Paul van Dyk - 'Reflections' Album Press Advances Out --- reviewing
So I got my copy today in the mail. Was wondering if anyone else has gotten theirs. Just wondering what people are thinking. I usually like to do public forum reviews of these typically overhyped or underhyped albums.
So far Ive listened to Crush, which is decent, though I dont like how they dont note in the tracklisting that its a Vs. track with Second Sun. I just went through Time of Our Lives, and its like a breakbeat version that is different from the one he played live @ Energy 2003. I like the Vega 4 vocals, it just seems though that the vocals carry the song, and his beats are just there so he can put his name in front of the title.
Ill keep updating as I listen more. I just pray that he finally gets out of his mundane production style, and finally captures me the way he did with 'Vega' (Original Mix), by far one of the most beautifully produced tracks Ive heard in electronic music.
First post!
well, i for one am eagerly waiting to buy this album. if i had the whole thing i would be able to share a much better view. as i posted in the new releases sections, samples are on PvD's webpage of about 40 seconds for each song. Of course there are songs we all already know and like. for the other ones, that have been heard live at his gigs, i have only heard the samples.
i think crush is solid. time of our lives is great, even from the sample of the actual album version, i like it a lot. its pretty different and has a much more "rock" feel. its only a sample, but i'm not enjoying the little part i hear of "like a friend". home is great, i have heard this live, i love this song. "never forget" seems like a promising above average chill song. i am not a fan of "knowledge", though i don't know what the rest of the song offers. the vocal usage its just not for me. "that's life" is a solid production, though getting used to that voice is going to take me some getting used to. i would be interested in remixes of this. apparently its paul's voice!? "spellbound" is a fantastic one, up there with "home". "kaleidoscope" is quite nice as well. buenaventura seems the same in the sample, sounds just as good as it did before, but nothing particularly intreaguing or unique. from the sample of "connected", i am quite pleased as it doesnt have the whaling quality of the motorola mix. maybe i just can't tell from the quality. but i enjoy all versions of this song that he made -- i like the energy and feeling in it. the sample of "reflections" is so totally different from the anthem he has been banging that people have labelled reflections. i love what i'm hearing in this sample. im particularly looking forward to hearing this track in full!
all in all, its pretty solid if you ask me. i was just a little taken aback by "like a friend" and "knowledge" and "that's life" is "interesting", but like i said, production is nice on it and remixes would probably give it a nice twist.
Well?..
Did you "DIEE!1"?

too bad arturo is away from the country...he'd be dead 10 times, flip over in his grave, and die 5 more times.

I was surprised to hear so many vocals used for this album...only two tracks dont contain some kind of vocal, those being Connected and Buenaventura...I wonder why he chose the vocal route?
That's what I wonder because Paul Van Dyk was so much better making vocal LESS trance songs that made you weep. That's why I feel this album will be a letdown because I enjoy Paul Van Dyk's NON VOCAL TUNES with the exception of tell me why, together we will conquer and we are alive and beautiful place.
I LOVE THE AMbient style that he's got... i simply love this guy... my fav track is never forget... i love that chilling beat!!!!!!
but he could have gone a little easy on the vocals...
(putting on flamesuit)
i dont think 'time of our lives' and 'crush' is all that hype :d
(taking off flamesuit)
i'd rate it 8/10 and definately buy it :d
