Shame / Disagreement New Police Drug Tests

I'm sure a few of you will have heard about the new saliva test for drugs (marijuana and amphetamines) about to come into use by the police.

Does anyone know how it works? What does it actually test for?

I've heard that it's a litmus test. AFAIK, litmus is used to test for pH (year 9 chem). But that is all I know. Anyone else got more info?

Apparently you chew sum kinda crap and then that takes a sample of ur saliva..then then take that crap you chewed n then they test it with their machine.. but apparently it takes i think 5 minutes...

damn those coppers investing money on ways to catch the users... how bout they invest some real time and money and catch the big pushers and dealers!

and stop putting up speed cameras on the corner of every blardy street!

I heard you breathe into something and it indicates exactly what you have consumed with different colors running through the machine telling the policemen what drugs you done.

i think we're after a more technical explanation, as in the scientific theory of it. i for one, would love to know what excatly is being done here. anyone care to elaborate?

well im not so certain but it's like how you blow in that machine to tell you your alcohol level, but this machine tells the officer what kind of drugs you have taken by setting out different colours...

i'm still not sure, but that's what i heard.

errr thanks psyg mate but like i said, i would much appreciate a more scientific or technical explanation

search the age, sydney morning herald, and some other online news sites, they had a story about this a few weeks ago.

we did this in physics. the concentration of alcohol in your alveoli is directly related to your blood alcohol level. i had a look and alcohol can move across the repsiratory membrane cause it can evaporate in a solution. then you breathe and cop goes "sorry sir your over the limit" and smacks you with his rhythmn stick
so what am i leading to?
i dont think drugs evaporate in solutions like alcohol so how can you tell? mind you i did back the warriors so i could be wrong
lets stop the dealers from selling drugs to our kids in school because no1 wants to see little jimmy all smacked up

its funny cos every couple of years this story appears in newspapers nationwide. The truth of the situation is that this technology is hell expensive and is totally impractacle atm. My two cents.

Posted by Aesthetic on Sep-29-2003 09:37:

impracticle at the moment? come on dude, this is the drug age, every body is out there getting fucked up and the cops are on to it. this is the hottest time for them to strike, cost too much? thats bogus too cause they're already doing it in the u.k.

i already hated cops anyways, this doesnt really alter my mood for the better or worse

Posted by Solstice on Sep-29-2003 09:49:

as others have mentioned, the test involves chewing on some sort of strip that is then tested, the process supposedly takes a few minutes. Supposedly the test can check for Pot and amphetamines. Ive heard its being trialled in melbourne sometime soon.

Posted by Romp on Sep-29-2003 09:59:

Are they using it like breathlizers for drivers? Or just testing random people in the street or what

Posted by one.tjc on Sep-29-2003 10:14:

i would assume that it wouldnt be a 'blow in a tube' system for reasons Oli has stated before

however, the saliva would be more practical/inexpensive

you can purchase pill testing kits for about $20 a pop [pardon the pun] which can pretty accurately tell you what substance the pill is based on

since you've ingested X drug, you more than likely didnt stick in your ass [although its possible.. doesnt sound to comfortable.. ] and your saliva will contain traces of it.

still cant work out how they gonna test for snorted speed - unless it gets into your oesophegus [?] - and saliva through your nose..

anyway, thats my big idea for the day

\

[ps -> if you are on drugs, but are not carrying any.. do you still get charged with possesion? or is it just a fine for consumption..?]

Ill field this one kent

First of all, drugs enter saliva three ways, with the most common being the passive diffusion process. If the drug is intraveniouly injected, or ingested via the use of gelatin capsules, it would be be near impossible to detect using modern oral fluid testing tecnologies such as an oral speciman collection device(oscd's). Although oscd's are quiet capable of detecting drugs including benzodiazepines, opiates, conaine and methadone, it is quiet problamatic with the detection of marijuana, as marijuanas pKa is often inhibited in saliva, and can only be accuralty measured via unrinalysis

Now oscd's calcualte the concentration of a drug in saliva with this simple formula

....1 + 10 (pKa-pHs) * fs
S = ---------------------
....1 + 10 (pKa-fs) * fs

where S = concentration of drug in saliva
pKa = pKa of drug
pHs = Saliva pH
fs = Free (unbound) fraction of drug in saliva

Now although oscd's are quiet capable of detecting drugs, the concentrarion of a drug in saliva has a positive correlation with the amount of saliva present, so drugs such as caffine would decrease an oscd's accuracy by inhibiting the salivary glands

... maybe a bit tooo scientrific

hmm so if caffeine inhibits these tests, i guess Rolls Royce pills are gonna make a comeback

Geez, now the coppers are making you chew something that makes you see pretty colours, thanks guys

More accurately they tell you what is not present in the pill rather than what is. For more info check http://bluelight.nu

Time to take up plugging...

I'd hazard a guess that given that the substance enters into your blod stream very near your mouth that there would be a higher prevalance of it when you chew on the test material ...

I think the idea is to do this when you are pulled over for a random breath test or speeding or involved in an accident etc. In these cases they've got you for negligent driving at least.

thanks for clearing it up for me m8

About time the police are actually enforcing some law and order around the place. Its a good idea, lets hope that they make enough revenue from the speed cameras to make this equipment more available.
Hopefully, it will prevent ppl from coming to emergency and making my job a whole lot easier

Posted by Mikrop on Sep-29-2003 19:14:

So, based on wht GelatinPuff said, gel-caps are the way to go?

One thing I don't understand:

After going hard all night, the body is dehydrted somewhat and producing saliva seems to be a chore, almost impossible (even for a few days after). In such a state, wouldn't be impractical for a random drug test on the side of the road?

Also, I think the key to the whole scenario is "impaired". This is apparently judged at the discretion of the police officer doing the testing.

drugs are bad, mmmkay?

what if you get done for some shit like second hand pot smoke?

check this out

'KILLER' ECSTASY CLAIM BASED ON WRONG DRUG
Words: Terry Church
US research suggesting that one tablet of ecstasy could be enough to cause serious long-term damage to humans was actually based on the wrong drug, it has been revealed.

Government sponsored Professor George Ricuarte, America's leading ecstasy expert, accidentally injected monkeys with methamphetamine instead of MDMA which is a far more potent drug. Two out of the ten monkeys then died, and another two suffered severe brain damage. These findings were published as proof of the potential long-term damage of ecstasy in humans, when in fact no MDMA had actually been tested. His findings however, were labelled as completely false after the serious blunder was revealed.

This episode may have caused irreversible damage to the credibility of scientists researching drug-effects, and will certainly lead to more scepticism amongst recreational ecstasy users. More worrying however is the fact that such seriously flawed research could ever reach the public domain.

How messed up is the US government

First its the war on terrorism and now its the war on DANCE music screw them:

The day-long event was organised by local group ROAR (Ravers Organized Against the Rave Act) and the National Dance & Music Rights Alliance and featured performances form DJs such as D:Fuse and Jr. Vasquez, alongside guest speakers.

The highly controversial 'RAVE' (Reducing Americans Vulnerability to Ecstasy) Act was passed through the US political system earlier this year attached to an unrelated child abduction bill, despite the fact that there had been no debate or public hearing in Congress on the subject.

Now, the proposed Clean-up Act and Ecstacy Awareness Act will threaten the very existence of dance music in the US. If passed, promoters and property owners may be liable for their patrons drug use, even if they try everything they can to stop it. If found guilty, violators may face up to 20 years in jail or a criminal fine of up to $500,000.

The Drug Policy Alliance, one of many groups opposed to such anti-rave legislation, spoke of how such policies affect every property owner in America, not just dance music promoters: Because of its broad language, the proposed law could potentially subject people to twenty years in federal prison if guests smoked marijuana at their party or barbecue a spokesman for DPA said. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) actually perceives dance music events as nothing more than the sale, distribution and use of drugs, they commented.

The RAVE Act amends the Crack House Law, which had been used in the past to prosecute promoters based on such evidence as glowsticks, massage oil, and bottled water as proof of drug use.

More worrying however, is the fact that, dance music events, clubs, parties and anything that may potentially attract young people - will struggle to exist in the US if such laws are passed. All DJmag can say is if the DEA cant keep drugs out of their high-security prisons, how do they expect to stop young people from experimenting with drugs by stopping them dancing?

Posted by morphee on Sep-30-2003 04:10:

I remember hearing about one part of the RAVE act, the 'repetative music sub-act'. Any gathering of 6 or more people, where there is repetative music being played, is classed as a rave, and will be shut down if there is not legalities like a license and the promoter has informed the local police that there will be a rave on.....

fucking ridiculous
