Spicelab (aka Oliver Lieb)

I just had the chance to hear some very early Lieb work under his Spicelab alias. I'd heard the name before and I was told they were kinda weird tracks. Well, I just listened to these releases from 1992-93:

Spicelab - The Spicelab EP (Harthouse 007)

A1 Spicecowboy (6:33)
A2 Placebo (6:35)
B1 Spiceinvaders (6:56)
B2 Weirdo (6:28)

Spicelab - Quicksand EP (Harthouse 010)

A1 Amorph (5:14)
B1 56387 (6:39)
B2 Quicksand (7:40)

Spicelab - The Spirit Of Fear (Harthouse 018)

A1 The Spirit Of Fear (9:10)
A2 S.Y.N.C (7:50)
B1 Ant Attack (7:22)
B2 Hyperspice (9:33)

Has anyone else heard this stuff? Some of it is really cool and some is just plain odd. I never knew what his early work sounded like so it was interesting to hear, but it certainly is diverse. I know there were a lot more Spicelab productions later including full albums, but I haven't listened to those. Anyway of the above I like these best:

Hyperspice
Quicksand
Spiceinvaders
The Spirit Of Fear
Weirdo

Wahey, a Spicelab thread

Anyways, I adore Oliver Lieb's works, and Spicelab is one of his more visionary projects, where he pretty much starts off on one sound or synth and just transforms the thoughts that come into his head into music. This is also the reason why most of the Spicelab tracks are so damn long. "Falling" off Another Day On Our Planet (which I just ordered on vinyl ) is like an 18 minute long journey through ambient and trancy soundscapes, where as tracks like Hyperspice are old school trance with a relatively high BPM rate. I personally love the sounds Oliver and the rest of the Harthouse crew stood for back then (check my custom text), so everyone should deffo check out the Spicelab stuff to hear how trance sounded (and should sound IMO) back then.

i have Oliver's Spicelab album... definitely interesting, but yes the songs are really long...

Sand Leaper, that set looks pretty awesome indeed! And yes, Mirage - Airborn does indeed rock. I love the bass in the original, it really makes the track for me. At the moment I'm trying to track down some more Spicelab stuff, in particular those long soundscapey ones you mentioned. I'm curious to see what they sound like. And in regard to Harthouse, I do like a lot of their releases but generally I prefer the trancier ones like Airborn, Spectrum, etc.

Oh those where the days!

Harthouse, Eye Q, MFS, Frankfurt Beat, Important, Choci's Chewns, Noom, early Bonzai, Overdrive, Hyper Hype, etc.

Great labels, great artists, great music and a great era in trance!

Warning! blatant self-promotion:
You do know most of the tracks mentioned here in this thread is on rotation in Di Radio's Classic Techno/Trance channel right?

sorry for bumping this up again, but damn what a great track Spicelab - Two is.
Wicked tech-trancer in the nice Oliver Lieb style.
rarely talked about as well.

This thread should be bumped just because of the educational value

The Spicelab magic went away after '96 or so. All the Spicelab remixes are decent, but his Thunderdome remix is nothing short of visionary.

Posted by RebeL9 on Dec-29-2005 18:25:

interesting to see how he evolved the Spicelab sound. and since its like 5 years since the last Spicelab release it would be interesting to see if there are more from Lieb under this guise. also what style it would be.

I wish I could find this stuff in the UK. Spicelab is much better than Lieb's more recent stuff, which is a bit "meh", really.

Spicelab Rules

Oliver Lieb did a great and very inspiring job with the Spicelab name.

For me, my favorite Spicelab track (and one of my favorite EDM tracks of all time), is from his 2000EP called "TWO". I bought the vinyl a while back and I have to say that this song never gets old at all.

All 3 cds are available relatively cheaply on Amazon. I bought them from there myself a while ago, very good deal indeed.

It's crap.

I still think Lieb's best work was L.S.G - Into the deep (album). I've never since come across anything like it and I doubt I ever will.

He's a top bloke too, was lucky enough to have a chat with him at Union at The space in Leeds a few years back.

A little while back I sent a text message to this Service that runs over in the uk. It's called any questions answered AQA. (Google search it for the website)

And one night me and some mates were wasting 1 a time texting this thing asking it all sorta dumb questions. So I asked it what is the best trance tune ever?

It replied some time later with:

"Spicelab - A Day On Our Planet, or Sofasurfers - Monoscolopolis. But AQA dosn't get out too much."

I researched both tunes including asking on here, and apparently they are very good. although quite removed from todays trance sound no doubt, I've been itching to hear some of these old tunes.

ANYONE UP FOR A HARTHOUSE MIX?
