Scratching question

Hi, im kinda new to the whole djing thing but have a question about scratching. I use cd players (cdn-88 and cdj-1000) and am wondering what is a good sample to scratch. Should they be a beat, loop, an actual song or what. I am very confused about the whole scratching deal and welp would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

use vocal samples

heard some dj rectangle use morphous speech from the matrix and he scratched and cut that speech to shreads and wikky wookie shit
