4-6 hour sets

Anyone here tried doing a long set at home?

Im thinking about making between a 4 and 6
hour set at home.
The plus side is i can be more creative in what i play.
Mainly trance with a couple of classic trance tracks
thrown in, a little bit of Prog, Techno, Hard Trance and
Housey stuff.

Thing is i dont know how long i will keep my
concentration for, and i dont want to get bored while
doing it seeing as i will be on my own with nobody
dancing

So has anybody tried something like this and
pulled it off?
And did you work out a tracklisting before you started?

Thanks
Mark

The longest set I did at home was 8 hours. It's more creative like you said. You can play all the records you want from prog to trance to techno and with with build-ups in the set. Nowadays I don't do sets longer then 4, 5 hours. It's hard to keep your concentration when there's no audience only a wall to look at

I never work out a tracklist before I do a set, only sometimes when I'll mix demo-cd's, but most of the times I change it. I like improvising in my set, so no tracklist in advance for me.

Thanks for the advice,
Do You happen to have one of those tracklists so i can have a look at it, just to see what you did. Thanks

8 hours

Oh my, 8 hours. That's alot!
Usually I'm very tired after 4-5 hours. After 6 hours, I can't concentrate anymore at all.

an 8 hour tracklist... that must be about 130 songs

Cool

most ive recorded is 3 hours, most ive played non-stop must be about 8 or so

ewwww spinning for 8 hours at home? Thats soooooo boring.

I spinc twice weekley at one of the retail staores in downtown vancouver. I spin for a minimum of 4 hours, last thursday i did a 6 hour set.

Posted by DjSimonB on Sep-03-2003 21:49:

I gotta try that sometime, I've never thought I'd be up to spinning for more than 2 hours, but it would def be worth a try... now to put aside enough time in the day to spin for several hours, that's the hard bit

When i first got my 1210's, my dad was away for the weekend so i threw a party which lasted 18 hours, in which the turntables didnt stop once !

There was only three of us using them, so i guess 6 hours each although i hogged them longer than that, hehe.

man, when i'm just f-in around by myself, i cant spin more than 1hr at a time. i guess i lose interest fast i guess.

i would probably say i played for about an hour, then took a break, and agian for about 30-40 mins, take a break, and maybe agin for an hour. ive been doing this like 2-3 times a week, all through my headphones, because i cant use the speakers due to neighbour complaints in my condominium. and i always have to wait for my dad to go to work, so he wont break my headphones, as he's done that before like 4 times i think. i havent recoreded a set yet, too many distractions in my house.

I recently did a set where I had to follow on from somebody playing breaks. Started at about 7 and finished at 11:30, my brain really hurt as well as my back from all the crouching over. It was good fun tho got another gig out of it

A gram of coke and 2 pills and you will make the mix of your life.. It will be awsome..

As creative as you can be, there is NO way I could stare at my wall for 6 hours... maximum I could go for in a straight period of time would be like 2.5-3 hours.. Amount of records has something to do with that.. LOL..

Posted by futurevision on Sep-05-2003 03:39:

usually just do 1.5hours ...

but 5hours is normal

6 hours is MAX didn't know i been mixing for 6hours until the sun came up

lots of fun

Posted by djway on Sep-05-2003 04:23:

I've never mixed that long @ home with no-one around.

When friends are about there's no issues, but on my own, on no substances, 2 hours is the longest I've mixed (last night made a set 4 2day ). The last 3 mixes are dodgy as; I think i lost my edge. Average night I mix an hour; i just find it hard to make much more time.

If you get bored doing the set, your in the wrong profession!
If you get bored doing the set, imagine the crowd listening...

Consider those 2 things.

Key is be creative, music is an art - paint a pathway.

well im spinning for a full 8 hours at the store this saturday. Should be fun, all day in the busiest shopping area in Vancouver.

Posted by Zack Roth on Sep-06-2003 18:03:

The longest I have spun at home was like 2 hours. I don't really get bored so much. I have a huge mirror right on the wall that my set up is on, so I'm not staring at a wall. And I always pretend that there are other people around. It helps me concentrate, and get into it a little more.

Posted by Tiger777 on Sep-06-2003 18:10:

Ya, that's true, I've got a mirror in front of me to, and it really helps concentrating. I can recommend this to everyone.
