Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Symptoms Include:

regularly occurring symptoms of depression (excessive eating and sleeping, weight gain) during the fall or winter months.
full remission from depression occur in the spring and summer months.
symptoms have occurred in the past two years, with no nonseasonal depression episodes. seasonal episodes substantially outnumber nonseasonal depression episodes. a craving for sugary and/or starchy foods.

Possible Cause of this Disorder
Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, has been linked to SAD. This hormone, which may cause symptoms of depression, is produced at increased levels in the dark. Therefore, when the days are shorter and darker the production of this hormone increases.

Treatments
Phototherapy or bright light therapy has been shown to suppress the brains secretion of melatonin. Although, there have been no research findings to definitely link this therapy with an antidepressant effect, many people respond to this treatment. The device most often used today is a bank of white fluorescent lights on a metal reflector and shield with a plastic screen. For mild symptoms, spending time outdoors during the day or arranging homes and workplaces to receive more sunlight may be helpful. One study found that an hours walk in winter sunlight was as effective as two and a half hours under bright artificial light.

If phototherapy doesnt work, an antidepressant drug may prove effective in reducing or eliminating SAD symptoms, but there may be unwanted side effects to consider. Discuss your symptoms thoroughly with your family doctor and/or mental health professional.

I'm glad I don't suffer from this, but I know a few of my friends do and it is really hard on them.

Don't have one.

Posted by mezzir on Oct-13-2003 22:14:

yeah i've never actually been diagnosed and probably don't really have it, but i definately get depressed a lot more often in the winter months
and also, starting sometime around october (already started this year) i always get like a cold type thing, and it doesn't completely go away till like april
i never get really sick but i constantly have a stuffy nose or sneeze a lot or headaches
really sucks, anyone else have anything similar?

I know someone who uses this light treatment every morning in the fall-winter months. seems to work.

The solution?

I personally love winter. It's my favourite season.

the secret to beating SAD is to go snowboarding! and making snow forts and braining your friends with snowballs.

unless you don't live near snow at all... then i would suggest you to do what dj nuclear suggests.

it must suck to get depression only certain seasons of the year.

I kinda like all the seasons and hate them for their own characteristics.

Posted by whiskers on Oct-14-2003 01:46:

it's funny, i was just thinking that there were around 4 months of depressing weather ahead of us...

it all depends whom you get to spend them with. I cannot wait to spend winter with my GF! Hot cocoa, warm blanket and cold clear skies time

I love the different varietys of the weather here in Canada, when I lived in England it was rain rain and more rain, with abit of sun every now and then, but here I get the best of both worlds, I get nice hot summers, to go out and do stuff, then the snowy winters, for christmas and snowboarding and a bunch of other stuff, I have never got depressed cos of the weather, and I never will, I know allot of people that just want it to be sunny and 20C outside all the time, but if it was like that I wouldn't like it, I'd get bored, and really wouldn't like it round christmas, I really think that you have to find the best parts about the seasons and just enjoy yourself, and just so you know I am single, so there is no cuddling by the fire with a girlfriend for me, but I don't care there is still plenty to do, even though that would be nice.

I'm sorry, but half the "disorders" they come up with are bullshit. And this is one of them.

Do they really have to slap a name on everything these days?

i definetely agree. It is a way for the pharmaceutical (spelling?) industry to sell more drugs. If you have a drug that doesn't sell why don't you create a market for it. I mean you see all these ad's on TV about "Social Anxiety Disorder", which is basically playing on people's fear. People might think that they are not outgoing enough and then buy the product that is supposed to help them be more likeable..

Posted by mezzir on Oct-14-2003 03:33:

well yeah, i totally agree
i took a psychology class last year and did a paper on ADD and i went over the symptoms with people who knew me well and i'm pretty sure that i have it, but don't wanna be a puss and take pills for it
i can get by without spending hard earned money on stuff i don't really need
fuck marajuana being a gateway drug, prescription drugs are far worse
and wtf is with drug ads on tv that dont' tell you what the drug fuckin does?
whats the point!!!
