Riviera Theatre
4746 N. Racine Ave.
773-275-6800

Be sure to look up at least a few times to see the impeccably crafted ceilings, round window openings and quaint windows. It's one of the North Side's nicest theaters, with easy access to the balcony and fancy 'boxes' above both sides of the stage. So it's weird to see all the grungy punk bands, from Bad Religion to Foo Fighters, pack the place with sweaty, moshing teenagers and smoking black-clad hipsters. Avoid the main floor's pit or you'll have to contend with lots of jostling, nudging, smoking and--this is no exaggeration--women coming up to you during yuppie shows and saying, 'Excuse me, you don't look like you're having a very good time.' Best spots are by the bar, toward the back, if you can stake out position among all the tall people. Beer is cheap and accessible, bathrooms are tolerable and the sound system, depending on the band, is decent. Also the surrounding neighborhood is cool, with lots of Asian restaurants and bizarre shops.

think this is the place george.

cmon bobby.. if it wasn't for the extreme heat that time, it wouild have been a great night

the Riviera is a run down place.. but a good size venue for big acts like pvd....

pork!

I wish PURE would put him at Crobar (it will be open then) but I guess they want it 18+. The Riv isn't the best venue but PVD at the Riv last time was the best set I've seen by PVD or by any DJ BY FAR...I can't wait!

Posted by dj2kTA on Sep-25-2003 00:48:

The Riv is a nice venue. The only time I was there, the heat was extremely bad too. It was for a Prodigy show and after about one hour on the floor my t-shirt was completely soaked in sweat. It wasnt pretty but it was a good time

And I'll be there

your CTAEW President,
Tom

meh I suppose I can be arsed to show up to this, my friends want to go even though they were there for the utter shite evening @ the Riv last time.

Hopefully they'll have their ventilation in order, and at least it's not in the middle of summer.

I think we might have to meet up at this.

I was dissapointed to hear it was at the Riv at first as well, but it actually won't be too bad. Practically speaking, this was definately going to be at one of the larger venues - the HOB or the Riv. The HOB has awful drink prices, inane policies to access the upper floors and opera/VIP boxes, and bad security. On top of that, the PvD show back in 2001 was so damn crowded it was impossible to move. I think the Riv will be great for a big production. It certainly won't be a Transit type night, but at this point, I'll take any PvD I can get.

<-- Yaaarg!

Hey true believers -

It's been a long time since I posted, but I'm back and with a vengeance.

Count me in for this show! Not only will I finally be 21 by then, but I live downtown now! WOO-HOO!!!

Hope to see you kids there. Don't worry about the heat, it'll be November. And don't forget the age old saying, Illinois only has two seasons: Winter and Road Construction.

does anyone know if there is a website for the riviera? i tried searching and couldn't find one...

thanks..

i saw PVD in shanghai .. oakey twice, and 00 flemming.. even met PVD there, so.. i'm needing my second does..

don't think it has a website

but it's located on the southwest corner of lawrence and broadway... a block away from the aragon and a step from the Green Mill

:0p

hrm

I was also at the last PvD show at the Riviera, and thank god it's going to be in November because I would not go again if it was in the summer. It was hard to enjoy anything in that intense heat.
