Genres Help

could someone post all the dance genres (like trance techno house prog house prog trance dnb tribal house etc etc) and with 2 songs that could define a genre?

Posted by Cobalt on Sep-02-2003 08:46:

Ishkur's Electronic Music Guide v2.0 will be nearing completion in a few days. He will provide all the samples and jaded, biased definitions of every genre you could possibly want.

So just stick around a bit until it's done. There's no real comparison over the net that I've ever found to his.

Instead of starting a completely new thread I thought I would dig up an older one that was similar for my question. How would you define tribal its subgenres if any. I believe I was at a club and was expereincing it but not sure.

Check this link:

ISHKUR

Then just click on 'Ishkur's Guide to Electronic music'. It'll bring up a Flash application with loads of info on the different genres. Click 'House' and then 'Tribal' and listen to the samples he's got on there. That should give you a fair idea of what tribal is.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again:

Handbag

Posted by Dj Gracjan on Aug-27-2004 14:41:

^^^^ LOL.....Handbag....like what kind of shit where they on when they thought of that one!??!?!

Posted by kr00t0n on Aug-27-2004 17:59:

handbag house has been around since the early nineties, long before what we now call trance

Posted by Radagast on Aug-27-2004 18:14:

That's funny, because one of the first trance tracks (if not THE first) was released in 1990.

Posted by Torley Wong on Aug-27-2004 18:39:

Not to mention certain research on the arpeggiated, hypnotic layering of trance and those ambient washes were common (without a four-to-the-floor beat) many years earlier in the form of the work of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and others. So add a kick drum and meaty bass and you're almost set to go. Of course, the tricks have increased over the years like a stabby, echoed (delayed) sound effect at the beginning of 4/8 bars, or panned gate effects moving inside the speakers back and forth, but the core principles are indeed the same.

Pshhh... when in doubt, invent your own genres.

DJ Joshua H: Haha... it's funny that list was last updated in '02. Oh boy are we in for timeshock.

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!

IMHO that guide sucks. So many useless genres and subgenres of subgenres. Damn genrewhores!

Posted by 3xx3r7 on Aug-27-2004 20:02:

LOL, Ishkurs guide. The most biased and ignorant description of EDM genres ever. Utter crap. Avoid that site, especially if you are beginner in trance.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-27-2004 20:06:

Actually, the first trance track was The KLF- What Time Is Love? (Pure Trance Original) in 1988.

There will be neverending, REDUNDANT arguments about this. Just listen what well-intentioned others have to say, and then decide for yourself what is what. I try not to convince you but I do tell you why I have convinced myself.

Is it the spoon that bends or is it you? Or are you both bending each other?

Regardless of the path you choose, I wish you much enjoyment in your journey through the realm of music. One man may call a bird a bird, and another woman may call it a oiseau, but is beauty not beautiful? Would a rose smell so sweet by any other name? Why is Charmin' Ultra so soft?

Enjoy.

Why not just list some DJs/producers that fit each genre?

Yeah, I mean, up there, DRM sure represented his tastes in music well with that. That's a totally cool thing to do.

Problem is if extending arguments begin -- i.e. Person A lists some DJs/producers, and then Person B says "THOSE AREN'T PROGRESSIVE TRANCE ARTISTS!!!" And then the thread goes to hell in a handbasket.

One reason I like Ishkur's Guide so much is that even though it has a very snarky, sharp sense of humor, the sounds are invaluable and pictograms of a genre map are a lot of fun. OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO READ THE DISCLAIMERS!!! Take it with a grain of sugar. Or a grain of salt. Your choice. *sighs*

But seeing as how no direct alternative to Ishkur's (we'll call it EDM AT ISH'S like EAT AT JOE'S) currently exists -- at least not one that I know of, and if you know of one please let us know! It's better to check it out and decide for yourself instead of never having seen & heard it. Only by collating and collaborating multiple sources can you establish a well-defined, accurate personal thoughtline. Otherwise, it's like shooting blanks without a gun.

Raw data is processed by the self and then mined into usable information. Similarly, only after digesting food can you make use of it. Juggling apples and oranges may be a tricky feat, but it's not the same as being fed.

Ishkur has an opinion. You're opinion differs. If you don't agree with Ishkur's opinion that's your own problem, but it doesn't make his guide any less accurate. And quite frankly, I'd trust his knowledge on EDM over yours. He doesn't like trance. You don't like what he says about trance. Who's wrong there? Nobody. Stop being hypocritical.
