The "Global" dance scene

I read an interesting article the other day about the globalization of music. It was interesting because it talked about how different types of music evolved through the combination of different cultures (ie. reggae has roots in African, Carribean, and European culture).

Somewhat unrelated, but in the same vein, I got thinking about how the electronic dance music scene, is such a global phenomenon. Although it is still arguably an "underground" scene, djs like Hernan Cattaneao from South America, or Yoji Biohmenika (However it's spelled) from Japan, or countless djs from Europe or North America can pull crowds in clubs all over the world.

Think about all the references to "Global" whether it's "Global Underground" or Carl Cox and PVDs "Global" releases, Godskitchen "Global Gathering."

Any thoughts? I wonder if internet and web pages like tranceaddict have anything to do with it?

For sure. They definitely facilitate the sharing of all this music and information pertaining to it for people all over the world. I think everyone's gotten curious at some point in time (if they're not already constantly so) as to what's hot in a/some genre(s) right now in some other spot on the map.

You mean how Israel has a more of a thriving Psy trance scene? I think Eastern Europe has a thriving techno scene. The West Coast has a different house music scene too. I wonder what characterizes the Toronto scene?

I would definately agree with techno thriving in Europe.
Toronto on the other hand... I'm not sure of exactly where we fall, to be honest.

I know according to most of the people I know in K/W there's only three dance tracks that actually exist in the world - Sandstorm, Rapture and Nothing but You. Hopefully 103.5 will help the education out, but hey, TA's, help me convert the masses.

On another note, I think a large part of the music tastes and such are determined by what people hear. If people don't dance to a track, 'no one' will like it and ergo the genre will suffer. Case in point: Back in like... late May? early June? At one of our school events, we dropped Beyonce - Crazy in Love. Now that's a real kickin' track if you're into top40 type stuff - however, back then it hadn't had barely any radio coverage. So no one danced. *NOW* We get lots of requests for it. I think we just need trance to get more airtime and headtime with people.

I would definately consider eletronic music to be 'Global'. I want to visit England sometime and see what it's like when Trance or dance music is basically mainstream in a culture.

In Tiesto's DVD, "Another Day At The Office", he explains why he loves Cream@Amnesia in Ibiza so much. He says it's the one island in the world, that he knows of, where MANY cultures of people come together to party and enjoy his music. This is also the reason I want to go there one day

I was surprised , they get djs like Sasha, John Digweed, Deep Dish, Satoshi Tomiie, Mauro Picotto, Timo Maas, Paul Oakenfold, etc, etc.

Intersting most of this is tech/prog, not so much trance.

Hey loca, sucks that Lima has a better scene than Dublin . Not bad for a 3rd world country
