Dunno Song ratings...

How can anyone give a song 10/10? I know its only a personal thing but giving a track 10/10 means its absolutly flawless? Maybe PvD's - For an Angel or Lost Tribe - Gamemaster deserve a 10/10. But then again there will be people that disagree with me. Just wanted to know what you all thought...

Only Yahel - Voyage and Rank 1 - Airwave deserve a 10/10 in my book

Posted by sandstorm03 on Sep-18-2003 22:27:

from what i def know it is officially Dreamland(2003 live edit)...if u can find their energy set..they played it there...it is an improvement on their original which is AMAZING!!!!!!!

Posted by rory21 on Sep-18-2003 22:39:

you see i rest my case, but it seems as tho everytime a new tune comes out its a 10/10. you just loose crediablity in doing so

Posted by sandstorm03 on Sep-18-2003 22:46:

I understand what u mean...but it isnt totally a new song...its just an improvement of the Orig which i would give just about a 10...you gotta hear it...live especially...

the problem with song ratings are their complete subjectivity. I could say a song is 10/10, but you might give it 3/10. there's so many different factors that contribute to a song that it's nearly impossible to quantify all the aspects and create an accurate rating system.

but that's also why it's fun to check out songs other people really like, to figure out why they like what they do.

I give Poloroid's "So Damn Beautiful" Andy Morris remix a 10/10, but lots of people here don't like it. to each their own

WHO CARES ABOUT ANY 1 ELSE...WE ALL KNOW MY RATING IS THE ONLY 1 THAT MEANS ANYTHING....hehe! ....

I'm glad someone brougt this up.

The real problem is the scale. A ten point scale isn't precise enough if everyone is going to give 10's all the time. It needs to be done on a hundred point scale, or use decimals like 9.5 or 8.7. I have no problem with people giving 10's all the time. I respect that as that person's opinion.

Here's the real thing though. In my personal opinion, if I rate 3 different songs all 10's, do I like them all equally? Probably not. I would like atleast one of those songs more than the other two. So let's say that makes one of them 9.5, one 9.7, and one 9.9.

The other problem is that there is no universal scale. For one person a 6/10 might be a bad song, but for the next person it could be considered better than average or the medium of the scale which might be a 5/10.

I think we need a universal TA Rating Scale. Something that might look like this:

0 - Doesn't exsist (If someone took the time to make the song
it deserves to be rated atleast a 1)
1 - Physically hurts your ears to listen to
2 - Doesn't Physically hurt, but you feel dumber after hearing it
3 - A definate Waste of Time
4 - Tolerable, but it needs a remix
5 - Average
6 - Getts better after several listens
7 - Worth Buying
8 - Great song, but after a few hundred plays you'll be sick of it.
9 - Absolutely Amazing Record! I'll never get sick of it.
10 - One of the best records ever made (in my opinion of course)

You could then use decimals to vary your ratings, because everybody can usually distinguish between which of their 10's are there absolute favorites.

And one more thing. There is no such thing as an 11/10 or a 15/10 or what ever. If the record is that good, then you rated a whole bunch of other 10's too high.

Anybody else have ideas for a Universal TA Rating Scale, or the UTARS for short?

The rating will also depend on your view of how ratings should distribute: If you think that x/10 should be awarded to roughly 10% of all tracks then it's a natural thing to rate "many" tracks 10/10.

However, if you view ratings as following a bell curve distribution with many tracks getting 5/10 and 6/10, less getting 7/10 and 4/10 and so on until almost no songs getting 10/10 and 1/10, then you will most likely never assign 10/10 to any track.

It all depends on where you want to be able to distinguish: To me it is important to know whether a slightly above average track is on almost good or jsut average - as that decides whether I will check it out or not. If all those tracks are lumped into one pile labelled 6/10, then I cannot do that.
But if it is most important for you to know whether a tracks is fantastic or absolutely uniquely incredible then you need the bell curve distribution.

Why the hell do you need to give ratings to tunes anyway? Like anyone cares what score you give to it.

You either like it or you don't. I don't need to give any scores to tell you that.

Posted by sash on Sep-19-2003 06:45:

well if i know i have similar tastes in music as someone, and they rate something well, i'll know that i'll probably like it too... so i'll be on the lookout for that track

Hahahahaahahaha I haven't laughed like that in a long time, so true tho.

10 means 'absolutely perfect', and it doesn't exist in my opinion..

"fire & ice - lost emotions (original mix)" is my favorite trance track of all time, but even that one is "only" worth 9.6 or something..

0 is impossible as well, even summerjam 2003 deserves 0.3

Posted by m0sh on Sep-19-2003 14:59:

My ratings are diff from others...

11/10 is perfect
10/10 very good
9/10 good
8/10 nice
7/10 blah
6/10 sux

/me is special... !

11/10 = james holden - nothing

10/10 This track has absolutely nothing wrong with it, and you've never got tired of it.

9/10 A track you'd go out of your way to buy, and one that you always play if its on a CD. This is one of your favourite records.

8/10 A very good track, one that you'd buy if you saw it, and one that you'd recommend to a friend, but would get tired of after a while.

7/10 A good track that you would listen to if it was on a CD, but wouldn't skip ahead to. You'd buy it if it was cheap, but not otherwise.

6/10 A decent track that you listen to when you're in the mood for a change. You can listen to it happily, but that's about it.

5/10 An average track, one you think is okay, but nothing special, and you'd probably skip it before it finished.

4/10 A below average track you don't like and won't listen to it except for the first time.

3/10 A bad track you don't like and have never listened to all the way through

2/10 An appalling track that you'd skip if it started playing and would denounce to anyone.

1/10 An unbearably bad track that you have to either skip or leave the room when it starts playing. Its actually discomforting to listen to.

I can give about 5 tracks 10/10, such as PPK- ResuRection, DJ Tiesto Suburban Train and Binary Finary- 1998.
