How often do you spin for fun / practice?

Just wondering how much everyone out there spins on their own time for fun / practice.

I would say it varies for me. I definetely spend more time when I know I have an event coming up. Usualy though, 1 - 2 hours when I get up and then 1 - 4 hours after school. I love it! Nothing more relaxing. =]

i try to get in an hour everyday although it ends up to be a lot more on the weekends

Posted by patticus on Jul-01-2001 09:10:

wow that's a lot
if i go a solid 1.5 hrs im pretty tired and shit.. esp. if im recording.

i dont think ive ever gone for longer than 2 hrs

the best is after when you just messinng around, come up w/ some crazy shit then

actually i have a dumb setup, i have a shorter desk so if i stand its harsh on my back, i sometimes sit down in a swivel chair adn then stand when im pumped, hehe

Posted by Synergy on Jul-01-2001 09:20:

Yeah sometimes it does get to be too much. I start to realize I'm spinning a little too much when my legs are getting sore from standing up.

It's strange. I will force myself to stop sometimes. Turn everything off. Do something else like homework, but its like my decks are calling me. "MAKE ME SPIN" "MAKE ME SPIN" . hehe. Anyone else hear these voices?

Posted by Blinky on Jul-01-2001 11:38:

Those voices are actually pre-installed samples on your mixer. They have 2 purposes. 1- To make you wear out your equipment faster. 2- To keep you from doing homework so you end up having no choice but to try and DJ 4 a living. Bane or Blessing?

I spin a hour set everyday. There are somedays where I don't have time and I'm always pissed that night not being able to sleep without mixing a vinyl lol. So I literally get up and mix 2 records which makes me feel a lil bit better and I can sleep

Posted by amit on Jul-02-2001 01:24:

yeh i know! i hate that man! i spin about 2-4 hours a day! even somedays more! right after school i watch tv and spin for 4 hours and go to bed! i cant do my hw any more! my grades been droping crazy but oh well! I dont want to spin all of my life! i want it to be a hobby not a career! it would be cool if i am a doctor

i'm beyond the stage most of you guys are in. But I was the same 7 years ago . I don't spin at home any more except for the set I record once a month. Only occasion I use my technics is when I get new vinyl. I'll count the BPMs and listen to the records once or twice to get to know the structure. That's it.
Kinda sad, but I haven't been spinning just for fun for 2 or 3 years now. But maybe that's because I can spin at parties now.

Patticus, my first setup had me sitting in a swivel-chair, too!

Posted by patticus on Jul-02-2001 22:47:

dj dawn, thats hilarious... but you dont have fun anymore?
i guess maybe you just have fun at parties huh..

My techs a visit from moi at least an 1-2 hours a day. I mean no problem. On weekends (as it was previously said) I can spin 4 hour sets no problem. All of a sudden I'm like fuck I'm hungry! haha

My fav thing about spinning is that, no one talks to you. No distraction of voice. Just concentration and enjoyment of tunes. I love it. For me it's relaxing cuz I never shut up.

I hope I always enjoy spinning, DJ Dawn, I can see what you mean mainly because it's money to you now.

nah, don't get me wrong here. First, it's not money to me. I do get paid for playing at parties, but it's hardly enough to make up for the records I buy.
Second, I still enjoy spinning very much. I just don't do it at home any more. When you got your chance to play in front of hundreds/thousands of people, spinning at home just isn't the same any more.
I don't want to sound arrogant here, but I don't see the need to practice at home. I concentrate on memorizing the records structure so I can put them to good use.
The only thing I still really want to learn is harmonic mixing. But before I can do that, I need someone to teach me the basics of music in terms of keys and stuff. As long as I cannot find out the key of a given record, there is no way I'll get into harmonic mixing. And right now, I don't have the time to learn these things, cause I'm too involved in my studies.
greets!

yeah there's a great thought, just try to memorize structure of all your shit.

i guess that would count just listening as "spinning" eh

not straight mixing for 4 hrs or so?

nah, haven't done this in years. At home that is.
But I played 4 1/2 hours at a party a couple of moths ago. A lot harder than at home, I can tell you...

Sniff ... so true ...
You just miss the thumdering soundsystem under your feet and watching the people bounce up and down to the tunes that you throw at them.
Yeah, ever since I started playing out, spinning at home has lost the initial appeal, unfortunately. Sometimes you just work better with an audience.

Posted by patticus on Jul-06-2001 11:11:

yeah i did about 4 straight hrs, and then when on and off for another 2, for my *first set* at a friends bday!

but the pressure wasnt that big because most of the people were all hip-hop homies. hah.
so those who were enjoying it, well, actually no one knew much bout trance there. so if i did screw up (i did a couple times) i slammed the fader. actually im not too sure how i did on the whole, beatmixed fine but i suspect my transistions werent great.

sorry to ramble

anyways so yeah i was straight from 8pm - 1 am, then on/off thru to 4am. fuck i was beat after that... even cooling down w/ prog was tiring..

well, my 4 1/2 hours were from 4am to 8:30am. The party was supposed to end at 7 or 7:30, but they were not going home
i was really beat after that one. Don't know how Sven Vth does his sets (he played 20hrs straight...)

Posted by Special_K on Jul-06-2001 19:11:

I dont have my own set so i only get to practice once every 3 weeks or so at my friends house. When I do get a chance to spin we take turns doing mixes for about 3 hours. I've been spinning for about a year now and just recently got my first booking and am now finally getting my own set. I borriwed my friends decks for 2 weeks last summer an I practiced like 3 hours a day....it was just so much fun.

Posted by patticus on Jul-06-2001 21:59:

special k, that's actually maybe even a better situation initially cuz you dont have to blow all the cash right?

anyways, if you dont have enough, or good vinyl, it gets boring fast.

ive been caught between buying "all the classics i missed out on" like love stimulation, mysteryland, the fade (ETC) or trying to keep up w/ new stuff

but i personally dont like a lot of new stuff, even tho there are gems to be found, esp on B-Sides! (e.g. Impact - Modular Control [ITWT], Digger - Estonian Blue [Casa Nostra])

this gives me a good idea for thread.!
