Let's talk Technical Skills for Dj's
I'm FURIOUS to see that ppl on this board are SOOOO into trance ( and probably that they've never really heard a GREAT technical dj ) that they think that Pvd or armin or who cares what trance dj, are technically better than any other dj's !!!
Guys
Let's be serious
If Dj mag top 100 dj list would be a Technical skills competition..
DAVE CLARKE
BEN SIMS
CARL COX
And
PREACH
Would place in the top 4 ... Exactly the way i just listed them !
And Btw ...
COME ON
I've heard EVERY biG trance Dj's ( Armin, Ferry, marco V, Van Dyk to name a few ) i've yet to see oakie
BUT COME ON !!!!
Half of them can't even put two beats together ... and i'm not joking .. i'Ve never heard as many Trainwreck in a dj set then when i hear a Trance Dj
Believe me
I'm a house maniac ... i'm not really into techno at all
But NO DJ'S are better ( technically ) than Techno dj's .. let's be honest !!!
KrinKer
Im glad somebody pull this thread out
krinker im with you on that one
and i dont want you to think i hate trance I still love to ear some trance once in a while but live its something else...
Another useless thread from someone that doesn't know what he is talking about...
NO krinker, if we are talking best technical dj, I would say that cox, sims and clarke are up there but why forget one name "danny tenaglia". I find he is probably the best technical dj out there because his mixing is so spot on and he is fundamentally sound. If you were going to add another name, I'd add john digweed because he is the same technical wise as tenaglia. You may not like the music they play but digweed and tenaglia are in the top 5 of technical wise. What about Andy C, tremendously technical dj and very good at that. Music Magazines claim the most technically sound dj out there was Tony De Vit (RIP 1998) but I've only heard a few sets and I cannot make an opinion on that.

Nahhh, Danny Tenagl8ia is far to be in the top 10 for technical!
Same for Carl Cox, he's far to be in the top 10.
Here is my small list and names are nor in order:
Marco Carola
Ben Sims
Ben Sims
Dave Clarke
Mark Farina
Derrick carter (when he's really into it)
Terry Francis
Roger Sanchez (when he's really into it)
Space DJZ
i would say Ben Sims
listen to derrick carters sets, he jsut doesnt care how he trhows in and it sounds good. hes rough and like does the craziest effects jjust wit 2 records, so many vocals and backspins on the same track
its crazy
Ill say it again: what the hell r u talking about? Open your eyes dude and look at things from different directions, think a bit and you will get the point,.., musical reaserch, whatever....
Then again biggy, what technical means to me and technical means to you may be very different.
Derrick Carter is crazy tho, I have never heard of a deejay getting drunk, dancing on the dancefloor while records are being played and sending the crowd into cloud nine, all in the same night.
Are you talking about Danny T Torontotrance?
When you put a 15 minutes long track, you can go on the dancefloor to dance or go to the toilet, there is no difference. There is nothing about dj skills on the decks or with the mixer with this.
A guy like Dave Clarke is using every single effect out of the DJM-600 and it sounds good, I mean very good, even crazy.
Ben Sims is fast and aggressive, changing records so fast and always playing with 3 tracks at the same time. It's tribal crazy techno.
Mark Farina is so tight, he's doing super long mixes, just perfect.
Derrick Carter, he's fast. Changing trak hip-hop style with a lot of cuts (good cuts) adding the best acapellas etc...
WOW !!
I've created a topic that gets people to Post !!
WOW !!
How great am i !!
No seriously
The thing that's constent ... is that .. NO TRANCE DJ'S have good skills !! ( well .. not as good as carter, farina, sims, clarke .. and everybody forgot ... PREACH ... the guy is awesome .. skills like no other dj's in canada ( maybe more ) )
KrinKer
But danny tenaglia's mixing skils are amazing. You never see him trainwreck, you never really see him mess up. Yes he might play 15 min records but his mixing is quality and that is what I thought a technical deejay was all about.
Or are you trying to tell me that someone who mixes records in fast and does it well rates higher in the rating of technical deejays. I thought this was technical, not about the type of music they played because if you go by mixing records in quickly and doing seemlessly then you would have to add the turntablists like mixmaster mike, q-bert and kid koala.
Well, when we talk about great technical skills, it come closer to the talent of turntablist. Because if we are only talking about mixing 2 records, 2 mnay dj's can do it perfectly, it has to be more difficult than that.
What I mean is if you try to mix like Ben Sims, you will have to practice 1000 times more than to mix like Danny T.
So imagine with Qbert? But it's no more dance music so it's not comparable.
my 2 cents.

Do you think it's essential for a DJ to produce? I think now it is essential for DJs to try and make music, or at least be more involved than just playing records, maybe years ago it was ok to just spin but now everybody can mix and you could probably teach a monkey to DJ, so it's hard to break through unless you have something else to offer like your own style or sound, and it's far easier to stand out if you've made records or done remixes that display what you're about...it's like an advert for what you do as a DJ. |
No one tries to think about that most of those djs traveling 24/7, playing gigs all over the place on different setups. Not everybody can quickly adapt themselfs to new setups to be able to give the crowd the best of them. But more often, people don't think that some djs get tierd from previous gigs and might feel not that good, or just not in the mood... and all those things can be a reasonable factor in making little mistakes during transitions... But it doesn't mean they suck, infact PVD plays very well. And playing well doesnt mean that you have to pull ur fader and effects every 2 seconds. Infact, the less you notice the tansition, the more complicated it gets. Being able to play neat requires skills and precision.
you just can't compare a trance dj to a techno dj. You can't do shit with a trance record but with a techno or house record you really have a lot more versatility. Try to spin 3 trance tracks at the same time
Thats why i got more interested, as a dj, into techno, house, everything that is not trance

with danny tenaglia being able to spin all kinds of music and being able to carry out his sets for extremely long he must have extreme talent.. then again it depends what you define as a technical genius?.. being on cue.. harmonically matched? scratching skills? improvisations?
alot of hip hop djs can scratch like crazy (as well as other djs) but cant beat match at all
what about james zabiela he can scratch for the longest amount of time and make it sound good with the music he spins.. hard techno djs are very good at layering tracks.. and quick mixing
so all in all it depends on what defines technically best
personally all djs have their good days and bad days.. im sure tenaglia train wrecks sometimes.. all djs do... layering 3 tracks will also turn out bad sometimes..
its a tough desision.. i dont know who to vote for.. but tenaglia would definately be up there

From what I've seen:
Sander K and Deep Dish - best house DJs
PVD - best trance Dj
Marco Corola - best techo DJ
And I agree with Dj Dan that mixing is not how many effects u're able to pull off, but how smooth the transition is. Another thing is that all those effects u can pull off on house music - there's no way u can do that in trance, trance is not made so that u can play on 3 turntables or put in different acapellas and sounds all the time, b/c it just gets messy!
