setting up drum grooves?!?

Alright i've finally (after tinkering with reason for awhile now, on and off...) got a very basic grasp of how the program works and i've been playing around for the past couple of days setting up drum grooves. Problem is, mine sound... wrong, is the best way I can put it

I guess I really don't know the basic standard fare drumkit setup. I know most tracks have a bass (durr) and a clap every other beat but after that its all.. greek to me. I did a quick search for "drum grooves" in production/djing/etc. forums but it turned up nothing. Any basic tips as to what kind of instrumentation you want for a drumgroove?

Sorry if my terminology is all wacked, hope somebody can understand what i'm asking.

try this

KICK : X---X---X---X---
CLAP : ----X-------X---
HIHAT: --x---x---x---x-

very standard

and you can do

KICK:X---X---X---X---
CLAP:----X--X----X---
HIHAT:--x---x---x---x-
HIHAT2:-x---x-x-x---x-x

on hihat2 you set the volume down to max 75% of the other hihats volume...

when you get this started just add some more shit and youll be able to work it out from there...

just one thing that is a must when doing percussion, ALWAYS SHUFFLE IT! and pref. humanizing and all that but that comes later

Not necessarily. It can mess the groove totally.

Anyways, like mentioned above always start with the basic pattern.
Then keep adding stuff to it - for example silent d'n'b loops or hip hop loops on double speed give a nice touch to a tune (just make them silent enough so they don't mess the beat too much, also make sure you take the bass away from them).
Also, panning closed hihats makes them stand out more... and variation is always good too...

Plus I always use an On-Kick-Hat
