The jewish vote -- Democratic or Republican?
Do Jews in America vote Democratic or Republican?
I know that historically the vote has been predominantly Democrat but in recent history a lot of Jews have moved closer to the Bush/conservative block, like some of the people I know. Also a lot of Jews identify with the more right-wing approach favored by neo-conservatives, FOX, etc. (because they're staunchly pro-Israel).
Now personally, I am a strongly liberal, secular Jew; are other Jews also liberal? Although I have religion it is my private matter and I am strongly against displays of religion and anything that blurs the separation of church and state. I do not believe it's necessary to be religious to be moral; religion plays no role in my everyday life; I am pro-abortion, pro-legalization of drugs and prostitution, and my outlook is very socialist and more in line with European cultures. Also I was against the war in Iraq, and I loathe the right-wing Christian Conservatives and also -- yes! -- Lieberman, who tries to shove "morality" down our throats. I hate any hypocrite who does that and who whines about "too much sex and violence on TV" and crap like that. I'd vote for Howard Dean, although he wouldn't be my first-choice Dem.
So..... any perspectives? Am I an aberration in terms of American reality and Jewish culture? Or is my sociopolitical outlook *generally* similar to other Jews'?
Keep in mind I immigrated to the US from Russia, a European Socialist culture.
Members of the more religous streams will obviously want to keep the Jewish homeland as Jewish as possible hence they'll vote for the more right-wing led party, The Republicans in our days.
Thos who are Secular will want peace in the middle east (Meaning they would want to vote Democrats) etc. but will not feel like they have any different role in this than the common (christian) American.

| Originally posted by Eugene I've known American secular Jews who hated Clinton, particularly for the Monica scandal and thought it right to impeach him for his "immorality." Doesn't sound very liberal to me. Also many more-or-less secular Jews here in the States disliked Clinton for his peace efforts... I always supported Clinton and think he was a great President. |
I was just assuming.
If I remember correctly, someone on this forum posted a research which showed that quite large majority of jews voted for Gore instead of Bush.

- I live in a predominantly Jewish community on the Northeast of Miami, in a city called Aventura. Everything is Jewish here. Anyways, this is one of the most democratic sections of the county or, South Florida.. so I dont know.. atleast in my area Jews are more tours democrats. Although there is a small amount whome Ive encountered who supported Bush's "War on Iraq" just because they had the idea that it would help Israel since Saddam was "supposedly" the source for Terrorism on the middle east as well the aid. Funny enough is that, Terrorism is getting worst and worst by the day there.. but thats out of this topic.
Well, thats what I see on my community. This city was also the place where Clinton stayed on his last visit tours South Florida.. the Jewish welcomed him very warmly, and yes, that was after the Monica Lewinsky.

For the most part, Jews, blacks and Latinos tend to vote Democratic.
As the Jewish population gets richer you will see more and more Republicans, as in the case of many Corporate Lawyers I know. Though as a group the Jewish Population historically votes Democrat, and will continue to do so for awhile.
Catholics also use to vote Democrat for Social Justice issues, but now they have decided to vote Republican due to Abortion, which is retarded b/c that is one issue but whatever... (I am Catholic)
Minorities also tend to vote Democrat. (I am half Hispanic.)
