Canadian Society, Political Correctness etc..
Holy shit! What is becoming of Canadian society ??
First some background info.
As some of you know I study at Comp. Science at University of Waterloo. Anyways, I'm taking a course right now(CS 452 - Real Time Programming). This term it's only males who are taking the course(20 people). Normally there are 1-2 girls. Essentially the goal is to develop a real time operating system within 3 months period(worth 70% of final mark). As you can imagine this takes shit load of time, so we end up spending in the lab 6-14 hours/day. We can't really work at home on that, so we only work in the lab. Only people in our class are allowed in that lab.
During the years it became a tradition to decorate the lab so that at least it doesn't look very dull. This term one of my classmates put up the following poster:

Seeing as there are no girls in class, we thought it would be ok.
Anyways, a week passes by and some bitch(girl, who isn't even in our class) complains about it, saying it's somehow offensive. So there has been a meeting between the director of Math Faculty, director of Undergraduate Studies at Waterloo, few other high-profile UW workers and a few professors. They decided to take the poster down, saying it somehow "poisons the environment" and makes it unbearable to work in for some people.
Now there are big discussions on our local waterloo newsgroups about it..
What the hell is becoming of Canadian society???? We can't put up an innocent poster anymore? That was the first time in my six years here that I realized how fucked up Canada really is in some ways.
well, lets see here. 2 half naked chicks kissing each other in a bed. Its very cool indeed, maybe for the 20 people in your group. But is it a good reason to put that in a public space called univeristy? NO.

What's the caption at the bottom of the pic say?
I can only see "Kiss"...
If this was hung up at your own private business I'd say you have an arguement, but you are in a public environment paid by taxpayers.
That just translates to, everone has the right to bitch and win because that's the way our society is...bending over for ever minority that doesn't like the way things are....
That's just the way it goes man...
Maybe if it was a guy/girl pic it'd be ok? lol.... ![]()

I have this exact poster in my dorm. its about 2'x3.5'. I've received numerous compliments and my housemates (girls included) are fine with it. We always joke that it's "positive space" (a campaign on the UofT campus to reduce homophobia). My senior don is all cool with it and says even if it was in the common room, he wouldn't care. My junior don, a lesbian
, loves it. I see no problem with it and nobody else should either. The fact that the girl is offended by it does not make it wrong.

its all bs, why cant ppl see that? there is no such thing as a right or wrong thing, everything you do can offend some people and not offend others.
I just love how in modern society you are responsible for taking care of someone else's emotional well being.
If we spent more time being worried about ourselves, and not how what other people do affect us, we'd be better off as a whole in my opinion.
How often do you see something when out for the night partying that disgusts you, or offends you? Plenty, but you accept it for what it is, and make a mental note to avoid it/ignore it.
I guess this girl must run @ top speed, eyes closed, when walking down church street, or perhaps she is writing City Council that she's offended by public affection and wants it banned.
that is %^&*( ridiculous
they can legalize gay marriages, they can be publicly affectionate but that, that is unacceptable
I don't see the poster being in any way repugnant, distasteful or offensive

heh brunette's post just gave me an idea. You can complain to the school that those actions are homophobic! hahahahaha you will win hands down.
To elaborate on what brunette said...
Malek, and the rest of you, I think the point Durafei has raised is that public or not public, what the hell is the problem with it? How is this picture offensive!?
Honestly, some bitches take this shit too far, they insist that the world needs to be totally asexual or something. I'm sure these are the same types of people that can't take a compliment from any guy and go to watch the Vagina Monologues later on. It's not even about political correctness, it's just totally asinine.
I can practically guarantee you that if a group of women posted up the opposite sort of picture, it would stay. People feel the need to constantly nag and bitch about how men are still "opressing" and "degrading" women with such pictures
as if we've got something to apologize for.

If I was Waterloo administration I would have asked you to take down that poster as well. They don't care about politically correctness, they just don't want any trouble. That bitch who complained is the one with the problem. I say you find out this girl's phone number and post an ad in the Now magazine 'escorts' section with the number. Crude but payback's a bitch.
btw, I completely agree with DigiNut on the opposite picture scenario.

| Originally posted by 'mju:zik So you think a pic like that creates a good image to visiting faculty? What about other people who visit that lab? You gotta reemember that this is a school! Those chicks are nasty too. They're not pinup girls, they're sluts and that's obvious. If girls put up the same pic it would be taken down too, how does the person putting up the pic have anything to do with it? |
My question would be, where is this person when Gay Pride Day rolls around and what does she do then? lol... ![]()

I find that to be normal. I think you shouldn't be allowed to put such posters in the first place (or any non comp. related posters, say for a band or such). I mean this is a uni lab not your bedroom.
personally, I wouldn't mind them, but I understand why they wouldn't be allowed
also

| Originally posted by bass drive I wont complain, because I don't like bitching. one thing for sure, I wont be comfortable with seeing a poster with two men kissing infront of me while I am trying to get my wprk done |
ya I got you
what I was trying to say is; it shouldn't be allowed to be put up in the first place, not take it off b/c someone got offended.
I have no problem with it, but I understand the person in charge wont allow it for the uni. image
You guys are all missing the point of this post though.
WHY is this obscene, inappropriate, why shouldn't it be allowed, etc.?
Can someone honestly state what's wrong with it?
It's just that people in this society have been trained to believe that "pornographic" images are somehow "wrong." Try meeting some European girls, they'll have very different opinions of all this...
you just answered to it yourself
