Hey, Well here's the deal. I know everyone is prolly gonna start throwin' stones at me... but anyways...

Im gonna be buying DJ equipment, I mean - Im a newb, so im gonna go with a starter set. Im getting myself

1 SK-6F two channel mixer

2 520SK DJ Craze model cartridges

1 DJ PRO 60 stereo headphones

2 Slipmats

2 Dust Covers

All for $499.99 US.

Anyways, I really want a pair of Technics but hell, I aint made of money... I know this is a one in a lifetime investment, but I got other stuff to pay for.

Agreed..

Agreed, but otherwise check out the Numark TT200's, they are soposed to be a good budget deck. A coworker of mine had the stanton 80s, and he doesn't like the build quality.

yeah you should give the tt-200s a look, i havent heard too much good stuff about the str8-80s but people that have tt-200s seem to like them
my suggestion, others feel free to chime in
numark tt-200s $200ea
behringer djx700 $200
or VMX 200/300 $120/ $170
sony mdr-v6 $80
stanton carts $50 approx

headpones are personal preference i like the v6s and they're not too expensive. the ones in that dj package probably aren't all that great. if you go this route and buy the stuff seperately it will cost you alittle bit more than $500 but i think that while this stuff isnt exactly top of the line its all nicer than what comes in that dj package. just my opinion. you might try PMing dj tranz he works at a dj store, maybe he can hook you up. if you buy all of this at once you'll probably get some kind of a deal

Hey, thanks guys... I'll look at the tt-200's and I'll PM Tranz

Save up money for the Technics, I bought a pair of numarks with a mixer and headpones, 3 months ago. And it was a huge Mistake, I had to upgrade the mixer and the headphones almost right away. I paid $499 for my "set up" a month later Mixer died so I bought a new one for $199-230 then I realized that I needed new headphone so I bought the Sony 700 for $100, two weeks ago the needles "died" I bought the Shure Whitelabes $210, and soon I'll have to buy the technics so if you do the math I've spent almost $1000 without a new pair of TT's which I hopefully will really soon , I know you want to start Djing ASAP, it was the same with me but I regreted and you will as well .
Please do not do it, just save up some money and get the technics.

Thanks guys, well I guess im gonna have to save up then. I cant believe that the only good/reliable turntable u can get is a 1200. I mean there should be something else out there thats close to the quality yet cheaper in price, no?

If you guys know any online stores where I can get it for cheaper let me know please

Toodles.

The STR8-80s are fine as well as the stanton cartridges. Those are what I have and they do the job.

They may 'do the job', but doing the job, and doing the job well, are two different things .

I was in the same predicament you are at the beginning of the year. I got everything I needed to start spinning for $300 (Go to DJTronix and look for the $300 Numark package) and used it for 6 months while learning. I've slowly upgraded since then, but I still have my $5 headphones and Numark TT1625 decks. The pitch fluctuates a bit near the 0 mark, but other than that they've suited me fine for a good 8 months.

I really don't understand why everyone says just get Techs. It's not the end of the world if you don't, just know that if you get serious about DJing, you WILL get them at some point in time.

Why wait though?

Just save and get them, point, blank, and simple...

And also, who says you need new ones, get Tech's off of eBay, thats where I bought mine, both TT's together costed $550 - $50 shy of the cost of 1 new Tech.

Depends what your income is. For me, there was a HUGE difference between $300 and $1000 since I'm a college student with a part time job and other bills. I'd much rather get started and have a shitload of vinyl right off the bat instead of waiting 3-4 months and having nothing left to spend on vinyl.

technics are at the top of the food chain when comes to turntables but they aren't the only good/ reliable turntables out there. if you have the money to spend you cant go wrong with technics, however if you dont have alot of cash to spend on a set of decks then you can certainly get by with out them. by all means, if you can shell out the cash for 1200s go for it, you wont be dissapointed but dont think that the only decks that you can use for djing are 1200s. tt-200s are good decks, st-100s, st-90s, etc. will all get the job done as well. i probably wouldnt venture too far down the line into the really cheap turntables out there but these ones that i've mentioned are fine.
to all of the technics lovers, i'm with ya, i understand your arguement of buying technics right off the bat but realize that some people just dont have that kind of cash to spend on two turntables.

Blah, im tempted to go with one of those packages, the Stanton Str8-100 package.

Its a good deal, Maybe i'll just slowly upgrade later...

Posted by razzi on Sep-21-2003 13:17:

everyone says technics are the best, and most clubs have them. when i started i looked everywhere to find a nice set of 1200s.. but after looking at the tables and then at my wallet.. no way. i thought it out ALOT, and i decided that i could do without the best at home. i opted for st8-80s.. (the best stanton decks at the time) and i love them. these are pretty good decks, and if youre planning on getting them, i definitely recommend them to the beginner. their torque, pitch shift etc etc are damn good. (if you can get the st-100s though, DO IT, ive checked them out and damn they are nice..)

if money is a big deal, dont go for techs yet. pay $500-$600 on some stanton str8-80 or 100s, because these are great for home use and practice. i am assuming youre going for the platinum pak 2 or titanium pak.. theyre really good deals for what you get, and there is no lack in quality. if you can go titanium, the str8-100s are great.. good luck diesel0

This site I know used to carry the package with some St-100's but now i guess they've sold out. It was a fucking good deal, $499.00 :|

They still have the St8-80's left, but i want the 100's.

Posted by dj_pontiac on Sep-21-2003 17:35:

dunno what others said
but youll end up buying techs anyway so save your money
i started w/ some gemini pt1000 or something like that, and a couple of months later i sold them and got techs
it was really hard to sell the gemini ones, it wouldnt be the case with technics tables, if you dont want to dj any more you can get more or less what you paid for them originally
my 2 cents
peace

Posted by razzi on Sep-21-2003 17:39:

yeah the titanium pak is a damn good deal.. the $500 alone is worth more than the 2 tables.. one great thing about stanton is that they release new tables (relatively) quickly.. so the prices of the older ones drop, even though they are still damn good. i would say get the st-100s. and if you start making millions by DJing in clubs after the practice you had on your st-100s, get yourself some really nice top of the line technics. :)

happy spinning

Posted by Alccode on Sep-21-2003 20:57:

Unless you are into scratching, there isn't really a compelling reason to get Technics over other decent, but much cheaper tables.

Face it, for trance, all you need is a direct drive with stable and reliable pitch. Torque is not that important.

My first decks were Numark TT-100's, $400 CAD for both of them. I learned how to mix on them, and there is no reason why I should be shelling out $1000 CAD+ to get Technics when I can mix perfectly good on these.

The equipment doesn't matter. What matters is YOU...

Im getting the Behringer DJX300 soon, and yeah - im set!
