Unhappy Digitally Imported is no longer free

check out the prices at http://www.digitallyimported.com/pro/signup/

still free for 96kbps and lower though...

what do you think about this? will more and more stations start to charge listeners? (what if ASOT was to be "pay per listen" )

i can understand them, but...

Posted by Mebot on Sep-28-2003 16:24:

it seems to me like it was eventually goin to happen.

Remember those free ISP? Juno and Netzero..free internet at first, but now they're chargin money.

I dunno, i dont like it, but it seems that this is the way the world works

I used to love listening to DI, however i have stopped in the past few months, mostly because, when i was listening, a lot of the music in the rotation was from a few years ago, and while it's good it does get repedative and boring.

I still did like listening to Musicology, Oslo Nights, and the occasional True to Trance.

Oh well, more power to them. There are some really really good stations out there still.

Posted by arj1o1 on Sep-28-2003 16:41:

yes but they have to pay for everytime they play a song (RIAA fackers), and its cheaper for old osngs

Posted by Allyn on Sep-28-2003 16:46:

Actually, i believe it is a flat rate per song, so even if the song is 5 years old, it's still the same as one released 2 weeks ago, per listener.

The only thing i can think of is the amount of transfer and bandwidth used by the 128kbps streams, and that is probably the reason for the cut.

wow that fuckin sucks

Posted by NYCTrancefan on Sep-28-2003 17:42:

look for more and more sites to start doing this, just the beginning.

Posted by Lost Inhibition on Sep-28-2003 17:43:

when do they start charging? i hope its not too soon

96K service is still free. they charge for the high bitrate.

Hah!
Paying to be able to listen to a radio... what bs.

Posted by EliPsE on Sep-28-2003 18:05:

that sux. i thought 128 would stay the same and 160+192 would be the paid service, guess not. 96k sounds ugly

Posted by diffusion on Sep-28-2003 18:05:

Paying for listening to radio is out of the question, in fact I think they are quite stupid to try and pull of this stunt.

They could save money by shaving off all the other bitrates. The only bitrate needed is 128kbps. Listening to music below 128kbps is intolerable...

BTW: Way Out West fucking rule

People with modems can't listen to 128, so they have to have bitrates to accomodate all connections.

I can't blame them for starting a pay service for as big as they have become, but I'll stick with TranceAirwaves fulltime now.

My fren... radio is not free... the advertising pays for them to be on the air, with internet radio, its not the air, but the bandwidth, sumone has to pay for it, its inevitable!

Someone has to pay for it, yes, but it shouldn't be us.

Do/would you pay to listen to "real" radio?

Posted by matt29 on Sep-28-2003 18:31:

I dont mind paying for a 160k stream, but I dont want to be paying for all the other sh*t that u get with it, email accounts, removal of banners from website etc. They should introduce a radio stream only package at a slightly cheaper price, people dont want all the other crap.

Posted by sndh on Sep-28-2003 18:43:

Shame / Disagreement

don't think much people will pay for di. They will search for alternatives like tranceairwaves. I understand DI.FM, but on the other hand, i don't get it why they don't have enough money to run the business right now. Ok, it costs much, but radiostations can make money out of adverts and stuff, even try to get cheap hosts for the streams...

Posted by reveal on Sep-28-2003 18:46:

i think that they have been expanding too fast lately, which might be one reason for their increased costs

Posted by ASOT100 on Sep-28-2003 18:51:

it's not like regular radio where if u have the equipment you can broadcast, online radio requires the continual cost of bandwidth

but dont they have sponsors to support them...and adds on there sites to make the money? they should also, hold events to make some money.

Posted by Nige| on Sep-28-2003 19:33:

hmmm Lets get a few things straight about Di.fm and bandwidth

90% of their bandwidth is FREE and donated to them so get the idea that your cashis going towards bandwidth out of ya heads, what they r paying for however is the same as what we at TAW pay for, the Royalty fees, however TAW will not be introducing a charge anytime soon

Posted by RobertRollie on Sep-28-2003 19:35:

They dont have to pay the RIAA dick unless theyre playing music owned by one of their members...and correct me if im wrong but i doubt any of the record labels which put out the kinds of music DI is playing

Posted by Nige| on Sep-28-2003 19:36:

fk knows, they play crap neway, only started getting the descent djs on when TAW popped up and scared the shit out of em, even now they have to enlist the help of t.nu lol
