Why do florida ppl think you invented breaks

Recently a few people from florida have mentioned to me that florida was the birthplace of breakbeat and I wonder do you all think that way because if you honestly do your history, you find out that breaks started in NEW YORK with kool keith herc, why do you claim the birthplace of breakbeat. Of course the uk has gone far better in terms of talent because you have icey (YUCK!!!!!!) and baby anne (YUCK!!!!!) and you claim to be the birthplace of breakbeat...my question is WHY??????

Posted by LiquidX on Aug-28-2003 00:07:

I know crap about breaks history, but I suppose because Florida is like the "capital" of breaks.. it could have been invented somewhere else, but breaks in Florida, especially in central and upwards, breaks its everywhere

Florida is the Capital when it comes to Funky Breaks...Thays wat I hear but thats just my 2 cents....

and anyways

Wow no need to ATTACK... jeezus. I personally listen to breaks also and to be honest I'm not sure where it all originated so I'm not .. along with anyone else on this board I'm sure claiming anything. Its very true that breaks are most prominent in Florida; maybe that's why your friends think it may have started here?!

And well, since you feel so strongly on the subject and I am now quite intrigued myself.. why don't you tell us a bit about Breakbeat history then?

haha, captain bitter strikes again!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-28-2003 00:35:

not much history

kool keith herc started playing 2 copies of a record on turntables in new york in the late 70's. Dunno they called it breaks...rofl..then it sorta found it's way to the uk....where hardcore was emerging...mind you hardcore was not jungle and all the other stuff. I believe it found it's way to florida because deejays wanted to play the clubs and it took off i guess.

it was never an attack....i just wonder why you consider something yer own...if you did not create it...then again..we canadians did that with hockey and we own yer asses (consider that an attack if you wish).

Posted by whitesmoke on Aug-28-2003 01:24:

just b/c a few people from fl thinks that breaks started in fl does not mean that we all think that. sorry you have met such poorly informmed individuals. if i met a few people from toronto that said canada sucks and it is a worthless piece of land would it be safe to assume that all people from toronto feel that way? do you? just a thought...

and on the note about hockey....so what. how have your teams done in other sports against the us? not so good.

The only thing florida invented was the "retirement community"

Attacks by the people who brought us Celine Dion.

Hello! Breaks are.. more common from Florida DJs?

I'm not a big fan of breaks, I actually realy hate them, except when they are in trance songs for a few seconds, like in ferry corsten's punk, but I do know that every other dj in florida is obsessed with them.

actullay, its just Kool Herc.. there is another artist that go by the name 'Kool Keith' the reason why im bringing this up.. Kool Herc is like a godfather to hip hop[responsible for pioneering hip hop culture] from the Bronx.. hence, Bronx being the birthplace of hip hop.. hip hop's first element is djing, and it all started with kool herc spinning break beat records then evolved to mcing, along with break dacing and graffiting.. so yeah, u can say nyc 'sparked' the breaks revolution.. and about miami, they are the pioneers for the 'bass' sound.. fast breakbeats..[strip club music, thats what i call it ]

i am here.

there are different kind of breaks of course. there are the funky breaks (icey, baby anne, rick west, sharaz, etc), which actually started in florida. thats why i as well as many other people call them FLORIDA funky breaks.

now there is nuskool, which started in england. blim, rennie pilgrem, tayo, etc.

and i dunno about progressive breaks, they are still pretty new and done by a wide range of artists, momu, luke chable, etc.

and lemme tell ya something, funky breaks were big WAY before nuskool ever was. and imo, had it not been for funky breaks, all the beautiful breaks releases we are seeing weekly now would not be here. so dont knock funky breaks. if its not your cup of tea, leave it.

i'm sorry some morons claimed that all of breaks started in florida. thats stupid. but you should know that most people dont know shit anyway, so why believe them?

and i dunno for a fact, but i'm fairly sure funky breaks have been around since the early 90s, and that the nuskool scene wasnt much until the mid to late 90s.

so HA!

so umm where did old skool breaks start? its kinda like that trancey jungle crap you could only here when they did old skool breaks night at buzz.

oh and if progressive breaks are so new, whats hybrid been doing for the last 10 years.

old skool i have no idea, i'm not really into them.

and i dont consider hybrid progressive breaks. i consider hybrid to be hybrid. they are too unique and make such a wide range of electronic music that any genre or sub genre you want to put them in won't be sufficent.

two years ago i didn't consider "progressive breaks" to be a genre, but it diffenetly exists now, and thats the main reason i don't put hybrid in that catagory. hybrid was there first.
