Serial Experiments, LAIN

Do these get cool?

ive seen first two now, and it looks like its gonna be some weird little girl cyber-journeying around...

Please, don't make the same mistake I did. While watching the series, forget EVERYTHING that you know about the Matrix. I've warned you...

(If you don't, you will get really confused)

lain is a great, yet confusing series that you will probably need to watch another time to understand it.

if you like it, check out other works by the same creator:

Texhnolyze (probably the closest to the mindfuck thing, really really dark)
NieA Under 7- not dark at all, but same creator
Haibane Renmai- another non-dark, really good series

Boogiepop Phantom - many people that like lain also like BP.. not the same creator, though.

and of course since i have to whore out my site as much as possible, you can find screenshots for all the series above, as well recommendations (you could search for lain if you like it) at http://www.anime-planet.com .. then click anime recommendations

ahh, madame cyborg returns! I knew an anime discussion would lure you out

lain is a fuckin mindtrip, gets really interesting after ep. 8. many people have watched it over and over again, and still everyone seems to draw a different conclusion about the ending and what it meant. probably one of the best anime shows ive ever seen

btw, ep 9 is truely awsome for covering the mj12 documents and the government psychi tests back in the sixities. its a conspiracy theorists dream put into action

... and Sothis is finally back

I liked the first 3 episodes (there's no space in the hard disk for the others and I can't be arsed to burn CD's with all my episodes of Excel saga)

Mr. Squirrel, you forgot the other official ninja thread:

"I have only abandoned my body, I still live here" - are the words emailed to friends of Chisa, several days after her death by suicide. As Lain delves deeper into the world of the "Wired" (also known as the internet), the line between it and reality becomes more and more unclear. Close the world, open the nExt.

^^from the anime rec. db on my site

in general, as the description eludes to, it is a series exploring where the line between the real world and the "wired" lies. thats all anyone can tell you without spoiling it.

Herr Squirrel needs to get baqck into watching anime....just have to find a good place to rent it around here. Had a great video store I went to in college. Sigh.

I need to get some cash and buy the Evangelion box. Also need ot buy another copy of Ghost In the Shell (some ****** stole my DVD )

This serial experiment thing looks promising.

BTW nice site sothis.....oddly enough several of my old "favorites" don't have reviews on there. Of course it has been more than half a decade since I saw them so I am in no place to write a review

if you (or anyone) is going to buy it, i suggest getting it here: http://discountanimedvd.com/dvd_detail.asp?dvdno=2049
the dubbing isnt as good, but you pay a few bucks less than what you pay for the first dvd (which is only a couple of eps).

Thanks so much sothis, for putting up your site. I've been looking for an anime website that gives recommendations on other anime videos i might like.

Now I just gotta find a good place to purchase Texhnolyze, I looked everywhere and can only find Boogiepop. Any suggestions ?

Posted by sothis on Sep-07-2003 07:23:

bobbybrown: i am fairly certain that no other database like mine exists, thats why im so damn proud of it

you cant buy texhnolyze yet, unless you were to buy R2... though i dont even think those are out yet. you can check at http://www.cdjapan.co.jp for any R2 releases.

squirrel:
ill admit the reviews for the actual series are lacking, but the focus, i think, is primarily the recommendations/screenshots ^_^

fuct4less: there is a good reason why that is less expensive. that is a bootleg. that site is a very well known HK bootleg site.

DO NOT BUY BOOTLEG ANIME DVDS.

why? the quality is probably ass, the subtitles are probably ass, and in general, they are ass.

three big red warning flags that the dvd you are looking at buying is a bootleg (be careful to look out for this on ebay, or any website like the one fuct4less listed)

1. "REGION FREE"
2. Chinese subtitles
3. Basically, a ridiculously low price for a box set/dvd.. especially a box set/dvd that isn't even released at all in R1... or that is released, but is DEFINITELY not that cheap.

keep these in mind, and you'll never get scammed. trust me, guys.. if you are going to stoop to the level of buying HK rips, you might as well get a downloading program, download the fansubs, and then burn them. the quality will be a ton better, and you will have saved money.

if you want to buy anime dvds, the easiest route is to go to http://www.dvdpricesearch.com .. its like pricewatch, lists prices for a bunch of sites. www.rightstuf.com isnt in the list, they sometimes have good specials, but for hte most part, are usually more expensive. ive had fantastic experiences with digitaleyes (listed on dvdpricesearch) as well as some others. half.com can be good for people selling bulk amounts of factory sealed dvds for cheap, just make sure that they are NOT bootlegs. (make sure to ask the seller, what is the region code, and do they have chinese subtitles... sellers on ebay AND half.com can be sneaky and leave that information out unless you specifically ask)
