Maxtor Hard Drive Problem.. Help NEEDED!!

i am so pissed words cannot explain.. i just bought a new computer and it's about a month old.. just today when i loaded my computer it says "primary hard disk failed" n it just stops.. i was freaked out cuz i DONT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS.. i need help

maxtor 40.00gb.. and it just says primary hard disk fails

after i disconnect/reconnet my power cord and then it just starts to work.. it's so weird but it gets annoying because i have to do this everytime.. and the computer store where i got this from is very far and i dont feel like going there again.. anyone know anything i can do physically to stop this problem? THANKS!

I've had experience with TWO Maxtors, both 40 gigs. Both died.
The 40 gig maxtor sucks. End of story.

if something is wrong with a hard drive it will show up when you 1st get it (1-2 weeks) after that ur out of the woods.

you should go to maxtor's site download and run their disk drive utility. This will unequivocally tell u the health of ur drive.

obviously u should be backing up everything until u get things resolved.

Oh yeah, and always LLF before returning/exchanging the drive.

Buy a Seagate...that will help

If you just bought the computer within the last 90 days it shoudl be under the computer company's warranty. I would check with them.

i got 2 maxtors and 2 WDs and they never died on me before. it must be sometyhin wrong iwth your setup? or u have spywares/virusesses

oh, and i lost a 160 gig HD that was completely full. think about that and youll be happier. i had BOOKS i had written and was working on and didnt have in any other form. 7 years of shit down the drain

Honestly, I've never had a problem with Maxtors, and in the IT field, I've installed them in dozens of other computers that have never had a problem.

Could it be that some of you just don't take proper care of your PC's, and are blaming it on the hard drive? I'm getting a little sick and tired of people on TA (and I really only hear this from 3 or 4 people, all of whom reside on TA in the chillout forum) saying that Maxtors are crap without any correlative proof of this (i.e. documented bugs, schematics, mechanical info, or even the ability to reproduce a particular error).

Just so you all know, in the computer engineering industry, no drive is "crash proof", i.e. they all have a MTF (Mean Time to Failure) - obviously this statistic isn't published, but keep in mind that it exists for ALL drives. I know just as many people who've had their WD or Seagate drives screw up - and to recommend IBM! Oh my god, don't ever buy a drive from IBM!!!

Two programs you want to run: spinrite and Maxtor's own drive utility from www.maxtor.com.

The 40 gig Maxtor has a reputation for failing prematurely. That and a VIA IDE controller is a bad bad bad combination.

well, on a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.


i've had a 40gb maxtor for over a year now and had no problems with it (besides the fact that i jammed an ide cable too hard and broke off one of the contact pins and had to solder it on)


bought a 160gb one for $110 for storage


both work jsut fine. i guess it just depends on what you do with them. there was this IDE controller card that came with the 160g hd that was supposed to make everything run faster... it did, but my mp3s started skipping, so i had to remove it.

i was network admin for 2 years, and my brother was an admin for 8. and every other admin we know hates Maxtors also.

also maxtor wouldnt be in business if every hard drive failed. its just a shockingly high rate. congratulations that yours hasnt failed?

Congratulations on your IT profession, there are more network admins out there than the corporations can manage to hire, it doesn't prove shit.

Can we keep in mind that your statistics are based on personal experience and also localized... aside from you and a few others on this forum, I've heard very few negative reports about these drives. I'm not normally one to defend corporations, especially if I feel that they've done a shoddy engineering job, but the constant Maxtor-flaming from you guys is getting a little ridiculous.

whereas yours are uber-generalized i assume. and look up Denali Advanced Integration, it was in the paper for fastest growing tech consulting firm in west coast history. We take boeing jobs and stuff away from Anderson Consulting. I wouldnt say we are "localized" with offices around the country

anyways, i dont really give a shit who believes me, go and buy maxtors if you want.

Where you're trying to prove something, I'm only trying to disprove you - all I have to do is find an example that contradicts your theory and my work is done, and we have seen several such examples.

Sorry to be so harsh, but I don't care who you work for, it makes no sense to say "you should listen to me because I'm in IT". Personal background means absolutely nothing when you're making a generalization like this. I'm in electrical engineering, but I'm not trying to use my education to prove anything. You're claiming something to be statistically true/probable, so show us a frickin' statistic (with source) or STFU!
