Behold, my arse. What PVD has to say about Ian Van Dahl and DJ Sammy in the Oct, 2003 MixMag

Paul Van Dyk- What he has to say about TRANCE in the new MixMag...
In the October 2003 MixMag, Paul Van Dyk says the following about trance:

"Trance had become a dirty word. Thanks to Ian Van Dahl, Lasgo, Flip 'N' Fill and DJ Sammy, a generation of kids has grown up thinking trance is the shittiest music since country and western.

Along with Armin Van Buurren, Tiesto, and Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk and tracks like 'Connected' have saved trance, steering it away from the bird-sings-over-80s-remake formula that was making trance a laughing stock, bringing it back to what it was always meant to be - fucking good dancefloor music that messes with your head.

He doesn't want to piss anyone off, so he doesn't like to talk about other DJs. With one exception: Ian Van Dahl gets a kicking for being completely 'cheesy'.

Cheesy records make proper trance look bad. Of course there are people who buy DJ Sammy records. They're not the same people that buy mine."

its weird....we have morons on this board(TRANCEADDICT)...who like dj sammy and ian van crap

Posted by brian on Sep-25-2003 16:06:

Perhaps the people responsible are not the artists, but those poorly misinformed individuals who classify van Dahl and DJ Sammy as trance rather than the more appropriate classification of pop. If these particular artists are the ones responsible, then so be it.

Nobody's a moron for liking a musical work. To each his own. I guess the cheese wars are slowly turning into very vocal cat fights. How sad.

Posted by tc-fan on Sep-25-2003 16:07:

thats funny how pvd described how horrible commercial trance is..heheh...classic...

Posted by Scottaculous on Sep-25-2003 16:14:

Heheh PvD bashes IvD yet he use to spin Conjure One - Sleep (IvD Mix)

Posted by NYCTrancefan on Sep-25-2003 16:17:

Paul is right on the mark with that commentary he doesn't attack those guys but lets people know that that is not trance. End of story. Once again DJ Sammy, Ian Van Dahl is not trance.

Posted by Karen Simon on Sep-25-2003 16:21:

Well...

I personally like what PVD had to say... basically pointing out that trance is not what DJ Sammy... and etc... play.

I love how he states that trance is good music that fucks with your head... ya know?

Then again... after hearing PVD's "Relections" album... he shouldn't speak too soon... some of his tracks are... ????... well... just odd.

Posted by torontotrance on Sep-25-2003 16:22:

reflections was too commercial...imo

it was a dud

he can do better....and he will...next album

he needs to release the avenue of stars tho.

Dam straight, I have been waiting for this ever since I heard tracks played from it at Homelands 2000 once EM went off air!

Posted by Shad0wmaster on Sep-25-2003 16:57:

i pity the poor misinformed losers who see DJ Shammy and Ian van Dull and crew on MTV or their favourite commercial garbage radio station and think "that's techno? what shit." too bad they'll probably never discover the joys of trance and REAL dance music. Way to go PvD, it's great to hear a big name expose all this dreck as the pop trash that it is.

"fucking good dancefloor music that messes with your head"...i'm putting that in my sig from now on

I honestly doubt that's true (especially for people who are new to 'techno.')

Exactly.

What was that DJ Sammy track that he had been playing too? I can't remember the name...

Posted by goldenarm79 on Sep-25-2003 17:13:

I believe pvd's been playing dj sammy - sunlight (pulser remix), and he did a remix with two other producers, the track was called "dj sammy - boys of summer (humate remix).

Posted by matty on Sep-25-2003 17:22:

Hmmm I like Dj Sammy and Ian van Dahl......lmao...j/k
I'd kill myself b4 i'd buy one of their records..

Posted by Special_K on Sep-25-2003 17:32:

AMEN. Its about time someone like Paul takes a stand against the fucking euro pop SHIT thats destroying the name "trance"

good on him now lets hope ministry of Cheese stops giving these ass packing producers MASSIVE releases.

fuck

Posted by digitalbreach on Sep-25-2003 17:56:

PVD has spoken
let it be written
let it be known

j/k...

Posted by contemplator on Sep-25-2003 18:04:

Should it matter to pvd what others like??

Posted by brian on Sep-25-2003 18:13:

One thing I hadn't thought of earlier is that Paul very avidly describes his music as simply being, "electronic dance music," whereas in this article he places his music and that of van Dahl's and DJ Sammy's pop music on the same playing field, as if they were in the same genre--which they are not. Something seems inherently wrong about this, especially in the end when he says that people who buy his records are not the same people who buy DJ Sammy's.

He does bring up a great point, though, in that trance is quite different than most of van Dahl's and Sammy's work. It's too bad that people consider these to be largely trance artists.

there is way too much of crap like this!!!!!

Posted by TranceSpeeder on Sep-25-2003 19:22:

IvD in my opinion kicks ass... Yes, I admit it... I have nothing to hide... I love castles in the sky and Reason... Also, DJ Sammy kicks ass... He has some very good tracks... Just my opinion...

Posted by Bayou Boy on Sep-25-2003 19:28:

i think everybody has some cheese stashed away in their crate...even the almighty van dyk!!!!

i think you also have to look at the remixes...like "boys of summer"..the martin eyer mix and humate or both tight...and hardly resemble the original. "sunlight"..minimalistic rmx...had a wicked groove!!..i wish the would have just kept that breakdown with the synth's out!!

the lange rmx of "will i" is alrigt

most on here prolly got into trance from listening to chesse, but later found out how chessy and shitty it is!!...so maybe chesse does serve some type of service?

that's because its a remix that turned a shitty song into gold... kinda like the Dumonde remix of Barthezz - On The Move (what was he thinking releasing that original track) ... hey if shitty music inspires a good producer to make some banging trance more power to them

Posted by Wretched on Sep-25-2003 19:53:

Connected is the most overrated track of the year.

I agree with everything else though, other than Ian van Dahl always being cheesy..

Posted by djSlain on Sep-25-2003 20:04:

as much as i agree with PVD about the cheesy artists who make a quick dollar at the expense of the genre, trance, i think he needs to look at himself. He hasn't been creative lately and from hearing samples of Reflections were disappointing. All the other big names are busy mixing, remixing and producing at top quality except for PVD (and fCorsten as well). The same kick with 4 strings isn't pushing trance in any direction
