Sad Help With Compy

I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP!!!!

Last night I went to turn on my computer and it stopped loading with the options to go into safe mode, load last good setting and continue loading windows. I tried all the options and my computer would just freeze and not progress once I made my choice.

So I turned it off with the front button and the rear power switch. Then restarted and got a message to check the CPU SOFT MENU in the setup menu before windows loads. I checked it out and nothing was wrong so I restarted and now there is nothing displayed on my monitor

After this nothing has worked to get it loading again. I check all the simple stuff like power cords and stuff...ALL GOOD. I opened it up and nothing was wrong...all fans were working and the HD was spinning.

Just nothing on the display. The last thing I remembered was that Microsoft had just sent out an update the night before. Dont think this is the problem but who knows.

HELP PLEASE

if its giving you a CPU error, take out the CPU card if its a card and use a pink eraser on the gold contacts. if its just a CPU slot, wiggle it. If its beeping reseat the RAM. its a hardware issue if it isnt passing control to the OS. just make sure everything is seated properly. If it IS going to OS, its a driver issue, most likely, but since you cant boot into Safe, sounds like hardware. try taking out the sound card, and booting, then the vid card and booting. sometimes good pieces go bad.

GUH- you guys are killing me-

First all-

Does your monitor have an amber and green lite for standby and on?

Is the Video Card Seated Correctly?

If theres no beeps or anything and you just turn it on

Your CPU is frazzled or your video is fux0r'd

i doubt it would be anything to do with the microsoft patch, as much as we hate them, they do have extensive testing procedures in place for their patches etc.

can you tell us what motherboard, cpu, video card and psu you have?

SPECS and other STUFF

Alright everyone....these are my comp specs
motherboard - ABIT KX-333 (nothing onboard)
cpu - AMD Athlon XP 2000
videocard - GeForce4 4200 128MB
soundcard - dolby digital 5.1 and creative labs (simple soundcard)
ram - 512MB DDR
OS - XP Pro.

I am also behind a router with a second computer and the second computer connected to the router does not have any problems. Also, if I remember correctly...the second computer received the same updates with no trouble.

I dont know what you mean DJ-Fuq but I have been sent updates many times before. Also, after I installed the updates everything was running fine.

I have checked all of the cards and connections...and all are good.
Not sure how to reset the RAM but keep in mind that I can not get passed or into Safe Mode.

Hope this helps someone so they can help me. I guess I should also mention that my hardware background/knowledge is limited so I will need a little dumbing up of this info.
Appreciate the help!!!!!

Take it you hav'nt heard of automatic updates in Windows XP then

BryZe, how old is the PC, and is there evidence of dust in the heatsink (the bit chunk of metal with a fan attached), also does the fan on the heatsink spin?

Also if you have the manual checkout how to reset the cmos, that may help to.

Posted by BryZe on Sep-13-2003 18:49:

Yeah like I said before everything is spinning.

LOL...well I guess over emphasized dumbing up the hardware stuff...I know what the heat sink is.

The computer is only 1 year old.

If your computer powers up but there is no display (and no beeps which indicate improper mounting or critical system failures) then one of three things has happened (most likely anyway)

1. video card fuxx0rzed
2. cpu fuxx0rzed
3. you've unplugged your system speaker and it is beeping you just cant hear it =)

in any event try re-seating all the shit in the machine and picking up an el cheapo video adapter to see if thats the problem =) (its like 15 us for like a sis agp 4 mb... just to see if it's a vid card prob).

oh also you could have been running your memory at too aggressive of settings (i.e. you bought memory too slow for your cpu bus speed) and it went tits up, surprisingly common, cpu's will usually fail to post if the memory module(s) dies completely. Sometimes memory can be dodgy and just go out too, if you buy the cheap crap

Posted by BryZe on Sep-13-2003 19:22:

SuperFatStucker^^^^^^^^
There are beeps when loading so I knew there was something else wrong. I guess I should also mention that I restored the video signal to my monitor and checked everything to be seatting properly. The memory in the computer is all matched properly and I have tested for this. Also the memory was not purchased from Future Shop and I know its not crap.

Alright...so I have done some research and checked some good resources and think the problem is a virus hit, a bad block on my harddrive or a corrupt file.

I know how to fix the corrupt file part but the other 2 I know nothing about.

try this, unplug the power from the back, then pop out the watch battery looking thing, itll reset your BIOS and should make it work.

Posted by BryZe on Sep-13-2003 22:37:

Yeah I did this already Orbax and nothing....but thanks for the help.

A virus? don't you have any protection like norton

Posted by BryZe on Sep-13-2003 23:06:

Of course I do and I am behind a router....but that doesnt always matter. Virus software only protects from open files, downloading files and emails. You virus check and the xp updates are always behind aswell...which explains why they update all the time.

Also, my virus scan checks for the latest updates as soon as I start up my computer.

They dont email out updates. There was a new virus like a month ago that sent itself out, with the sender put as [email protected] or something saying it was an update and loads of people fell for it

Posted by Orbax on Sep-14-2003 03:01:

guys...if it isnt handing over control to the OS, any software wont be affecting it. Only Firmware and Hardware and hardcoded flashable ROM instructions. Nothing else.
