a DJ wants to change his style thats their perogative but it shits me when i buy a ticket promoted as a trance event and the headlines play something else. It also shits me that they cant make up their mind. Armin, Tiesto, PVD, half the time you see them they play techno, the other half trance. Its a pain in the ass because you never know what youre going to get until they come on stage, by which stage youve already wasted your money on the ticket. Fergie at least seems have gone fully over to the techno camp, but for some reason godskitchen still put him in the main tent at global which was predominatly trance, and he completely fucked up the atmosphere.

At the end of the day theres not much you can do. If all the big trance DJs become techno dj's then others will rise to take their place, i just wish they would stop trying to sell their new style with their reputatins gained for trance.

I think there's still plenty of good melodic trance around, just because Tiesto isn't playing it doesn't mean trance is gonna die

ATRC is more progressive.. that's the sound the guy "doesn't" want.. As for "proper" trance being dead, I call bullshit. The genre is just more fragmented than it used to be (although some will argue prog trance isn't really a "subgenre" of trance, and to their merit they are technically right). I don't really consider PVD's sets to be "technoish" if you ask me.. i've been listening to some of his recent ones (energy 2003 actually ^^) and urr..

01. Digital Pressure - Aftershokk
02. Terry Bones vs Fred Baker - Introspection (John Askew Remix)
03. Paul van Dyk vs Second Sun - Crush (Vandit Dub) OMFG ownage
04. Modulation - Spirits (Cosmicman Remix)
05. Three Drives - Carrera 2 (Nu-NRG Remix)
06. Paul van Dyk ft. Vega 4 - Time Of Our Lives (Club Mix)
07. David Forbes - Answers
08. Rafferty & Kershaw - We Are Connected (Marcos pres. Sunfire Remix)
09. Paul van Dyk - Reflections
10. Solo Plastic - Get Down
11. Paul van Dyk vs Marco V - For A Revolt (Bootleg)
12. Jonesey - Independance (Stadium Mix)
13. Ron van den Beuken - Timeless (Ron van den Beuken Remix)
14. Rhythm Gangstar - The Crowd Song (Paul van Dyk Rework)
15. Underworld - Born Slippy (Paul van Dyk Remix)
16. Paul van Dyk - Nothing But You (Original Mix)
17. Paul van Dyk - Connected (Original Mix)

that tracklist doesn't look very techno to me.. call me insane if you will, but i think the migration is being exaggerated a bit.. armin still plays his ASOT radio shows aswell, which feature mostly, you guessed it, trance (last set i heard from him had plenty of trance anthems in it aswell). Tiesto seems to be the only one that is really turning tech-trance... which i don't enjoy very much

Posted by feri on Aug-22-2003 06:33:

Well, i think even PVD sets are not true trance, sometimes he mixes techo, house (!) songs, etc. PVD is far from the "top TRANCE dj" what he was some years ago. Armin and Tijs are trying to use some prog songs in set, but i dont it is bad, just make the sets are more enjoyable. If they want to make a banging set, why is it a bad idea to play some techno if it is fits for the style of the set ?

IMHO everyone need to decide what he/she like :

1. You like your fav dj, because he makes trance sets. Dont like the sets of your favourite dj ? Try to find other DJs, who can mix some true trance sets

2. You like your fav dj, because you like his mixing, track selection, etc. In this case everything is fine, you dont need to find other dj sets to listen.

If we talk about ture trance set, think about the Above & Beyond, Lange, Ronski Speed sets. If we delete their own produced/mixed songs from their set what we will get : the same 20-30 actual popular trance song. It is boring, the same songs, the same sets.

Posted by IpLaYWiTLiGhTs on Aug-22-2003 06:56:

How can it be the end of trance when 2003 has been an amazing fucking year? We still have half a year to go, so it might even surpass '99 (doubt it though)

As for the sound of trance, people say "trance hasn't evolved", well excuuuuuse me. Take a look at the uplifting days of '99, and compare it to a typical track in 2003. I've noticed it's getting deeper, darker. I have no problem with this.

Posted by nrjizer on Aug-22-2003 07:10:

Haha... I find it funny that people are only now talking about the "end of trance," when trance has been dead for quite a while, when people began to only play huge, cheesy anthems and all of that hard trance shit started to make its way in. These days youd be hard pressed to find GOOD trance... but its out there. John 00 Fleming, D:Fuse, PvD (on his more private club sets where he lets out all sorts of crazy genres, unfortunately he doesnt usually play like he used to), Sandra Collins (From the little I've heard of her), Lemon 8, James Holden, Markus Schulz (from the little ive heard of him...). Armin is really the only big name that has kept my ear most of these years, tho I still prefer when he was playing it deeper with that extra edge. Oh well. I still enjoy some wild, over the top anthems from time to time, though usually in moderation, because it gets stale, fast for me.

And although im not a huge Tiesto fan (though his innercity 98 set is one of my all time favorites), I have great respect for the moves hes taking, especially with such an established fan base built on his classic sound. There will always be hundreds or thousands of bedroom DJ's who can mix perfectly fine that probably idolize Tjis, and will be playing his hits for years to come, so its not like this music will never again breach human ears. It takes balls to venture into new territories when you find it necessary to, especially when it means leaving behind a lot of those fans who made you who you are. So props Tiesto and ALL DJ's who try something new.

Posted by Roy123 on Aug-22-2003 11:48:

I actually like a lot the Progressive tunes such as
AS THE RUSH COMES
NOTHING ( 93 RETURNING REMIX )
XPANDER ( DONT KNOW THE NAME OF THE NEW REMIX )
ETC.......

I think that these are great tunes and i realy love all the vocal trance ( Progy vocals ) going on around lately especially all the Gabriel and Dresden Remixes and Productions.

I think it is great that DJS start of with this style of music, however, lately The well known DJS of trance are playing quite crappy tunes which realy do not fit the genre of Trance / Prog tracks like : Traffic , Lets get Ill etc.... I think that these tracks are more for techno DJS and should not be played by Djs like Armin , Tijs, Marco V etc....

My opinion is that the trance Djs should stick to their Progy Trance and Trance music because for people like me who love Trance and hate Techno/Hardstyle its quite dissapointing going to a party where a trance dj is playing and finding out that his music style has changed completely!
If i liked techno i would go to a carl cox party, i dont think i should hear BOOM BOOM BOOM all the time when what i want to hear is pure Prog or Trance Music !

Cheers
