Smiley DJ plummet - damaged (extalin remix)

hey there, i started this a week before the competition so i didnt finish on time and while i was trying to upload it i downloaded one of the remixes and broke the rules of the competition, so i decided to resign myself, and thats why im posting it up here before the competition is over.

anyway, i made it with reason 2.5, cubase sx, sound forge, and t-racks 24. I did something interesting with the vocals... see the way she says it in the original is way too fast for me and i didnt really like the way she said it, so what i did was load up the acapella into cubase sx and i time stretched individual words to make her sing in a different rhythm (not just timestretching the whole acapella track, but actually timestretching individual words/syllables). anyway, most of the work was done in reason and then a fair amount in cubase, i edited stuff in sound forge and then mastered in T-Racks 24.

this is the second song i have actually finished (cuz i had motivation due to the competition)... ive started a good many things (been producing for about a year and a half) but i have a lot of trouble finishing stuff.

SO, ill quit rambling and let you get to listening:

Thumbs up

Hey man !
I like it !!!
Wery nice breaks at 4:10 mark
Hmm... but I think it needs a little remastering to remove its smoothness...
Anyway very well done !!!

Posted by extalin on Aug-25-2003 17:02:

thanks man, i have had several comments on the sound like yours, so i am going to go work on the mastering/mixing some more and when i finish i will post an updated version.

Posted by dbl on Aug-25-2003 17:04:

sounds really nice.

kinda like what you have done to the vocals.. sounds good

agree on the mastering thou.. otherwise it's great

Posted by MeiX on Aug-25-2003 17:12:

Definately nice and clean production.

Only one thing i don't like: vocals don't quite fit before big break...

Posted by extalin on Aug-25-2003 17:17:

thanks for the comments.

meix: what do you mean they dont fit? like musically because of the notes, or it just doesnt seem like a good place for them?

Posted by MeiX on Aug-25-2003 17:40:

Well, its hard to explain. The vocals on the background are ok and give this nice atmosphere. But lead vocals from 2:05 don't quite fit to this atmoshpere in my opinion... Maybe the rhythm of the vocals is too simplistic... don't know.

Posted by extalin on Aug-25-2003 19:19:

oh ok, i think i know what you are talking about.. thats how i want them to sound though so its ok with me. everyone is entitled to their own opinion .

NOTE: right now im updating the mix and im going to upload a better version soon (probably within the next 30 mins to an hour).

this sounds awesome, you've handled the vocals very creativly, I like them a lot more than the originals.

great job

Posted by Phorte on Aug-26-2003 08:47:

still listening to it now..

im really liking it so far.. i can see how the vocals doesnt sit with everyone.. its like, a subtle thing to it where it just isnt quite perfect in some parts. hehe.. production is clean though.. very nice.

OMG, awesome remix! it's a real shame you were too late to enter the competition, because in my opinion this one of the best out of those that were sent in!

i love what you've done with it, very original track on its own and also the vocals are very cool indeed!

one thing though, the bassline is a tad too deep, when it changes key some of the power gets lost..

but overall a great remix!

83%

Sounds like a very good remix, nothing really to complain about. I'm not that much a fan of the track though, since I think it sounds a bit monotonuous (no apparent melodies or leads)... But you made in more interesting for me

Keep it up!
Wim

christofa: glad you like the vocals

Phorte: yeah, the timestretching idea was something that just popped in my head while i was working on the remix and i didnt even know if it was going to work.. i think it turned out o.k., but i know its not perfect.. hehe i wish i could have gotten her to come record the vocals over again LoL.. but we all know that is not a likely thing to happen (maybe one day... ha).

tor8024: glad you like it .. yeah i wish i would have submitted on time.. i would have been in the competition and that downloading mess would have never happened because my account would have been deleted already. but anyway.. about the bass... i had a really tough time with it sounding right on certain systems.. it used to be much worse so much that when it changed key that it would totally disapear on my roomates computer speaker system (on my system it sounds fine, but i always listen to my work on lots of other systems to detect problems). so i played around with it a whole lot and its somewhat better now, but like you said its just a really deep bassline and unless you have speakers that can go down that low then it will lose energy like you said. i know the bass will sound very good in a club though, because the energy is there its just in the very low frequencies.

wim: 'more interesting' is good

have a feeling you would have placed high in the competition heh
great work!
love what you did to the vocals, atleast after the break (i don't like them in the original at all).

the bassline sounds good on my system (sub!) i'm not a fan of the simple offbeat basslines though.
some crazy synths at around 5 mins, did you use the scream4? really like the gated synths too

keep it up

Posted by dj_alucard on Aug-26-2003 18:37:

ok i like it

some work would have to be taken with teh vocals though

otehr than that you song is unique and has a great sound

the vox at some points dont really fit with teh rest of teh song

other than that

bang up job

thanks for the replies!

i get what you guys are saying about the vocals, i wasnt really sure what i was doing heh. this is the first time ive worked with vocals in a song (well on divergence i had that vocals sounding track but it wasnt vocals with words) so i just tried to be creative with it.. next time i think i will try to make it flow better.

haak: hehe yeah i love gated stuff... that first 'gated synth' you hear is actually a string patch for the nn19 that i have and then gate it on 1/16 notes with some on and some off and then apply a delay and run it all through the bad ass scream 4 (heh you were right).. the scream 4 played a big big role in a lot of the instruments.. (i am a guitar player so i love distortion)..

thanks again for listening everyone

I'm very impressed with this remix. Most of the time the stuff you did with the vocals was very good and very creative. At times I was put off a little, but that might also be because I've just remixed it myself and have become used to the vocals in their original form Can't fault anything production wise. I didn't think the bass came too low. I think you should've stayed in the comp. Doesn't really matter if you downloaded a song as it was a misunderstanding, and it doesn't affect the judging in any way. I don't think the time you entered matters as well. Again, great stuff

yeah i think this is why a lot of ppl are a little unsettled by the vocals.. because they're sectioned and phrased so differently from the original, and most of us are so used to the original (unfortunately) i guess it'll take a few listens for it to sit well hehe

well done either way though.. production is crisp!

More I listen to this song, more I realise that it's an kick ass remix !!!

Your song has made me feel like quiting producing ITs Very good, what Eq did you use? and VSTS?

Posted by extalin on Aug-28-2003 13:37:

dont quit producing it took me a long time to be able to get my music to sound anything like i wanted it to and im still learning so much every time i work on something... the only way you will get better is to just keep trying.

for the song i used all the instruments and effects in reason 2.5 except for the nn-xt and the dr. rex. thats where most of the sounds are from and i did a lot of eq work in reason. then, in cubase i added a few more sounds like during the breakdown when the piano comes in.. that piano sound is a VST called 'mda piano' i think it is free (it sounds pretty good after you put some fx on it like reverb).. then i also used the Albino, Pro 53, and +z3ta (for the wicked bass sound during the breakbeat section is a combination of a subtractor synth in reason with scream 4 distortion, then a +z3ta preset like the 'huge' one but not that one exactly (it would do), then a similar sounding albino synth (maybe detune trance lead), and also a pro-53 (i think megadance)). anyway, you get the idea about all the layers being used to make that 'full' sound.

as for eq, i do most of it when im designing the sound i want so that it will already be right when i get done with all the instruments.. its kind of bad because i will spend a long time just messing with a sound instead of coming up with the music.. but i guess it works ok.. but then after im done with the whole song, i export all the different instrument tracks to their own wave file (24 bit 48khz) and i load all the wave tracks into cubase in a new project and then i add more stuff by messing with the audio files by cutting and pasting things and timestretching stuff and adding more fx like reverb or EQ if i think its necessary (cubase sx has a nice eq imo). so, finally i get everything tweaked how i want it and export that project to one mixed down stereo wave file at 24 bit 44.1khz (i have been working in 24 bit 48khz up until this point) and then i load that file into T-Racks and apply a highpass filter at about 30 - 35 hz... some 2:1 compression, and a little limiting. then i export that dithered to 16 bit and you end up with a nice 16 bit 44.1khz wave file ready to burn on to a cd or encode into mp3.

hope that give u some ideas damie.. and thanks for listening.

i love the bassline, its so simple but very ooomphy
and the atmosphere is great, some great light sawy noises on the left panning...pro53 or the scream 4 distortion?

good intro, building synths with nice flange oh oh vocals nice nice

nice breakbeats, then bam into the 4x4. love it dude great track
only thing i might say is it needs a little more energy wit a solid lead thats all
