unix for life!!!

ok so when i started windows a couple days ago, my wallpaper loaded and nothing else...hmm strange i think and ctrl+alt+del to find a program running that usually doesnt, so i kill it and windowns continues to work fine, the only thing that doesnt work is 'msconfig'. so i let it chill for a couple days and finally i search the name of the file to find its a windows file, so either one of my windows files has been tampered with, or that file shouldnt be there, so i just delete it, cuz im screwed either way.

now windows starts up again but this time rundll32 doesnt run...ok so now i know im gonna have to format ... but wtf, cant windows not get screwed up for no reason ever? btw i try to repair xp, which basically reinstalls windows but keeps ur hard drive, so its going on and all of a sudden : error: rundll not found...no shit, whats the point of the repair if its not gonna install all the files?!?

anyways im too lazy to format now and the only thing that works on my comp is internet, no applications of any kind (which means no music/msn/email/games/c (cant even do homework) ...bah

Unix????

As one man said:

You know why everyone hates Microsoft???

Because Micosoft programmer for small apps getting huge money and Linus / Unix programmers for Huge apps getting almost to nothing.

Microsoft are building great software! MS Project and Visio are amazing, streets and trips is amazing. It's almost impossible to build high interactive software on unix platform.

And another thing: 95 % people in the world are using MS software. And I think there is a reason for that although Unix is 30 years old and windows is 10 years old. And Linux is free!!!!! So what.

Windows and the whole .net platform is simply amazing.

It's really difficult to screw up Windows XP. Usually, the problem sits between the keyboard and the chair.

Unless you have an ATI video card, in which case the problem is the shitty-ass video drivers. My bootleg Mobility Radeon 7500 drivers crash at least 3 times a day. And that's a huge improvement over the factory drivers, which would crash at least 10 times a day.

From a purely technical standpoint, I would have to second rabbitjoker on "BSD for life!" I played around with FreeBSD on my old computer, and I've gotta say that features like softupdates and the ports tree rock! Unfortunately, lack of hardware support for my laptop forces me to use Windows.

yo resnick dude, this seems to be a virus. You got a virus like alot of people I know right now.

go to www.bitdefender.com and check the online virus scanner.

good luck.

P.S. The easiest thing to do is blame Microsoft.

Posted by las3rjock on Sep-25-2003 16:42:

It's easy to blame Microsoft when it's their fault. It seems like a new Windows virus or security hole is terrorizing the Internet every few days. Contrast this to OpenBSD, in which case a security hole is discovered once every five years or so...

It truly is hard to screw up the XP... I never liked Microsoft, but this XP has been running on my comp for the last year or so, and it's been just beautiful so far!

And why use Linux when half of the applications that I (and 90% of the people in this world) use are only available for Windows?

ok now my email is getting crazy spammed, i am getting 2-3 emails every single day from "Microsoft Corporation Security Section" about a 'newest net security update' with an attachment file to install. im guessing its pure bs/virus,

also i get undelievered mail to some random address from a random user, this also comes with an attachment (my virus scanner picks this up as a virus)

this is in my u of t email account and has just recently started spamming me ( i dont use my uoft account to sign up for ANYTHING) so i dunno why all of a sudden this is happening

someone plz help!! this is like 6-7 emails a day im getting and its REALLY annoying, and this may be part of the reason i just had to format

You are correct in thinking that these emails are due to a new virus. The reason you're getting these is because someone who uses Microsoft Outlook has either sent email to or received email from your UofT account and has subsequently been infected by this virus.

1) Get Norton Antivirus
2) Update virus definitions
3) Reboot in safemode, scan / remove virus
4) Go to windows update and download all the security patches because this could probably have been avoided if you kept your system up-to-date.

ive had norton running the whole time , always updated

and my windows was updated too

Posted by las3rjock on Sep-26-2003 21:20:

Resnick probably is not infected with the virus. People who have sent Resnick email before or to whom Resnick has sent email almost certainly are infected.

I get virus emails only very rarely, because my mail server scans for spam and viruses.
